Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

We have a math tutor who has used Saxon for the past 10 years and according to her, this curriculum is more in depth and faster paced than what my child would learn in the public school setting. I also like that Saxon incorporates Geometry with the Algebra and it isn't a separate class like in public school.

I am trying to figure out whether to start my daughter in 8/7 or Algebra 1. (I already have the 8/7 materials.) Saxon is a good approach for her because she forgets math quickly (it is not her area of interest) and can benefit from thoughtful repetition.

Heard great thing about Saxon Math. Tried a video-only course before, and while my student had straight A's, she didn't feel she was really learning the material for the long-term. Decided to try Saxon, because so many homeschool family friends use this curriculum and really love it.

The solution manual (with every problem worked out) should be a big help to me, if my son has questions about something. Right now I've got a newborn and I need all the help I can get :)

Seems like a good fit for my 8th grader. i like that it includes geometry
Lauren G on Jun 15, 2021
The public school did not give enough of an Algebra curriculum this year for my son (roughly 40% of what should have been taught). We are going to use this to make sure he is ready for Geometry next school year.

Larrissa G on May 15, 2021
I like Saxon because it is a straightforward curriculum that most children can follow on their own. There are times you will need to assist your child but the directions are laid out and very easy to understand for most children. I also like the fact that Saxon uses a combination of rote, spiral, and conceptual concepts in their books to move the child along in their learning experience.
Latonya R on Apr 26, 2021
I use Saxon Math to supplement my kids' math and I think Saxon is wonderful.

We have used the Saxon curriculum at one of my child's charter schools and we really like how simple and incremental it is. It's also easy to reference the chapter with the needed information if your child is struggling with a concept as the lesson numbers are underneath each problem. There's also plenty of review which helps my children master the concepts.
Lynnellen N on Jan 4, 2021
If your child uses Saxon math the whole way through it is a guaranteed career in my opinion.
Jen G on Dec 18, 2020
My son is finishing Saxon 8/7 and he has a really solid grasp of the concepts, so I'm skipping Saxon Algebra 1/2 and going straight to Algebra 1. We have a year and a half to cover the material, so I think he will be okay.
Kelley C on Dec 17, 2020
Researching which edition to choose, I felt like edition 3 stayed true to the teaching methods and goals of John Saxon. I do NOT recommend edition 4. It is not John Saxon's work.
Robyn M on Dec 1, 2020
I have used Saxon math from the 1st grade and will continue the rest of the way through. I love the way the books are laid out and how my children can work independently with little to no help. Of course they have help if needed but most of the time require very little because of how well the concepts are explained. LOVE SAXON MATH!
Alicia H on Nov 20, 2020
My child is taking a popular on-line Algebra 1 program and is just.not.getting it. He wants a book, not an online program. I chose Saxon because of its reputation for ease of teaching, helping kids become independent and because of it's review and repetition, which my child clearly needs, for the first time ever, since he has moved to Algebra.
Judy S on Nov 18, 2020
I wanted a math program to replace Khan. My son felt the videos did not help explain how to do the problem. We have done Saxon in the past and it worked out well for him. Plus, great reviews, and a teacher manual included!
tanya n on Nov 12, 2020
I have read good reviews about this curriculum. The curriculum my daughter is currently using is not working well for her, so we are going to try Saxon.
Stephanie B on Nov 11, 2020

Love the way Saxon continually reviews all the things learned in each lesson. For my kids that struggle in math, this program seems to work. While it is a bit dry at times, they do learn the concepts.

So far, this is the best Math curriculum out there. We have tried several but Saxon Math has proved to make my kids strong in Math than other curriculum.
Cooper S on Jun 22, 2020
Homeschooling veteran friends of mine recommended Saxon to homeschool for Math next year. My son just completed Pre-Algebra/Algebra Readiness last year as an accidental repeat when we moved (eye roll), so now we are playing catch up and going to try to get through Algebra 1 & 2 by the end of next summer. I did Saxon Math growing up, so I'm hoping it looks familia and is as easy as I remember it.

My high school aged child struggles with Math. I believe this curriculum will help her master and review skills as she works through the lessons. There are also three different formats of support materials available to reference. My child chose the Dive download to accompany these materials. Saxon Math was recommended to me by many veteran homeschoolers.

is the teacher's manual included in this set?
Rebecca on Dec 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I bought this over a year ago and a solution manual was included in my order, which shows the work(process). The regular answer key does not include the work or process, (just answers only) so it is hard to figure out how to come up with the answers unless you know the subject very well. I find the solution manual helpful to figure out how to come to the answer. Thus, it helps us to help our child when he does not get the correct answer. In other words, there was no booklet called “teacher’s manual” in this set, but I assume you mean the solution manual?

Is the Teacher's Manual different from the Solutions Manual? Would I want both?
User on Aug 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My answer: yes, you will want both books.
Saxon provides two options for answers: Answer Key (which contains the test answers (with solutions) and homework answers (no solutions) and Solutions Manual (which contains homework answers (with solutions) but no test information). If you want to be able to grade the tests, then you need the Answer Key. My 3rd edition book is called 'Homeschool Packet'; I couldn't find any other title for it.) In addition, if you want step-by-step solutions for the homework (practice sets and problem sets) you will need the Solutions Manual also.
Why doesn't the description tell you what's included???? Am I buying the student text, test booklet/answers and the Solutions manual?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. You are getting all that you need. I remember that the picture doesn't show it, but you get all three.
Is the test packet included with this kit? It is not in the picture, but I'm assuming it is included since a lookup of the ISBN shows it included on other websites.
A shopper on Mar 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This package does come complete with answers, test packet, all you need to have a successful math year. Saxon is the best in my opinion.

Great math book
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is homeschooling. It explains the problems and the teacher book helps show how to break down the problem to teach how to solve the equations.

Thorough and incremental way to teach/learn algebra I
This is my first time homeschooling (due to distance learning during pandemic being a mess). I like the Saxon method. It can be a little burdensome with all the repetition. But, I like the fact that the repetition allows for your kid to show if they REALLY understand a concept, and if not, there are opportunities to catch it and correct it over multiple lessons.

I HIGHLY recommend getting the COMPASS CD/Download to go with this. I wouldn't want to teach Alg. I with the books only. The Compass lessons bring it to life and provide a different medium beyond textbook pages.

We purchased this course for son to go with Dr Reed’s online course. It is very easy to follow and our son has learned quite a bit. He has not felt overwhelmed at all. Highly recommend!!

Saxon is second to none.

Systematic, appropriately repetitive, understandable, reasonable progression, confidence building DIY. With Saxon, Math doesn’t have to be stressful and I say that as a man with an accounting degree and an MBA in finance.

Algebra 1
I don’t think we needed the solution manual after all. We could have saved lots of money if we did not buy the one with solution manual.
Although I spent lots of time reading other reviews before ordering this, it was disappointing. Saxon 8/7 advanced rather fast at the end, and I expected Algebra 1 would be similar in the last 1/8 of saxon 8/7 in terms of pacing. I am glad we didn’t order Algebra 1/2 as we consider it first seriously. Algebra 1 takes off really slowly with lots of reviews of 8/7. Our 6th grade is doing just fine with Algebra 1 after finishing 8/7. Also, I regret that we didn’t order the newest version because the review said that the new version moves fast without much explanations. Looking at Algebra 1, how it is pacing, we should have bought the newest version considering we really do not need too much in depth explanations for this book anyway as it is basically the same theory from 8/7. I wish there was a way to look into the first a few lessons without buying the textbook and wish there were more description of the deference between 8/7, algebra 1/2 and 1. Hope this review will help others in similar situations. Though lots of review made it sound like Algebra 1 is really hard, it is not hard at all.... not much different from prealgebra. I am confident to say that if your student is doing well- average 85% on 8/7 ( mixed practice), regardless of age (some review recommended to go for Algebra 1/2 if students are too young), skip Algebra 1/2 and go for Algebra 1. I would have gone for the newest version, not the old version.

Much more manageable
My son is really enjoying learning Algebra with Saxon. The best part is the reference number that tells you where a problem was taught.
