Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Category Description for Saxon Algebra 1 3rd Ed (with Geometry):

Covers signed numbers, exponents, solving equations, two equations with unknowns, graphing equations, scientific notation, ratio, percent, variation, unit conversions, geometry, perimeter, area, volume, English to metric conversion, surface area. 3rd edition.

I'm so impressed with the Saxon approach, my 6th grader is learning more now than with any previous math, we cruised through the 6/7 & 7/8 books and now moving to Algebra!
User on Sep 26, 2019
The description seems to indicate that this curriculum will fall into line fairly well with the "Integrated Math I" that they use at our local public school.

We are starting homeschooling again after a few years break. Everyone has said Saxon math is the best way to go for high school level math. It's the most comprehensive well rounded curriculum in most people's opinion that prepares the student for the next level of math and ultimately college.
Robin W on Mar 6, 2019
I chose Saxon because it's thorough. I know that my students will be prepared for college if they use Saxon throughout their school age years.
Kim B on Jan 13, 2019
We have tried other programs that didn't work well for us, and we've heard good things about Saxon. Hope it works out well for my child!

We have always used Saxon math for our now 7th grader. After a brief stint away from homeschooling, we are now back and ordering Saxon per our son's request because he says it taught him math better than anything else he was given.

Saxon math is the best college prep math we've used. After completing the Saxon Algebra 2 curriculum a student can test out of 3 math exams via CLEP or DSST tests (CLEP College Mathematics, CLEP College Algebra and DSST Math for Liberal Arts).

I like Saxon Math, the experience my children have had with it, and it becomes highly recommended by other teachers I know and respect. My son needs a challenge in Mathematics. This permits him to work independently as much as possible and a way to check his work as he progresses.
Jeanette B on Oct 8, 2017
My student finished Saxon math 8/7. Algebra 1/2 is almost a complete repeat of the year. So I ordered Algebra 1, 3rd edition (which prepares the student for more options than 4th edition).

Is the Teacher's Manual different from the Solutions Manual? Would I want both?
User on Aug 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My answer: yes, you will want both books.
Saxon provides two options for answers: Answer Key (which contains the test answers (with solutions) and homework answers (no solutions) and Solutions Manual (which contains homework answers (with solutions) but no test information). If you want to be able to grade the tests, then you need the Answer Key. My 3rd edition book is called 'Homeschool Packet'; I couldn't find any other title for it.) In addition, if you want step-by-step solutions for the homework (practice sets and problem sets) you will need the Solutions Manual also.
Why doesn't the description tell you what's included???? Am I buying the student text, test booklet/answers and the Solutions manual?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. You are getting all that you need. I remember that the picture doesn't show it, but you get all three.
Is the test packet included with this kit? It is not in the picture, but I'm assuming it is included since a lookup of the ISBN shows it included on other websites.
A shopper on Mar 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This package does come complete with answers, test packet, all you need to have a successful math year. Saxon is the best in my opinion.

Algebra 1
I don’t think we needed the solution manual after all. We could have saved lots of money if we did not buy the one with solution manual.
Although I spent lots of time reading other reviews before ordering this, it was disappointing. Saxon 8/7 advanced rather fast at the end, and I expected Algebra 1 would be similar in the last 1/8 of saxon 8/7 in terms of pacing. I am glad we didn’t order Algebra 1/2 as we consider it first seriously. Algebra 1 takes off really slowly with lots of reviews of 8/7. Our 6th grade is doing just fine with Algebra 1 after finishing 8/7. Also, I regret that we didn’t order the newest version because the review said that the new version moves fast without much explanations. Looking at Algebra 1, how it is pacing, we should have bought the newest version considering we really do not need too much in depth explanations for this book anyway as it is basically the same theory from 8/7. I wish there was a way to look into the first a few lessons without buying the textbook and wish there were more description of the deference between 8/7, algebra 1/2 and 1. Hope this review will help others in similar situations. Though lots of review made it sound like Algebra 1 is really hard, it is not hard at all.... not much different from prealgebra. I am confident to say that if your student is doing well- average 85% on 8/7 ( mixed practice), regardless of age (some review recommended to go for Algebra 1/2 if students are too young), skip Algebra 1/2 and go for Algebra 1. I would have gone for the newest version, not the old version.

Much more manageable
My son is really enjoying learning Algebra with Saxon. The best part is the reference number that tells you where a problem was taught.

Saxon Algebra I Homeschool Kit w/ Solutions Man./3rd Edition
I've been pleasantly surprised with using Saxon materials with my daughter. Saxon does have a lot of review and if that's what your student needs, they'll definitely get it with this curriculum.
The Saxon Alg. I HS Kit w. Solutions Manual (third edition) is extremely thorough, everything is laid out for you, and the solutions manual is great if you get a problem incorrect, and you need to find your mistake. So helpful.
While I know Saxon curriculum isn't for everyone, my student thrives with it. As of right now, we'll be continuing on through high school using these materials.
Also, to give a shout out to RRC, they make homeschooling much less stressful. I'm an accidental homeschool mom, and I feel confident knowing that I can get so many different homeschool items at one place.

As novices when we began our homeschooling journey 10 years ago we listened to the advice of a veteran homeschool mom and purchased Saxon as our Math curriculum We havent looked back (or sideways) since She said it was a solid program built on incremental learning and constant reinforcement and thats exactly what it is In public school good teachers can make the difference between fair to average students and students who excel Saxon is the help parents need to be good math teachers We already have the care and desire to make sure our children understand new concepts; with Saxon we can also have the ability (math majors excepted you already know how!) Its all there lessons are written at a level your child can understand with a logical building-block approach We go over the lessons together I supervise the lesson practice to ensure theyve understood then they work on their own for the review problems (from previous lessons lesson # is noted by each problem so that if there is a difficulty they can refer back to that lesson) Ive heard many comments about there being too much review with Saxon To master anything takes constant practice; I believe Math is important enough that the practice is well worth the results I remember dreading math as a child when I didnt understand it But also the confidence (dare I even say - thrill) felt when I did From our experience beginning in Saxon Math K through the present Algebra 2 Saxon can be relied upon to eliminate the fear and instill confidence in your math students To me its just one less thing to worry about!
