Product Description:

Following the same great format as Trail Guide to World Geography (see description), this book focuses on U.S. Geography. This trail guide includes 5-minute daily drills, mapping, building a geography notebook--or using the optional student notebook--and a wide variety of additional projects. The literature unit in this book focuses on the Lewis and Clark expedition, using the book The Captain's Dog, by Roland Smith. Heavily used resources include the Uncle Josh's Outline Map Book or maps available on the Student Notebook CD. Other resources are also recommended to help enhance the study; these are listed below for your convenience. In this edition, all students use the Desk Atlas of the United States. A Geographical Terms Chart is recommended with these and all Trail Guide studies. We do not offer the chart that is recommended; however, it is available through Geography Matters. This Trail Guide was revised and updated in 2015 and includes a new QuickStart Section and new assignments throughout. Please note: students must use 2ed of Student Notebook with this edition. ~ Rachel S.

Publisher Description:

Trail Guide to U.S. Geography is a family-friendly, multi-level geography curriculum guide for students in grades 3 through 12. With its trail markers (animal track icons) guiding your student along three different learning paths, this book can be used for more than one academic school year and works well if you have a number of students of varying abilities learning together.

There is not one exact way to use this unique course. It was designed with flexibility in mind to better meet various objectives when teaching geography. Trail Guide to U.S. Geography provides activities and assignments for a 36-week school year on U.S. Geography.

Spend 5-10 minutes a day with the atlas drills to establish and maintain map reading skills. Some folks use the book strictly for the Geography Trails section alone and say it's worth every penny at that!

Add an outline map with a list of places to label and students have a smooth beginning to creating a great U.S. Geography Notebook. Additional assignment choices lead students deeper to learn about key places throughout the United States. You set your pace and objectives. Spend as much time as your schedule allows. You can always use the book again another year, with all new atlas drills questions.

There are three sections of assignments for each week. You can use all three sections or any combination.

I purchased this curriculum last summer and started using it in September I was very pleased with the product until we reached the second section which covers the Mid-Atlantic region During the first section which covers the New England region I liked how the daily questions pertained to that particular state When we started the Mid-Atlantic section I noticed that the questions no longer pertained to the states that were being covered that week While studying NY one of the questions was "What is the capital of West Virginia?" While covering NJ a question was "What state has Annapolis for its capital city?" While studying Pennsylvania one of the questions was "What river flows through Washington DC?" Not only is this not pertinent Washington DC is not even covered in the Atlas that was suggested for this curriculum I as well as my second grader find this very frustrating I could understand if those states had already been covered and a little review was being thrown in but that is not the case My excitement over this curriculum turned to disappointment I now spend time before each state rewriting the questions so they pertain to that state
