An answer key is also found at found at the back of the book. Workbook exercises begin by introducing a large capital and lower-case alphabet letter on each page, in order from A to Z. Red arrows help direct strokes as students trace the thick letters with their finger first and then trace and write with a pencil in the handwriting section. QR codes can be scanned to hear each sound alongside pictures beginning with the sound. A 2-page crash course offers phonics instruction for the teacher before beginning four levels of phonics activities using blends, digraphs, and short words with more helpful QR codes and handwriting practice throughout. The same characters are used in all the books but are depicted as children in lower-level books (PK-2) while the higher-level books (3-6) show them grown-up. The exaggerated characters and illustrations bring a chuckle, but some parents may appreciate knowing that one character, Bearnice, typically features a crop top and low riding pants that don’t always fit her very well in the older level books. Several of Mrs. Wordsmith’s products use QR codes that kids can scan to hear proper pronunciation of sounds or words.
These materials cover both writing and grammar, but they are more supplemental in scope.
