Description

Kindergarteners will love this colorful activity book with stickers as they’re learning to read! Throughout eight chapters of humorous character illustrations, students will learn 51 letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences in the order they are taught in school. A short, easy-to-follow guide at the front of the book offers a crash course in phonics for teachers before beginning the book. Each lesson includes a QR code to scan and hear the sound pronounced. The student repeats the sound several times before the teacher reads the main word and related sentence aloud, emphasizing where the targeted phoneme is placed. Students trace the letter(s) with their finger before writing them on the lines with a pencil. Extra words with the specific sound are also read and emphasized. Each lesson is followed by a set of fun activity pages reinforcing the same concept. Using the 14 pages of stickers provided in the back of the book for activities also helps to build fine motor skills. High-frequency sight words are also taught periodically throughout the book. Scan the QR code on the back to receive 3 months free access to Word Tag, Mrs. Wordsmith’s vocabulary boosting app with games! 175 pgs. pb. ~Nancie

Category Description for Mrs. Wordsmith

Mrs. Wordsmith is an award-winning company who believes that educational resources should be just as thrilling as the movies and games that kids play! Together with Hollywood artists, game designers, teachers, and other experts, they created a product to captivate and engage children, while accelerating their reading skills. Advertised as being "the silliest learning company" … and I think they live up to it! Each learning product features their trademark gang of goofy animal characters in outlandish situations, causing kids to giggle and engage so that they learn and remember. The same characters are used in all the books but are depicted as children in lower-level books (PK-2) while the higher-level books (3-6) show them grown-up. The exaggerated characters and illustrations bring a chuckle, but some parents may appreciate knowing that one character, Bearnice, typically features a crop top and low riding pants that don't always fit her very well in the older level books. Several of Mrs. Wordsmith's products use QR codes that kids can scan to hear proper pronunciation of sounds or words.
