Category Description for Classical Magic:

If your children don't know Bach from Beethoven and couldnt care less, then check out these surprising books! Author Marjorie Persons is an absolute genius when it comes to making classical music fun and memorable for students, and even better, she has made it easy for you to share classical music with your children in a way you can handle and theyll enjoy. Composer biographies, classical music history, music trivia, and famous classical works are blended seamlessly together in her books.

Themes to Remember Volumes 1 and 2 and Classical Karaoke for Kids all cover famous composers through the Baroque Period, the Classical Period, the Romantic Period, and the Modern Period. Thats from 1600 to the present, just in case youre fuzzy on your music periods! A helpful timeline of composers is included in all three books, and all of the books are also divided by period, with a short description of that musical period at the beginning of each chapter. Several prominent composers are presented for each period, with one or more of their famous works included. For each composer, a one-page biography is featured, along with a realistic portrait of the composer. Any tricky music vocabulary is printed in bold and defined below. Other relevant information for that musical period may also be included here.

Now its on to the fun stuff! Several of each composers famous works are studied after the composers biography, and these are presented in a very interesting way. The

My children enjoy music, both listening and playing, but I also want them to have a deeper knowledge of music history and appreciation so they can be informed listeners, which will, I believe, deepen their enjoyment for the rest of their lives.

MY STANDARD:I always look for something fairly comprehensive at a decent price that I will actually use MY FAVORITE FEATURES (which I couldn't find elsewhere):(1) Each musical theme has two separate tracks: the first has the made-up words and the second is just instrumental In similar products you get just the made-up words (Beethoven's Wig) Here the two tracks make it easy for the kids to learn and to be quizzed (2) The composer and title are announced ON THE CD when the first track of each theme comes on No more fumbling around to find the CD case (or book in this case) to find out what the piece is called CONS: (1) The sound quality isn't great Specifically I compare this to Beethoven's Wig which is a similar product However I think the features mentioned above more than make up for that(2) You will see some composers come up in several volumes but at least a different piece (musical theme) is covered each time This may bother you if you want to cover Bach in one month or at least have all of his Toccato and Fugue in Dm in one go You could still do it but you'd have work to do Also when a composer is repeated the biography is sometimes the same and sometimes only slightly different I wish that all the bios were the same and that the description and explanation of a piece would be on a separate page This would make it easier to know what reading to skip However this is a minor detail At least each text is organized in chronological order with a good number of new composers per volume I purchased the program primarily for its CDs anyway(3) Older children (teenagers) might find the cartoonish pictures childish I don't think the text should be a problem though CONTEXT:We still own and enjoy Beethoven's Wig 1 and 2 We own the two Themes to Remember volume and Classical Karaoke I tried Color the Composers but I wasn't thrilled I have young children We take lots of music lessons SUMMARY: These are very easy to use I also think they're a good value To round out a study of the great composers I'd suggest the Composers Fandex I also suggest some book to study the different instruments I own Story of the Orchestra

We have so enjoyed Classical Magic as a family We are all learning to recognize the different songs on the radio TV in stores and church There is no teacher prep needed - just grab a CD player and enjoy! It is an incredible value cost wise as well The only thing I wish it came with - coloring pages of the composers Other than that - perfect!

We bought Themes to Remember Volumes I and II and have not been disappointedour whole family loves to listen in and have fun with this program Each volume has about 40 classical themes to learnplease note that these themes are short snippets of classical music pieces not the full-length song The CD includes two tracks for each theme one with the music only and the other with lyrics to help you and your family learn the name of the composer and the song The lyrics are quite memorable and often very humorous From Volume I here is an example of a few lyrics for learning the Surprise Symphony: Hadyn has a big surprise go to sleep now close your eyes Music soft and music sweet Jump up on your feet! SURPRISE! For many of the songs you will also learn the historical background which explains which person or event inspired the composer The books are well designed and easy to follow They have a section in the beginning of each book designed to give you drama and dance activities art projects games and other fun ideas for how to make this curriculum work for you and your children You are not required to study the themes in any particular orderit is designed so that you and your children may study the themes which interest you whenever you wishbut within each book the four musical periods and corresponding themes are presented in chronological order: Baroque Classical Romantic and Modern The writer of this book has a very helpful website where you can find schedules and other ideas if you need more assistance My children ages 3 5 and 8 are really enjoying dancing and playing rhythm instruments to these themes and making up pantomimes to act them out This program is obviously wonderful for the auditory learnerbut it is also great for the visual learner as wellthere are cute illustrations to go along with each song and a portrait sketch of each composerfor the older child there is a short biography with an interesting history about each composer For many of the themes there are also stories that may be read aloud or independently to enhance your studies Besides being great for auditory and visual learners this program is good for the hands-on learnersthe author gives so many ideas for getting the children involved and moving! In Volume II she offers simple yet fun ideas for acting out the themes for the Nutcracker Ballet (marching clapping twirling scarves etc) If you feel that you do not have the time and/or the expertise to teach music Themes to Remember would be a great solution for adding music appreciation and music history to your schedule with zero teacher prep time--just pick up the book and read and pop in the CD and listen! If you are too busy to do the hands-on activities you can simply use the CD as car-time learning You and your children will learn so much just from listening to the music This program is well worth the moneyeach volume includes a good quality hardcover book and a CD
