Product Description:

This guide by Matt Whitling provides instruction for teaching ten of Shakespeare's most famous plays including Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Much Ado about Nothing. The instruction is based off and requires a copy of Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb, a readable adaptation of the plays for younger students (listed below). Though the teaching tips are meant for larger classes, the worksheets and test provided are great for homeschoolers. A similar two-page worksheet is provided for each of the ten plays. Students are instructed to record statistics (like plot type, setting, etc.), describe the attributes and roles of characters, summarize the plot, sketch a memorable scene, define vocabulary, and answer comprehension questions. Answers are included. A four-page exam tests all ten of the plays. Most of the questions are short-answer questions, with a few matching. A review sheet is given before the exam for study. An answer key is also provided for the final exam. The back of the book includes Venn diagrams showing how Shakespeare's comedies and tragedies have overlapping themes. Overall, this guide provides great review of Shakespeare's plays and requires minimal effort from teachers. Reproducible, spiral bound, 50 pages. ~ Rachel

I have always liked Matt Whitling's teaching supplements. I met him at a teacher's conference years ago and like his teaching style.

Could someone list the 10 plays covered in this study guide?
Gregory on Jul 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The Comedy of Errors
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Much Ado About Nothing
Taming of the Shrew
The Tempest
Twelfth Night
Winter's Tale
Hamlet
Macbeth
Romeo and Juliet

Study guide is very basic - 2 pages per play and same basic content for each play (plot type, setting, theme, list the principal characters and who they are, three sentence plot summary, select vocabulary, four comprehension questions). It does provide answers in the back (except answers do not include theme), a review study guide and exam, and two Venn diagrams (one for comedies & one for tragedies)

A Good Value
Pros - This is the only guide to studying Tales from Shakespeare that I've found. It has helpful suggestions and a pretty good outline to follow.

Cons - The spiral binding is too small/tight making it impossible to lay the booklet open flat and turn pages easily. It only covers ten of the tales in the Tales from Shakespeare book.

Did this with a co-op. Just right for middle grades. Kids really liked it and we finished the semester with a couple of reader's theater plays I found at the library. The page numbers do not line up with the current texts for vocabulary, but it was a minor inconvenience.
