Description

Who says all science learning needs to happen through textbooks? Engage your child's curiosity using library books, educational videos, and hands on activities to create a personalized learning experience! The study begins with the child identifying (in words or drawings) 5 things he/she would like to learn about space, followed by the action steps of going to a library or bookstore to bring home at least 5 books about space. Topically students will learn about space, the solar system, black holes, planets (including Pluto), space explorations and discoveries, and more through the open-ended activity template pages. There is some repetition built into the activity templates, which include reading time, coloring/doodling, research projects, craft/experiment pages, creative writing, spelling time, and more. A sampling of suggested research topics includes planets/stars, space missions and discoveries, animals in space, the big bang theory/biblical creation, string theory, and astronaut training. Since the template pages are to be filled in, no religious or evolutionary content is included. Families could easily skip these pages. Project suggestions include making a galaxy in a jar, constructing constellations, building a refracting telescope and more. Created to be flexible and self-directed, younger ones may require some assistance (and a couple activities recommend parental assistance). Children will complete 5-10 pages per day, based on abilities. Required supplies include pencils, colored pencils, gel pens, plus common craft/experiment supplies. Some of the supplies include: index cards, regular and mini marshmallows, rubber bands, straws, jars, and tempera paints. Includes black and white illustrations. 250+ pgs, pb. ~ Deanne
