Publisher Description:

Having taught American history a number of times, each time writing (and re-writing) her own materials, Celeste has shared her love of history with many students in her homeschool classes. Designed to be engaging and written in a comfortable style, All American History reads like a good book — bringing America’s story to life piece by piece.

Containing hundreds of images and dozens of maps, All-American History Volume I is a complete year’s curriculum for students in grades 5 – 12 when combined with the Student Activity Book and Teacher’s Guide. It is also adaptable for younger students. The first volume covers Exploration through 1840.

Each week includes a chapter from the Reader, maps, forms, and review questions in the Activity Book, and plenty of hands-on and further research ideas in the Teacher Guide. (As well as great teaching tips, answers to everything, and a great book list!) The teacher book also provides additional hands-on and further research ideas for the younger students you may use this with.

Category Description for All American History:

If you are using an American history course that doesn't go much beyond who discovered what when; who fought who when, and where; who was voted into office in 1797; who invented this, who built that, who wrote such and such a poem, or when such and such a book was written; stop here for just a minute and let me tell you about a history course that will fill in all those blanks. Each volume is a full year of study in 32 weekly lessons aimed at 5th through 8th grade students. Like Mystery of History, each level is made up a hardcover Student Reader that also includes a code to download two digital components: a Companion Guide (student activity book) and a Teacher Guide.

The Reader is not unlike a good story, using plain language, black and white illustrations, and maps to retell the history of America from the earliest explorers of America through to the beginning of the 19th century. Not missing any of the important information found in traditional history texts, students will be drawn into the exploration of history at a much deeper level and in a more diverse way. The author has emphasized the social and cultural aspects of American history to add extra life to the text the clothes people wore, the houses they lived in, the foods they ate, the games they played, the schools they attended all so very important to the study of history, though overlooked at times by many history courses. The chapters are well laid out, and all follow the same basic formula a description of the atmosphere in which the events of the chapter occurred, followed by the body of the chapter in which the events are detailed and the stories told, and concluded with a list of ways the events had an impact on America's future.

The digital, downloadable Companion Guide (included with the Reader) is full of exercises, reviews, map work, and study questions. The digital, downloadable Teacher's Guide/Answer Key contains teaching notes and directions for utilizing both the reader and activity book, answers to all the questions and reviews, games and activities, creative project ideas, timeline strategies, recommended reading lists, family fun activities, and more. However, if you want to take the study of American history more seriously and to a deeper level, the Teacher's Guide also has plenty of options for further study. In fact, while focused mainly on grades five through eight, the Teacher's Guide also contains suggestions for adapting this history course both for children younger than 5th grade and for high school students, using the course in a family setting, the co-op setting (which was originally how this course came into being), and the Christian school setting. Suffice it to say that this American history course by Christian author and history teacher Celeste Rakes is complete and thorough and adaptable to almost any setting a homeschooler would need.

Volume 1 covers early American exploration to the Jacksonians in the early part of the 1800's. Continuing the story of America, Volume 2 picks up at the Civil War, with details of the prelude to the war through to the reconstruction afterward. From that point, the rest of American history is divided into three eras - the Gilded Age (also known as the Victorian Age), the period of the two world wars and the depression, and finally, the Cold War and the 21st Century.

Although this course was previously made up of three separate items, the new inclusion of the downloadable digital Companion Guide and Teacher's Guide into the Reader makes this course even more usable for families using it as a multi-grade history program!

Highly recommended by Cathy Duffy for good reason. We're just in chapter 3 of unit 1, and I am LOVING it. Great additional, doable activities for every lesson that make the course really engaging. The text is a great read as well. I highly recommend, too!

My 11th grader needs a history curriculum. He's not thrilled with dry textbooks and lots of reading. This seems to be engaging and attainable.

It seemed very similar to Mystery of History which my daughter enjoyed and learned from. The multiple ways to process the information seems like it will be a good fit for her learning style.

How many pages long is the activity book?
A shopper on Aug 13, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The disc that comes with the history book contains 308 pages. Not all of it is necessary to print. Each lesson has a map, photos, flags, and questions about the chapter. Each chapter has a review test that is multiple choice, matching, and t/f. The disc provides additional forms for further study that go more in depth on topics such as family life, clothing, and culture of different time periods.
Does this include the downloadable guide?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this edition of the Student Reader does include the downloadable companion guide.
Is this considered religious curricula?
A shopper on Feb 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: My son completed the whole curriculum in the past and it's not religious content; but written by a Christian author. History is taught as it should be, without a religious over-tone. My son's charter homeschool program refused to pay for it though. It's an affordable price so I purchased it myself and I am very happy I did. It's an excellent curriculum. I highly recommend.
What reading level is this?
A shopper on Feb 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The curriculum is accurately noted as 5th -8th grade. However, there are book lists for extra reading in the curriculum that allow you to tailor this curriculum to meet your needs, having book recommendations from upper elementary through high school. If you know how to navigate your library system, it is easy to find books for even early elementary students written on the topics covered in this curriculum, if you happen to have younger students in your family that want to work along side older students. Very functional curriculum!

Thorough and easy to use, which makes it fun for both parent and student.
This looks like it will truly give my daughter a thorough grasp of our great American history. Helps with chronological information and how our history relates to the rest of the world.

Good course for American history. Using this for my 8th grader with the tests that are an additional purchase. All working very well. Each lesson she completes in about 4 days and every 4 lessons she takes a test over the last 4 lessons.

I would recommend!
I love All American History. I purchased the teacher edition so that I could have my kids read other books about the people or situations we were learning about. I only wish the author would do a World History.

This is a great involved highly academic yet creative and interesting approach to American history particularly for older children We are most definitely passionate about history and have a great interest in going beyond scratching the surface an opportunity this curriculum provides This curriculum is laid out well and can simply be opened and used As a very busy homeschooling parent I want to spend more of my time teaching my children than preparing to teach them I appreciate this resource that covers explorers colonies states presidents and so much more in such interesting detail This truly looks like a typical textbook and at first look we were concerned that it would be the average textbook approach that does not fit our family It is not your typical textbook but reads like an interesting account of American history providing new insights details and perspectives The student workbook is wonderful also We purchased one student reader for our three children and they each got to complete certain parts They really looked forward to their turn to write in the book especially the maps they have to complete and the cut and paste activities While I would place this as an upper middle to high school level text our younger children learn and enjoy from this as well The reading is not captivating for the very young though It is much more captivating for children who love history and are simply not satisfied with a quick sweep of historical persons and events Our children learned and retained more information than I thought they would utilizing this program We found it to be well worth the price especially if you have multiple children using it If your family is not history oriented this may not be for you However if your family is intrigued by American history and you enjoy great reading mapping and creativity in learning this may be the blessing for you that it has been for us We are really looking forward to All American History Part II A note on the teacher's manual: If you are going to read and do the activities along with your child you will not need the teacher's manual If your child is working independently you will really appreciate having the teacher's manual
