Product Description:

Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (3rd Ed.):

In the 3rd edition of Wordly Wise 3000 book numbers correspond with typical grade levels (unlike the original edition, Wordly Wise, and the first edition of the 3000 series where it was necessary to add three to the book number to get the grade level). Book 2 includes all the lessons in Book A (1st edition) and lessons 1-7 from Book B (1st edition). It has 15 lessons and 150 vocabulary words. Book 3 includes lessons 8-10 from Book B (1st edition) and all lessons from Book C (1st edition). It also has 15 lessons with 150 words and contains some Greek and Latin root exercises. Students learn 300 new words a year in Books 4-12. Books K and 1 were new with the 2nd edition of the 3000 program, and work just as well with the 3rd edition.

The Student Workbooks contain 20 lessons each with fifteen words. Each lesson includes a Word List with complete dictionary type of entry information, a Finding Meanings exercise (choose two phrases to form a sentence that correctly uses a word), the Just the Right Word exercise (replace a phrase with a single word), an Applying Meanings exercise (using words in context), a Word Study exercise (covers synonyms, antonyms, suffixes, prefixes, and analogies), and a Passage (classic and contemporary authors) with follow-up questions.

The Teacher Resource Books include teacher's guides for the lessons, reproducible tests and reviews, vocabulary activities (including word webs and semantic maps), options for group or individual instruction, pacing options, and answer keys for the tests and Student Book exercises. Tests are designed to prepare students for standardized tests; the format is largely multiple-choice. There are tests for each lesson as well as cumulative midterms and finals. At the upper levels (grade 9-12), each test also features a SAT Sneak Preview section in which additional practice is given in preparation for standardized testing. If you don't think an intensive, thorough teacher guide is necessary, non-reproducible Test Books (with answers) and Answer Keys (for student workbooks) are available separately.

Have an auditory learner? We offer Audio CD sets that correlate to levels 2-12 (no longer available for some levels). These include recordings of each word list to aid pronunciation, along with definitions and comprehension questions, and all reading passages. The number of CDs in each grade level set varies.

The structure of the Kindergarten and 1st Grade Books are a bit different. These vocabulary-building activities include selecting the correct picture in the workbook while the parent reads a story aloud from the teacher pack. Concept and Picture Cards introduce key concepts and words, and the activities prepare students for the kind of content-area reading that they will encounter in later grades. The unique, two-week lesson plans in these beginning books teach and reinforce words and concepts in 20-25 minutes a day. Teacher Packs for K and 1 include extensive lesson plans, Concept and Picture Cards, read-aloud stories and poems, extension and challenge activities, blackline masters, formal and informal assessments for each lesson, assessment checklists and more. At the Kindergarten and 1st Grade levels, these Teacher Packs are a "must-have."

Category Description for Wordly Wise 3000 (All Editions):

Wordly Wise 3000 works. It's a vocabulary-building program that grows with the student, and makes vocabulary acquisition interesting and entertaining. Current editions (4th and 3rd) of Wordly Wise 3000 share a similar format giving interesting word histories, dealing with usage issues, and exposing common usage pitfalls. There are 20 lessons in each level plus five review lessons. Typical lessons contain an alphabetized list of fifteen words (fewer words in lower levels) with a brief, dictionary-type entry for each. These include part of speech, concise definition, and proper usage of the word in the context of an interesting sentence that provides a mnemonic anchor for the word. Following are activity sections which vary slightly with the edition. Crossword puzzles and hidden message puzzles are used for review. The overall word list for the series consists of 3000 words; their selection based on frequency, grade-level literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Course components include a Student Book, an Answer Key, a Test Book, and a Teacher Resource Book. Levels K and 1 of both editions differ a bit from Grades 2-12 levels.

this book bridged a large reading and writing gap with my older children, so I will be using it again in congestion with dictionary skills

Because I didn't know that it's not included in the Teacher Pack.

I liked the old version but since it is going out of print I figured I would try this though I don't like the hefty price tag which comes with the resource book.

We used the Wordly Wise Kindergarten program last year, in first grade, for our struggling reader and our daughter loved it. It is an excellent program for vocabulary and a good supplement to any reading program for reinforcement. We plan to continue with this program.

I noticed the Teachers pack is 3rd edition but this student book is 2nd edition. Is there a 3rd edition student book to correspond with the teachers 3rd edition? If not - any discrepancies between the 2 different editions?
A shopper on Mar 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The Kindergarten and 1st grade Wordly Wise programs are technically first editions but appeared first with WW 3000 2nd edition. They are sometimes referred to as or listed with the 3rd edition. There have been no changes to the program - it is simply being lumped in with the 3rd edition of the other courses.

These books do not have a separate answer key and the expensive teacher's pack is where the stories are for each book. These stories are referred to in the student books and it would be difficult to use the student books without the teacher's pack.
How many weeks/lessons does this cover?
Sarah on Jan 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The book has 5 units, each with 3 lessons. Each lesson is meant to last two weeks, 3-4 days a week, for 30 weeks total. I started in the second week, then spent 6 weeks on each unit, with a week off between each unit, for a total of 36 weeks. My son loved this vocabulary program. It was often the first thing he chose to do!
Do you need the teacher pack? Can you purchase the student book only and get everything out of the program?
A shopper on Mar 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes you need whatever teacher book they recommend- mine is sitting unused on the shelf because I only ordered the student book! I can't even remember now which book they pair with it, if it was just a teacher's book or some pack with more stuff in it, but I do know that I wasn't able to do anything with just the student book. I was too busy to check if they had some sort of guide online you could use with it, maybe that's worth checking into. Hope that helps!
