Category Description for McCall-Crabbs Standard Test Lessons:

Practice reading comprehension and test taking with this series of reading tests. Each book contains a total of sixty short (half-page or less) reading selections followed by eight multiple choice questions. These books employ a reading level determination called a G-score (not a standard evaluation method) with which you can estimate your student's reading level. It is based on the selection and how many of the eight questions were answered correctly. To properly estimate, however, you must give your child a three-minute time period with which to complete the reading and the test. Reading selections are both fictional and non-fictional accounts. The pack of 30 bubble-format answer sheets is no longer available in print format, but you can download a PDF of the sheet below. This can be used for any of the McCall-Crabbs Standard Test Lesson books and makes it easy to give students a score for each lesson and for the entire book. The answer key contains an introduction, directions for use, an explanation of the G-score system and answers for all six books. ~ Megan

BEST ANSWER: No. Answer key is sold separately; includes answers for all 6 student books.
Does g score mean grade level?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: G-scores do not mean grade level. They are a score related only to the McCall-Crabbs testing books and were based on a large field testing in 1978. They are designed to provide the student with a rough estimate of growth and a method of monitoring progress as they move through the different levels of the reading lessons.

My son is 9, in Arizona he needs to pass a reading exam to proceed to 4th grade. A month and a half prior to the exam, my wife and I were informed that his reading comprehension might hold him back. One of my patients (I am a doctor) is a high school principal, I asked him what I could do, he said he and his wife were reading teachers and he found the McCall-Crabbs reading system to be very effective in working on that skill. I sit with my child before school, and he usually reads two passages with me. My wife sits with him at night, and he is getting them more easily and the questions are perfect for helping him to practice the comprehension skills he needs for the test. I have seen significant progress, and we have only been at this for about two and a half weeks. if your child is having trouble focusing on story content and therefore the questions this system is clearly incremental in developing those skills

I love love love McCall-Crabbs books These are precisely the tool that I was looking for to give short daily practice in reading comprehension and I've found other uses for the short passages in the two years that we have been using this resource It takes my children mere minutes a day to answer the eight comprehension questions on each passage but I'm a strong believer in slow and steady winning the race I've seen their comprehension test scores go up significantly since we started using McCall-Crabbs and I simply like the way it makes them think about what they're reading and work out strategies for finding information Beyond just the basic comprehension we have used these to work on keyword outlining with Institute for Excellence in Writing materials we've used them for examining different sentence structures and we've used them in working on specific strategies in test taking (should you read the passage or the questions first?) I appreciate that it doesn't take much of our time that we can easily track our scores from day to day and week to week and my children like to compete with themselves to see how high of a grade-equivalent score they can get or if they can get 8/8 correct many days in a row A lot of bang for the buck for around $4 a book!
