Product Description:

This book is unique in that it gives children a "snapshot" view of 43 children from around the world. The children live in places as diverse as New Jersey, Mongolia, and Argentina. Children from industrialized countries, developing nations, busy cities, rural communities, tribal cultures, and more are included. The book is divided roughly by continent (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Southeast Asia/Australasia), and then unique children from each region get a one or two-page spread to tell about their lives. The children are all shown with their families. Although most have traditional family situations, the book was updated in 2016, and there are now several single-parent families, a divorced couple, a polygamist family (p. 42), and one child's sister is noted as having a wife (p. 14). The book includes tons of photographs and shows and describes their family, home, clothes, prized possessions, food, friends, favorite games, chores, and other aspects of their daily life. Most of the information is given in the captions of the photos and an intro about how old the child is, where they live, and how the family supports itself. The kids are 6-11 years old, and while they have a large variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures, it is interesting to see how much they have in common. 3-11 children are included from every region. 80 pgs, hc. ~ Rachel

Category Description for Galloping the Globe:

Learning new things is easier for young students when tied in to a commontheme. That's why unit studies are so popular and successful. So what aboutGalloping the Globe? It's a unit study centered around geography. Itencourages a detailed look at a selection of countries from the six populatedcontinents as well as the North and South Poles and Christmas around the world.Using the countries being studied geographically as the basic platform, theauthors have included ideas and references, projects and activities forintegrating Bible, people/history, science, literature, vocabulary, internetsources, maps & flags, cooking, music/art, games, puzzles, and crafts intothe curriculum. An aspect to this unit study which is similar to the TrailGuide to... series is the student notebook approach, where the child willactually produce a notebook full of art projects, reports, biographies, geographic dictionary pages, and much more. This is intended to be somethingthey can show to other people, reinforcing and reviewing what they have learnedas they explain various facts to friends and family. This is a fairly flexiblecourse, with a full study of every topic listed taking between two and threeyears to complete. You can also pick and choose projects to simply make this ayear long course. While geography is the main focus of this unit study, it doesa good job of including the resources needed to study the other subjects, too.Answers are included and the consumable work pages are reproducible (and are also now found on the included CD-ROM in PDF format, which makes it even easier to use with multiple children). There are several recommended resources which are used multiple times throughout the course. If you are interested in purchasing these, please see below. Items without prices are those that we do not currently carry. Please note that the resource list has been recently revised to accommodate for items that were going out of print, and several new resources have been added. This is the newest version, which was revised in 2010 and includes a CD-ROM of printable forms, activity sheets, maps and flags. CD is Win/Mac compatible; requires Adobe Reader (a free download). 266 pgs, pb. ~ Zach

Does this tell you the names of various ethnic groups such as Hmong, etc... and ways those cultures are unique, or does it more focus on typical family and lifestyles diversities children your child's friends might have and uses countries as a backdrop to introduce these?

BEST ANSWER: It gives a very general overview of each continent, then spotlights a handful of children from each one. You may get some specific information about a child and their family that would include an ethnicity, a custom, or religion, but I would say this book is a very light, non comprehensive survey of cultures. It's valuable as a fun introduction, but not much more than that.

This engaging book gives you glimpses into the lives of 44 children from different parts of the world. We use it as a supplemental resource with our social studies and geography homeschool courses. My children love looking at the pictures and learning interesting little tidbits about others. **There are a few places parents may want to be forewarned about so they can be prepared for discussion- for instance, one child is pictured with his sister and her wife, another child has a father who has two wives.

My children love this book We checked it out from the library so many times I eventually had to buy our own copy We used it as a supplement to Galloping the Globe but they always wanted more pages once we finished the one that went with our geography study It is very carefully written addressing cultural differences with sensitivity and the pictures and names make far away places very personal to the reader
