Publisher Description:

Let's face it—math is not an easy subject to teach! And choosing just the right math curriculum for your child can be even harder! At Alpha Omega Publications, we'll start you on your way toward a successful homeschool math experience. Teach math basics with LIFEPAC 1st Grade Math and watch your math worries melt away! LIFEPAC Math courses use mastery-based learning along with spiraling review to encourage student success. In this homeschooling math program, students focus on mastery of a single skill, and then move on to learn new skills. This approach builds a strong foundation in basic math skills which paves the way for ever-increasing levels of proficiency. LIFEPAC 1st Grade Math focuses on the introduction of math basics in ten colorful worktexts.

What will your student learn? Topics in this Alpha Omega curriculum focus on skills such as number order, skip counting, measurements, shapes, place value, number words, number sentences, fractions, time, money, using a number line, adding, and subtracting. As your child progresses through this engaging course, a wide variety of activities solidify these principles and skills in your child's mind, creating a foundation for understanding future concepts. Our must-have teacher's guide provides step-by-step teaching instructions for every page of the program, a complete answer key, and lots of ideas for additional activities designed to reinforce important math concepts.

Category Description for LIFEPAC Mathematics:

A complete, Christian math curriculum that emphasizes skill mastery. Each Complete Boxed Set contains ten LIFEPACs and a teacher guide. The only exception is the Grade K Boxed Set, which contains two student books and a teacher guide. LIFEPACs only (no teacher guide) are also available for use with multiple students. Review and self-tests are built into the curriculum. LIFEPACs are thin, consumable student work texts. They are colorful in the elementary grades, but become less colorful as the grade level increases. Each set of ten LIFEPACs provides a year-long curriculum.

The spiral-bound teacher's guide contains a curriculum overview, teacher's notes, answer keys, and suggested guidelines (for scheduling, grading, study methods, etc). Daily lesson plans are not included. Teacher guides for grades K-1 provide more detailed teaching instruction than guides for grades 2-12. Why? Because the LIFEPAC curriculum facilitates the independent study approach. Starting in second grade, written instruction is included in each LIFEPAC so that the lessons are largely self-instructional. The teacher's responsibilities include introducing each LIFEPAC, setting a schedule, completing teacher checks, being available for student questions, administering and grading tests, and developing additional learning activities.

You might be wondering, "What's the difference between this curriculum and Horizons Math?" After all, both programs come from the same publisher and follow a similar scope and sequence up to the sixth grade. The main difference, in my opinion, is that Horizons is not self-instructional (written instruction is not included in workbooks). Another difference is that LIFEPACs offer standard practice problems whereas Horizons offers a greater variety of problems (mazes, decoding, etc) as well as standard drills, but LIFEPACs provide many more problems per workbook page. ~ Anh

I taught in the private (KG) and public schools grades 1st & 2nd for 4 years and in those 4 years I never taught anything as thorough and solid as this curriculum! It has provided solid learning for my 3 children! Im especially impressed with the math and language arts curriculum with constant review and mastery learning Ive read the other reviews and I am amazed to realize how many parents think that learning always has to be fun! If you ask ANY child that goes to the public schools school is fun because of their friends NOT because of the school work This curriculum teaches more than the concepts presented it teaches children to sit down stay focused and get their work done! I love it! Now THATS preparing them for real life because the jobs that they will have one day will require them to do just thatnot to mention going to college and sitting through one boring lecture after another taking notes then taking tests This curriculum also builds confidence as children are constantly reviewed over each skill until they have mastered it I cant say enough good things about this curriculum Im offended that someone would suggest that this is lazy homeschooling! Im raising children that are learning to become independent and responsible to get their work done using this curriculum My children arent completely dependent on me for every moment of learning I thought parenting is teaching our children to grow up to be responsible and independent from us This curriculum is an excellent tool to begin that process! Love love love this curriculum!

I like that this curriculum is well organized and very thorough The teacher's guide is a great help for me in explaining the math concepts to my 6-year-old daughter and also helps in planning the daily lessons with a list of needed materials Sometimes my daughter does not like to complete the work sheets full of addition and subtraction problems but I find them to be good practice in learning the facts She likes the sheets with the colored pictures though My only concern is that it is taking us twice as long to complete the work books as is recommended and we will probably still be working on these throughout the summer and into second grade The suggested 45 min/1-5 worksheets a day is just too much at once for us and we have chosen to do 1 worksheet a day/4 days a week but she is grasping all the concepts before moving on and is doing well on the tests That is another thing I do like about this curriculum; the tests so I can see where her strengths and weaknesses are Overall I am happy with this curriculum and it is what I expected it to be
