Subtitled, “Creation to the Resurrection,” and written at a 4th-5th grade reading level, this volume begins with creation (dated as c4004 BC). This volume (the Reader) contains 108 history lessons (more than other volumes in this series), with a three-lesson-per-week format for 36 weeks. Key historical people and events (with dates to memorize) include Abraham, Tutankhamen, David, Kingdom of Israel Dividing, Babylonian captivity, Buddha, Confucius, Golden Age of Athens, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Augustus Caesar, and Jesus Christ. Note that this volume stops at Jesus’ resurrection and may align differently with other chronological history texts which stop typically at the fall of the Roman empire. Included with the purchase of the Reader is an in-text, user-unique, online access code to download the course-required digital PDF Companion Guide. These files include teacher directions, study guides, pre-tests, quarterly worksheets, quizzes, exercises, worksheets, activity instructions (with photos), tests, outline maps, suggested resource lists, appendix pages and more. Utilizes NKJV references, unless otherwise noted. 397 pgs, hc.

Publisher Description:

Introducing The Mystery of History, Volume I in an engaging NEW FORMAT! Our 3rd edition of this beloved history curriculum will now look like Volumes III and IV, with a beautiful full-color hardback Student Reader and an improved Companion Guide. As with Volume IV, a download code for a free digital copy of the new Companion Guide will be included in the Student Reader. The Mystery of History, Volume I is written from a Christian, young-earth, perspective, teaching children to see Gods hand throughout history and how the Gospel of Jesus is the mystery behind all of history! Written in a conversational style, many lessons are presented in the form of mini-biographies, integrating fascinating stories with the events of the time. Covering creation to the resurrection, this curriculum is arranged by quarters and weeks; each quarter begins with an Around the World summary of events to introduce the time period; lessons progress chronologically, with each week having 3 lessons, a pretest, review activities (including Memory Cards), and exercise or quiz. This book integrates the text with write-in activity pages. These activity pages are reproducible for in-family use, or students can write directly on the worksheets.

The Student Reader contains 108 exciting lessons in a colorful, easy-to-hold hardback. Divided into 36 weeks, the reader is a standalone world history text for all ages to enjoy. But for those who wish to delve deeper, we have included a download code in each book for a digital version of The Mystery of History Companion Guide, Volume I. The reproducible resources of the Companion Guide, also written by Linda Lacour Hobar, contain familiar and popular components of The Mystery of History series: pretests; hands-on activities and research projects for younger, middle, and older students; memory card ideas; bi-weekly quizzes and exercises; timeline helps; maps; supplemental book lists; and more.

Written for 4th- to 5th-grade reading level for independent reading. However, as a read-aloud, family study, or classroom program, The Mystery of History can accommodate grades 1-12.

What's New?

New hardcover binding

Beautiful full color imagery

Updated digital Companion Guide containing all student pages, learning aids, and teacher resources

Learning ancient history from a Bible-centered perspective is still the focus of the 3rd edition of Mystery of History, Vol. 1 However, with the 3rd edition, the format has been updated to be similar to Vol. IV. The biggest change is that it is changing from a paperback book to a hardcover with full color illustrations.  Short, interesting readings show how history fits together. What famous Bible figure lived when the Trojan Horse was built? Who lived in North America around the time that Jeremiah wrote Lamentations? Historically accurate with better chronological detail based on the work of James Ussher, the book tells you who walked the earth when and helps put each life in perspective around important events that happened worldwide. Mapping exercises with answers and simplified timeline directions are included along with suggestions for fun activities. Quarterly reviews and semester tests are provided. All student materials is reproducible for family use. Although this is intended for 4-8 graders, it is easily adapted to both older and younger students for an all-in-one history book. Assignments are included for all grade levels.

Purchase of the hardcover Student Text includes a digital access code to download the Companion Guide. This guide includes PDF files of all of the reproducible materials including pre-tests, quizzes, exercises, worksheets, activity instructions, tests, outline maps, resource lists, appendix pages and more. A printed Companion Guide is also available to purchase for those preferring a physical copy. Information to access the digital component is included on a separate card included in the textbook. Shrink wrapped.

Category Description for Mystery of History:

This conversationally written, chronological, 4-year-cycle program is specifically designed so that multiple ages can simultaneously study God’s sovereignty throughout history, from Creation to the 21st century. History is His story, after all. As a Christ-centered study written by a home school mom, each reader volume in the series chronicles key individuals and events that demonstrate the hand of divine providence through the highs and lows of human history. Tough elements are not ignored, and key church history is included. Trace the hand of God through historical events. Volume 1 focuses on Ancient History (ending with the life and resurrection of Jesus); Volume 2 Middle Ages; Volume 3 Renaissance, Reformation & Growth of Nations; and Volume 4 studies Revolutions to Rising Times (1708 - 2010). Each volume provides from 28 to 36 weekly lessons. Reading level will advance in difficulty as learners work through the 4-volume cycle (See individual descriptions for details). This program adapts easily to a classical, Charlotte Mason, or more traditional approach.

The essential hub of the course is the Reader Text, which includes a unique-user PDF download code of the volume-specific Companion Guide. This course achieves a nice balance of structure, routine, and consistent learning versus variety, choice, and independent customization. The 3 weekly required lessons found in the Reader are framed among pleasant layout and appealing full-color photographs. Read the narratives aloud or have older students read independently. The remaining necessary components come from the Companion Guide: teaching information and directions, the scope and sequence, the pretest, quarterly worksheets, tests and quizzes, mapwork, timeline (called the Wall of Fame), and memory cards (key details of each key historical element learned that week). For mapwork assistance, the publishers highly recommend the customizable, digital WonderMaps (item 082644) or these 2 book-based atlases: The Student Bible Atlas (item 00167 particularly for Volume 1) or Rand McNally’s Historical Atlas of the World (item 00733). Thus far, the amount of work I’ve described might suffice for students, particularly in grades 1-6. But then you’d miss out on all the included items which allow you to personalize to your specific goals, family situation, students—and you!

As a convenience, printed Companion Guides are available on our website as separate purchases for Volumes 1-4. Whether using the digital or printed, the additional suggestions and optional resources provide a wealth of options for different ages. The 500+ pages specifically tailored to each volume include the required course items, as well as hands-on activities for younger, middle, and older students (with any needed instructions or templates and photos); field trip suggestions; semester tests; research and writing exercises; a detailed supplementary Book and Resource list (general books, Bible, read-alouds, references, and creation science museums/zoos); and Lesson Resources (specific books, films, and Bible chapters that correlate to lessons in the Student Reader).

Optional resources are now available as digital downloads. These include Challenge Cards, Notebooking Pages, Folderbooks, Super Supplemental Set, and Cookbook. The Challenge Cards contain over 300 question-and-answer cards and a dozen game ideas. Coloring Pages include 36 collage-style coloring pages. Notebooking Pages include ruled & unruled pages for hand-written narration, information pages, and fillable PDF pages for computer use. Folderbooks (a.k.a. lapbook) can be downloaded as well. Providing your own manilla folder, and using the included items, students create folders representing content from the lessons. The Super Supplemental Set includes all 4 items as downloads in one purchase. The Volume 2 downloadable Cookbook includes historical recipes from the Early Church and the Middle Ages. Audio books of each Volume are available for purchase at the author's web site. Make the road to understanding His Story throughout time a delight with this history series! ~ Ruth

My oldest loves learning about ancient history, especially anytime there are matters of suspense involved. When I told her about this book for her upcoming year, her eyes lit up and she was beyond excited (and the fact that it goes right along with the Bible is just the icing on the cake for us both).

I've been told that this program can work well for my two children who will be in 2nd and 4th grades, as the activities are set up for children K-3 K, with a different set of activities for 4 through 6, and a 3rd set for middle school. I wanted my children to understand history's timeline so that they could correctly understand history from the foundation.

After a lot research, our family can't wait to begin using this history curriculum with such a strong Biblical base. We've always loved our chronological Bible for family studies, this curriculum will really tie everything together for us!

Is there a teacher and student book or are they the same?
Michele on May 4, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The boo is for the student. It comes with a code that gives you a free download of The companion guide that contains teacher suggestions, answers to activities and map work, book suggestions, BiBle reading suggestions, etc. The companion guide is extensive. About 500 pages.
Is there an audiobook available to this edition?
A shopper on Apr 30, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Yes there is an audio book to go along with all of mystery of history books. You would have to find out who has them in stock at this time though.
Does this purchase include the code to download the companion guide? Thanks!
A shopper on Jan 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the third edition includes a download code for the companion guide inside the front cover
Is the 3rd edition student reader available in print now?
A shopper on Sep 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this item is the Student Reader - Mystery of History Vol 1.
Just to confirm, This is the new student reader for the 3rd edition? Correct?
A shopper on Sep 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that is correct.
Does the book include test and quizzes, or is that the CD, companion book, or both, and when will the companion book be released?
Stephanie H on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: With this 3rd Ed revision of Mystery of History Volume 1, the test/quizzes/activities, etc (companion book content) is available as a download from the Mystery of History website (accessible with code supplied with purchase of the text).
Other than being a hard cover instead, what are the differences between the third edition and the first edition? (I need MoH Vol 1 for an upcoming co-op class and I already have the soft cover first edition of volume 1.)
Brooklyn on Aug 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: While the content of the 3rd edition and the 2nd edition is mostly the same (very small, occasional tweaks for wording, etc.), there were numerous changes with the 2nd edition from the original 1st edition. The 2nd Edution had updated lessons to reflect current research, spiced up layout, additional teacher support, answer key maps, and added 144+ pgs (672 total).

As you've noted the 3rd edition is a hardcover reader and the companion activity pages are available as a free download.
Are the pages reproducible?
User on Mar 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There is a copyright, so in your house only. They are perforated. I actually bought the companion guide CD as I will use each volume 3 to 4 times. I did not want to keep track of the loose leaf sheets.
Is there a list of supplemental books that are suggested/required for this curriculum? I noticed that CELEBRATING BIBLICAL FEASTS is required. Are there others?
A shopper on Jan 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I did not purchase any other books with this curriculum. There are so so many suggested activities within this curriculum. Unless you or and your child are extremely interested in this specific topic I don't think that you would need the book. We did buy the timeline figurines and did the timeline as suggested with this curriculum and found that be beneficial and helpful to not need to take the time to create all our own figurines. I hope this helps.
What does this curriculum teach about Jesus?
A shopper on Jul 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is a very Biblical curriculum. She does a great job of laying out events in interesting lessons and mixes Bible events with other things that happened all around the world in chronological order. We enjoyed this so much! She gives options to suit your needs as far as how many activities you want to do. We don't do many of the suggested activities but we do the quizzes/tests, memory cards and the timeline, they really enforce the lesson.
As far as what it teaches about Jesus, it's very Gospel oriented. Jesus is the savior of the world, fully God and fully man at the same time; dying for our sins and defeating death by his resurrection.
The author's purpose with this curriculum is to show how God has and is working through mankind in all the world throughout history to accomplish his purposes.
Could I use this with my six year old first grader this year or is there something else you recommend? The age recommendations on the book is 4-8th grade. Thanks!
A shopper on May 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I combined MOH for my 5th and 1st grader, so yes I think it can work. The book has activities for younger, older and oldest students which was helpful. Also, if your family likes learning through stories, MOH will appeal to them since the author narrates in a lively way. We didn't do so many of the activities but we enjoyed making the timeline cards - I would write for my 1st grader and she would illustrate what she remembered of that event.
Is the supplemental CD a good buy, or is all of that included in the book?
A shopper on Feb 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It depends on which supplemental CD you are referencing.
#001304 - Companion Guide - are student worksheets included (and reproducible) with the Volume 1 text. The Companion Guide CD is pdf files which allows you to print from the file rather than copying from the text.

https://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=001304

The Volume 1 Craft Pack CD - #037864 - is material that is not included in the text.

https://www.rainbowresource.com/proddtl.php?id=037864
How much illustrating and such would we miss out on if we did just the CD's?
A shopper on Sep 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Do you mean just listen to the story on the CD's? Or do you mean just buy the extra resources cd? I don't have the extra resources CD but I do have the book and the CDs of the readings. The CD is only the author reading the exact words printed in the lesson in the book. It's usually about 1 1/2 pages in the book. She does not explain further, or offer any activities, or anything extra. The book is what has the teacher info, mapwork, pictures, quizzes and tests, and the activities. There are activities for each lesson for younger students, middle students, and older students, and sometimes more than one for some age categories. We don't do all the activities but we do some, as many as I feel we can allow time for in a given week. I do the program 3x/week with my kids.
Is this the latest revision?
Marsha Q on Oct 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It's the Second Edition, which is the latest as far as I know. We borrowed the First Edition from our library before we bought this. The Second is a bit larger with some updates to earlier scholarship and a few other changes. Either is adequate, in my opinion.

Best "whole family history program" ever!
I used to do unit studies with my kids, but as our family has grown, age differences made it very hard for me as a mom. I was looking for a history curriculum that we could all read together and then let each kid work on activities at their own level, but that was open and go for me as the teacher. This book has that and more! It's Biblically sound, teaches a timelines and stories approach to history, is genuinely fascinating even to younger kids, and I learn new things every day with my children. I wish I'd found it years ago. Best history we've ever used! We'll never switch programs!

Busy, Vague Curriculum with Too Much Focus on Israel
For K-3, I can see this textbook being of value. It has general stories, the type that grandma could tell you by the bedside or by a fireplace. But for mature students, avid readers, it requires a lot of supplements, and the suggested resources are time-consuming and difficult to find and to time. If you travel or have a reluctant reader, the textbook audio on a CD is well done. If you have a reluctant reader then drawing, not notetaking is recommended. If you have a reluctant writer than lapbooking is recommended. However, lapbooking is dull. Some people love the Evan-Moor history pockets from instead. The Learning Cards are of little value to older kids, because they are vague. We tried all components, completely worked through 1/2 of the curriculum and read the whole textbook before decided to move on. Oh, the 15 or so prophet stories/chapters is what really was the pivital moment for us in deciding to move away from this series. These chapters sounded very vague and similar to one another. Pretesting and testing is easy for all ages. We regret spending our money and time on this curriculum.

Good but not great.
We wanted something that would teach biblical history along side world history so my student could see and understand that things the bible were happening at the same time as these other world events and not separately. To bring the biblical more to life. But I am finding that there is so much biblical history (which is great) but barely touches on the world history. I seem to be always looking for more to supplement, the activities are not always feasible or interesting, they seem to miss the mark often.

Great for multiple students/grades
We have used MoH this year and loved it! Short lessons make it so even younger students are kept engaged, and the sections are 3 lessons long, which make it quite doable to finish a section per week. The kids have enjoyed drawing for the time line, and it really helps to see it all laid out like that. The assignments at the end of each lesson (or chapter) are arranged in a young student (simple) to older student (harder) fashion, which helps make it easy to use for multiple grades. I appreciate the God-centered world-view, as well. I have home schoolers from grade 2-5, and this curriculum makes it so we can do history all together. A winner for this mom!

Wanted to Love It
MoH Vol. 1 sounded like a great option for us this year and the reviews were glowing. I also purchased "History Timeline Through the Ages" timeline book and a pictorial timeline set to assemble as we progressed through MoH.

We've been at it for 3 months. My sons (4th and 3rd) enjoy the review tests and review activites but are not loving the lesson text. I was hoping for more "meat" from this volume but will stick with it this year.

We are 1/3 through and I consistently feel that the lessons are lacking in interesting material that causes wonder in the child. The authors own opinions are sprinkled through out the text. I would rather my own child develop their opinion/wonder from the facts of the text or through their own connections of events -unprompted by an author.

Some of the chapters are very short and a rewording of biblical text with the authors opinion added.

I have had to modify the middle student activities for my elementary aged sons as many of the the suggested younger student activities seem silly (Lesson 28: With lightweight blocks, construct two mighty pillars. Close your eyes and knock them down.")

Our family loves documentaries on ancient history and cultures through the ages. I was hoping this series would be more interesting for myself and my sons.
