A very unique English program that teaches grammar, language skills and writing using consistent, formulated techniques. If you like oral recitation, you'll love this program! And, at levels 1-8 the program is totally interactive. If you're a little uncertain of your English teaching skills or tend to be disorganized - fear no more. Nothing is left to chance. The teaching is totally scripted and lessons are very systematic. There aren't even any teacher preparation pages. Author Brenda Shurley suggests you stay one lesson ahead of your students and study it thoroughly before presenting. This is a good idea because, occasionally, you will need to plan ahead for materials for some of the activities.

Lessons are grouped 5 per chapter to be taught at the rate of one chapter per week. The course will take about 26 weeks to complete if you hold to this schedule. Lessons vary in length and will take from 20-50 minutes each day. There is some variety in lesson format, but each lesson has one or more of the following components: Jingle Time, Grammar Time, Skill Time, Study Time, Writing Time, Activity/Assignment Time, Practice Time, Vocabulary Time, Test Time, Check Time.

Jingle Time begins many of the lessons and has students recite all of the previously-taught jingles. All of these are printed in the first section of the student workbook for easy reference. In the Teacher's Manual, they appear only as introduced. You are supposed to lead the recitation, so it would be helpful to put a post-it note on these pages (you are not allowed to xerox any part of the student workbook). The Instructional CD contains an audio version of the jingles which you can also use as an accompaniment. The narrator has a very pleasant voice. Some of the jingles are actually sung, but most are recited. Some rhyme and have a definite beat, others are just recitations. Jingles are used to define the various parts of speech. When committed to memory, they will help your student remember each part of speech, how it functions, and how to identify it. The Preposition Jingle has you memorize 49 prepositions (though I must say it's not as catchy as our homeschool version which has 53 prepositions sung to the tune of "Joy to the World").

Grammar Time is spent analyzing sentence construction, identifying each part of speech in the sentence. New parts of speech are introduced and an Oral Question and Answer Flow orally picks apart sentences, identifying each part of speech. All of the script appears in the Teacher's Manual so you can lead the recitation. Sentences are classified as Introductory Sentences (sentences which will be used in the lesson to introduce new parts of speech) or Practice Sentences (which classify sentences using previously-learned parts of speech). These sentences must be written on the board or on notebook paper for your student. Optionally, you may purchase a Practice Booklet which contains them all. Students who have previously used the method can classify these Practice Sentences independently, then check their answers using the Practice CD.

Skill Time teaches a wide assortment of language and word skills like subject-verb agreement, homonyms, personal pronoun-antecedent agreement, regular vs. irregular verbs, similes and metaphors, editing, and so on.

Writing Time is sometimes an assignment to make a journal entry, while in other lessons, it is the entire lesson, teaching students to use specific forms in writing. Some of the writing forms introduced in Level 4, for example, are the three-point paragraph, point of view, time-ordering, persuasive essay, writing with dialogue, narrative writing, and descriptive writing. These are all done by strict formula with models and sometimes templates included.

Activity/Assignment Time gives instruction for an interesting Activity or Assignment that puts some of this learning into practice. It might be a writing assignment, Sentence Hopscotch, planting a Parts of Speech Garden, or a challenge - like going the rest of the day without using a personal pronoun in any of your conversation! In Level 4, students may write poems.

Practice Time refers students to an exercise to complete in the Practice Section of their workbook. Answers are in the Teacher's Manual. Two Vocabulary Times are included per chapter. These introduce four words - two antonyms, two synonyms - for students to define in their Vocabulary notebooks (aided by a dictionary or thesaurus) and use each in a written sentence.

Lesson 4 of almost every chapter has a Study Time, Test Time and Check Time. Students will study all of their vocabulary words in their Vocabulary Notebooks as well as any skills in the Practice Section they need to review. After taking the Chapter Test, you will go over it with them and discuss it (Check Time). Answers are found in the Teacher's Manual.

This program is a very easy English program to teach and will particularly appeal to parents wanting to use a classical approach of instruction. Every step is planned, every lesson scripted, every writing assignment taught and modeled with very specific instruction. There is virtually zero preparation time and all the audio and visual teaching aids are provided. Children will learn parts of speech and many grammar and usage skills thoroughly - largely through oral recitation. They will learn how to use a dictionary and thesaurus and increase their vocabularies. They will continually review and practice material until it is mastered.

Homeschool kits contain a voluminous Teacher's Manual, a student workbook and an Instructional CD. The Student Workbook consists of a Jingle section (with lyrics to all of the Jingles), Reference section (vocabulary words, charts, rules, checklists and any material that would be in a handbook for the course), Practice Section (exercises), and Test Section (Chapter Test forms). You will need one for each student, so they are sold separately, also.

Practice sets contain the Practice Booklet and Practice CDs (Level 8 does not include a Practice Booklet). The Practice CDs contain audio files of the sentences in the Practice booklet. [The Practice Booklet and CD are not necessary in order to complete the course but they do make it easier on the teacher relieving her of daily sentence-writing and allowing the student to work somewhat independently with the CD to classify and then check the sentences. The Practice Booklet can be used without the CD.]

I decided to go with this curriculum after my kindergartner ended the school year unable to recognize a complete sentence. My older son had used this curriculum at a classical hybrid homeschool/charter, and I felt the jingles and organized approach to writing would help him.

My MIL highly recommends Shurley English. All of her kids specifically referenced things they had learned through Shurley when taking college entrance exams, and all have excellent writing skills.

After seeing the fruit of using this entire curriculum with my oldest son, as well as how much he grew to love English and doing Shurley, I am ordering to begin my next son in the program.

Which level should my 9 year old start with? He has been through one year of Essentials with Classical Conversations. I am finding that I am not getting enough direction with teaching him basic punctuation and enough detailed grammar to connect the dots. Also, I have a 6 year old who is def a late learner. He also doesn't like "school" He can read three letter words and we haven't done much formal work up until recently. Mainly numbers, phonics, calendar and a little time.

Shurley English Homeschool Kit Level 2
BEST ANSWER: Level 2 would work fine. Each year repeats itself while stepping things up a notch on how in depth it is. I woyld not worry about grammar with your 6 uear old, until he can read better. It will just be too frustrating.
is Shurley English a secular curriculum?
A shopper on Oct 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It doesn't have any faith-based material in it. However, we are a Christian family and we found this curriculum to be EXCELLENT! Our son has special needs and he totally excelled in this program! We didn't use the jingles since we are in Classical Conversations, so we used our own songs. This program totally prepares your child for the next level of English grammar. From a teaching aspect, it's very simple and gives you EVERYTHING you need to teach your child. 5 stars from this family!!!

Shurley Method Literature Selections Level 1
BEST ANSWER: I did not purchase the literature selections book b/c I am doing my own literature selections. To answer your question, no it is NOT essential to have the literature selections in order to use the grammar curriculum. It is a supplement. You may enjoy it if you don't already have your own literature curriculum, but you don't need it in order to use the Shurley grammar curriculum.
How many chapters or lessons does level 1 include? Is this usually taught 5 days a week for 33-36 weeks?
Heather M on Sep 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There are 28 chapters with 5 lessons in each chapter. I teach one chapter per week. Since we do book work 4 days a week (we have one Community day with Classical Conversations), I usually combine lesson 2 and 3 or whatever seems most natural. I really love Shirley English. I started with level 2 for my eldest daughter and it was a big jump into English. Level 1 with my youngest is amazing. She is already familiar with the Jingles (from her sister) but is not yet reading/writing on her own. We are in Chapter 6 of level one and my five year old is classifying sentences like pro! Love, love, love this curriculum :) Oh, it takes us 15-30 mins to do a lesson. And don't worry about the length of time (your question mentions 33-36 weeks of study). We take summers completely off and each year, the jingles bring all the grammar flooding back into their minds! It's a solid curriculum, with as much "fun" as English could muster, with no distracting/time filling fluff.

Last year was my first year of homeschooling To put it mildly I was nervous English had me especially scared It was never my strong subject and I still never really understood what a preposition or a predicate was This program walked me right through it Not only did all three of my kids learn-- I finally get it! It was fun to teach fun to learn and it teaches so much more than public school would ever dream of All children should have the opportunity to learn this way I haven't tried any other products but I can't imagine anything better It's worth it's weight in gold! It rates as reason enough to home school!

My daughter was diagnosed with an unidentified neurological disorder Public school told me she would never be able to read among other things This of course prompted me to begin homeschooling In three years my daughter had indeed learned to read Although she could read it held no value because the words meant nothing to her unless it was something she could hold in her hands and touch Following state requirements I began teaching English right away but didn't find Shurley English until her third grade year I began with 1st grade Shurley English since she failed to understand anything I had previously tried Within a couple of weeks something clicked in her brain I'm not entirely sure what part of the program helped the most but for the first time my daughter could use verbs adjectives and adverbs in her spoken and written language She could look up something in the dictionary see the word with the part of speech use the sentence flow method and figure out what the word really means and how to use it properly in a sentence Most importantly she understands! She really understands! It took us two years to get through the first book Since then English has become her favorite subject Now we are catching up to her peers Better yet she now enjoys reading! Thank you Shurley English

This is a fantastic all-in-one program Those tough grammar concepts that are often boring and difficult to grasp are so easily picked up and learned in this program! I never imagined my 1st grader to be able to classify nouns verbs adverbs adjectives prepositions so easily Since this was scripted I knew it would be easy to teach but hesitated a little-- thinking that it would feel restrictive Think again! This well thought out program takes each item step-by-step in increments just the right length It doesn't overwhelm the child with tons of practice just a few sentences each day It has rhymes that are easily learned and aid in figuring out what each part of the sentence does The program is well worth it's money as the proof is in the pudding! My child is excelling with this but an older child of mine on a different curriculum (who is very bright and learns things easily) has had to take a more intensive approach with daily grammar in addition to the regular English program This program makes learning so easy at such a young age that repeating intensively later on will never be necessary therefore saving a lot of time! Very little teacher prep is necessary only occasionally does the teacher do anything out of the ordinary and even then it is incredibly easy The teacher does work with the student each day but at this grade (grade 1) this is very typical That said it still is not time consuming This works well for moms who have little time to prep and want to have maximum effect for their time without having to gather additional resources-- it's all there including writing! The side benefit is that my younger ones often start reciting as soon as my first grader starts Who knew it would be this easy? All in all this program is a big thumbs up!

I just had to write this review to say what a wonderful program this has been for my kinesthetic hands-on learner Shurley English takes a scripted lesson approach that involves much daily repetition and review of the concepts learned While some may view this as a negative the activities are very hands-on involving crafts and songs and jingles The scripted lessons are often far from boring involving stories and rhymes The proof for our family has been my daughter who was struggling learning grammar concepts In just a few weeks she is dancing around the house singing the "noun" song She spends her free play time wearing a crown and playing with her younger siblings as a "king" in the royal "sentence council" She has them bring groups of words to her so she can decide if she could declare them a "sentence" or a "fragment" We LOVE this program!
