Category Description for Elementary Algebra (Jacobs):

Now published by Master Books, Harold Jacobs' Elementary Algebra is the same thorough algebra course it has always been. This course is the equivalent of Algebra 1 and covers the basic algebraic concepts from a review of operations and functions through quadratic equations and number sequences. The chapters are Fundamental Operations, Functions and Graphs, Integers, Rational Numbers, Equations in One Variable, Equations in Two Variables, Simultaneous Equations, Exponents, Polynomials, Factoring, Fractions, Square Roots, Quadratic Equations, Real Numbers, Fractional Equations, Inequalities and Number Sentences this is the same chapter sequence as found in the previous edition of this text. A midterm and final review are included in the text as well.

Master Books assures us that there have been no changes in content even the problems in the exercises have remained the same. If you are familiar with the older text, one thing you will miss is some of the cartoons; however, some were kept in the text to add to the readabilityand a bit of humor never hurts. Although Master Books is a Christian company, this text doesn't proselytize there is no Christian content.

Lessons in the Student Textbook begin with concepts, and Mr. Jacobs makes sure you understand the why' before tackling the how.' The text's thorough explanation bite-size amounts of information make this a very popular program for understandability. There are still four sets of exercises in each lesson Set I reviews ideas from previous lessons for that continual review; Set II and Set III practice concepts taught in the lesson (Set III exercises are found in the teacher guide more on this in a bit); Set IV can be optional or be used for extra credit these offer challenge problems that go beyond the lesson. Answers to Set II exercises can be found in the back of the student book, which allows the student to self-grade, if you would like.

I have heard great things about this text.<br />-Makes Algebra learning relevant (so the kids can see "why we need algebra anyway"<br />-does away with the endless practice problems that bore students <br />-begins every lesson with something to open the student's interest.

Love it!
We have struggled for years to find a good fit for math and we finally found it with Jacobs! My daughter enjoys the cartoon and story intros to each lesson and has a higher level of understanding of the teaching than she has with any other math curriculum. We will definitely be continuing with the Jacobs series.

old version is better
there are missing problems at the end of the chapters that is in the older version of the book. You must buy the teacher's edition to get those problems.

Jacobs Algebra offers clear concise instructions and explanations in both the student text and teacher's manual I was impressed with the many visuals and practical applications as well as the multifaceted explanations throughout the coursework My son and I also enjoyed the interesting anecdotes and cartoons within the lessons and he especially enjoyed the challenge of each of the Set IV problems at the end of each lesson In a recent comparison to a public school friend's course and text Jacobs truly offers an excellent study of algebra; we are looking forward to Jacob's geometry!

I used this text to teach Algebra to my daughter and 8 other students when they were in 5th grade Not all of the students chose to continue when it got hard but all of them really enjoyed the way the material is presented and explained The problem sets build up gradually from walking the student through solving the problems to doing them independently I highly recommend using this text to teach Algebra to anyone but particularly younger students and anyone who has struggled with the subject in the pastThe author shows diagrams to develop many of the lessons so it is already friendly to visual learners but I used many hands-on materials along with it I highly recommend using Algebra Models with this or any other text

This textbook was incredible! One of the homeschool moms in our church gave this to us several years ago I was curious about it so I started reading the first lesson and I was amazed at how SIMPLE algebra can be! I would use this for clarification when studying my Saxon Algebra I text in my 8th grade year I especially appreciate the non-intimidating layout of the pages (ie set 1 problems set 2 etc) and the more challenging exercises in Set 4 I highly recommend this book!

I am on my fourth child doing algebra and it has not been easy for any of them! Being a poor algebra student myself has not helped We have finally found in Jacob's Elementary Algebra a program that actually gives enough instruction that they understand it I rarely need to assist as it is written clearly for the student I highly recommend this for anyone who struggles with algebra

My "twice exceptional" (gifted/talented & learning disabled)(read: visual learner) 7th grader struggled with the school district's Saxon -- she found the repetition excessive and stifling We switched to Jacobs Algebra this year (she was not scheduled for Algebra for two more years) and she loves it The text is clear and engaging -- I do nothing but answer the occasional question and grade her work I have her do the Set 2 problems only; she does Set 3 if she needs extra practice I haven't needed the teacher's manual except for those few occasions (answers for Set 3) For kids who understand concepts quickly and don't need lots of repetition I would particularly recommend Jacobs
