Product Description:

A simple yet charming story to help young children understand their geographical place in this world. Colorful, detailed illustrations make it fun to follow along with a little girl using maps to take a journey which starts at her bedroom and gradually widens to include her house, town, state, country, and the world. I especially like the fun and easy activity suggestions, such as mapping your own house or making homemade postcards, which are included with this Reading Rainbow™ selection. ~ Anh

I want to introduce my kids to geography and map skills. This book gets excellent reviews on Amazon, but Rainbow Resource has a better price!

We love this book It's presented in story form and it's very easy to read even to my 5-year-old She was fascinated! We live in Canada so I had to explain some of the differences and similarities between states and provinces but otherwise everything "translates" pretty well I supplemented this with a very basic children's atlas (ordered at the same time from Rainbow!) We continued the learning from this book by creating our own "me on the map" book I typed the text of the book into Word to create our own book where my daughter could draw her own "maps" of her room our house our street country and globe What a great springboard for discussion and learning - and one I'd probably never have found at the library because it's not Canadian!

This book was wonderful for helping my daughter (K5) understand what maps represent It demonstrated that maps are symbolic pictures represent actual localities have different scales and are used to locate things (and people) It starts with a girl drawing a map of herself in her room and then places that room in a map of her house and continues to expand to street town state country and world It then contracts back down sequentially to the map of the girl in her room The language is simple enough to understand (doesn't introduce map terms) and could be read by a second grader or even younger with a little help with words like "countries" The pictures are appealing colored pencil drawings This is a great introduction to maps as representations of place (it will not teach map making or reading skills) I thought it was better at showing this concept of a map than "As the Crow Flies " by Hartman (which is recommended often) A great follow-up book that holds interest and introduces some terms and map-reading skills is "The Once Upon a Time Map Book " by Hennessy
