I'm hoping it will work for my 14 year old daughter who never got very far with typing games.

I have used this book before. I work with middle schoolers and think it provides a straight forward, effective way for them to learn keyboarding. This is a valuable skill, especially for those who struggle to read and write; it frees up brain power for the task of writing that would otherwise be used for "hunting and pecking."

I wanted an "old-fashioned" way to teach my son keyboarding.

I realized recently that my middle school son hasn't learned any keyboarding skills yet, so I bought this to hopefully give us some guidance on how to start.

I wanted to try this as opposed to typing instructor for Kids.

We tried a computer based keyboarding program and the timing was very frustrating for my son. So, I decided to give this a try and just have him learn the correct formation at his own pace. Speed is not an issue with me but correct formation is important. Speed will come in time.

Is this a one semester course?
julie on May 26, 2023
BEST ANSWER: This is what I remember from high school in the late 80’s and I did receive a credit. These days the kids take a computer science course in high school, but I have used it for my son at 6th and 7th grade so he isn’t stuck being a key poker. This book is divided into 92 parts which would suggest a high school semester. However, there are no assessments and it is not written as many of my homeschool packages are. It is just meant for anyone who wants to learn typing the ‘old way’. I’d say it is essential. My older two kids learned by playing typing games in elementary school and those don’t get the job done quite like this. Enthusiastically recommend.
Is this a spiral-bound book?
A shopper on Apr 22, 2022
BEST ANSWER: It is spiral on top, and has cardboard “page” that unfolds into a standing base, so that the book stands upright, and you flip the page over the top, rather than using a document holder. Very convenient.
Does this book stand up on its own when you are using it?
A shopper on Mar 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I've never used this part so I can't say how well it works. It is not the usual sturdy cardboard triangle you find on many books. It is a perforated cardboard page that is punched out and then connected together. Hope this helps!

Simple, but Smart program-Highly Recommend
I am so impressed with the well thought-out methodology of this book. I am using this to teach 2 boys 7 and 9 years old. They love it and are moving though the book at a much faster pace than I anticipated. The keys are introduced in order of the alphabet which differs from most programs, but is highly effective. The author recommends saying the letter as you type to reinforce muscle memory and from what I am observing this is working for 2 very different types of learners. I know there are many online programs available, but many have too much distractions and silliness that are so counterproductive. This book can be paced according to the needs and motivation of the child. Another bonus is the words to type are listed by word families so it works well as phonics and spelling review along with keyboarding skills. I am so pleased to have discovered Ms. King's writing books and this keyboarding book really has a lot more going on than at first glance. I love the simple layout and helpful tips. It's not fussy, but very logical. Also, the book is bound at the top and has a stiff back which folds into a stand so it can be propped up alongside a keyboard (or even a typewriter as we are using for added screen-free fun and fine motor dexterity!) Highly recommend to homeschoolers or as a supplement for traditional students. I also think it would be perfectly effective for older kids and even adults who want to learn to type efficiently.

My son is almost done with the book and hus typing has greatly improved. II prefer this over the online games which left my son holding his hands improperly and "cheating" to win the game.
