Category Description for Handwriting Without Tears:

Providing a tactile, hands-on approach to handwriting, this approach works well for many types of students.

It is particularly helpful for children who are left-handed children or those who need a more interactive approach to learning. Children who struggle with motor skills or experience cognitive difficulties will also reap great benefits from this program. Unique to this program, practice pages use a two-horizontal-line format rather than the three-horizontal-line format typically found in writing programs, cursive has no slant and letters are formed using a very simple single-stroke, and it uses a multisensory approach to teach. Teaching and practice sessions are short (10-15 minutes), without a lot of meaningless busy work.

Each level of Handwriting without Tears consists of a workbook and teacher guide.

Consumable Student workbooks have horizontal pages in Kindergarten through Grade 2. Grade 3 and up offers vertical pages. Workbooks may be used separately, although at the early levels parents of struggling writers may find the Teacher Guides extremely valuable.

Newly revised in 2018, the Teacher Guides provide additional teaching instruction and support, while the Student Books provide more writing practice for each lesson. While some of the content is the same from the 2013 version, the expanded content means the two editions are not compatible without considerable parental/teacher modification (depending on lesson and level). Please note, the Spanish Student Books are also now updated to 2018 editions. There are currently no Spanish Teacher Guides available. English Teacher Guides provide the overall teaching philosophy, techniques and applicable multi-sensory activities, but do not provide the daily lesson plans.

Teacher Guides include:

  • an overview of the program
  • handwriting instruction
  • the stages of learning and scope and sequence
  • teaching guidelines
  • weekly and daily schedules for each unit
  • instructions on proper posture
  • paper and pencil skills

Following these helpful "how to" sections are lessons corresponding to each page in the student book. Each lesson includes a reduced student page, lesson objective and introduction, lesson plans and enrichment, ELL (English Language Learner) support and Cross Curricular suggestions. The back of each teacher guide includes multisensory activities suggestions, remediation tips, additional strategies for English Language Learners and Children with Special Needs, handwriting standards, references and index. Inside the back cover is a letter formation template for that grade level.

Please note, many of the online interactive resources require an additional purchase and appear to be limited to schools. There is a 30-day trial of the publishers HITT (Handwriting Interactive Teaching Tools) with purchase of the Teacher Guide. While this online support may be helpful, it is certainly not necessary to use this excellent program effectively. Suggested manipulatives are listed with the recommended grade level and the grade level Teacher Guide effectively explains the manipulatives. sc. ~ Deanne

I got this book to have on hand for when my son is ready for the next book. He has been exposed to cursive but hasn't caught on yet. I am hoping taking it slower through HWT will help him catch on and grow in handwriting.

HWoT has been great for my kids-- it's gentle but consistent, and it doesn't overwhelm them with too much practice-- just the right amount.

Do you need the teacher's guide?
User on May 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I didn’t use it with my third grader. We had been using HWOT the whole way and didn’t need it for this, she just followed the example strokes.
What's the difference between Cursive Handwriting and Cursive Success?

Cursive Handwriting Student Workbook
Cursive Success Student Workbook
Cursive Success Student Workbook
BEST ANSWER: The cursive handwriting book is considered 3rd grade or the first book of cursive. It introduces cursive slowly. Where the cursive success book is considered 4th grade or the second book of cursive. It re-introduces cursive letters and moves a little more quickly through the letters and has more words and sentences than the cursive handwriting book.

Great tool
This book has been a wonderful way for my 3rd grader to learn cursive. It is not overwhelming and the skills build on each other bit by bit. He was so excited when he wrote his first cursive word, dad! I highly recommend this book!

Good solid handwriting book.
I've been very impressed with this handwriting book. I was looking for something for my dyslexic 12 yr. old. I feel like this one isn't too babyish. He knew the letters but needed help practicing how to connect them to form words. This fit the bill.

Great for emotionally charged perfectionists!
I’d recommend it! My daughter cries easily when frustrated. This book has been smooth sailing. She can do it in her own, and is so proud of her lovely handwriting! The only downside is the unexciting cover, but the lessons are great.

Handwriting Without Tears
We have always used the Handwriting Without Tears (12 years of homeschooling!). It's easy and to the point. Even my son who has some fine motor skills problems likes it. We did delay his learning cursive a couple years, but now he is whizzing through the book!

We love HWT!
My oldest has done every level of HWT, and it's the one book I know I will buy every year when I get curriculum. The teaching method is solid, and there's plenty of practice in the workbook alone. The copywork passages are typically rules of grammar, so this can also double as a Language Arts suppliment in that regard. It's B&W, so if your student likes to color, there's plenty to add color to in these books.

The cursive style is simplified, so it's not as fancy as other programs, but it's still a nice, basic cursive style for kids to learn.
