Category Description for Violin Book Series:

This self-instructional series is the product of 30 years of research and experience by Eden Vaning-Rosen, violin teacher and concert violinist. The program takes a meticulous, step-by-step approach to learning to play the violin. Not only will you learn proper technique and how to read music, you'll also find out how to care for the violin, how to read music while simultaneously following a conductor, about the history of music, and much, much more. This series consists of different level books that build on one another. Each spiral-bound book, which can be read by parents to younger students, includes big print, simple instructions, and great diagrams and illustrations. Skills mastery for each level is assessed by using the Check Sheet included with each book. The goal is to earn a rating of 5 (out of 1 to 5) for each skill listed by practicing that skill diligently. Some books also have accompanying Practice & Performance CDs, whose track numbers are correlated with specific skills and page numbers on the Check Sheet. Though the CDs are not required, the musical accompaniment provides exposure to music and enhances practice exercises. A metronome is required for Book 3 and higher. This series is aimed towards younger students, but it should work just as well for older children and even adults. I found one book (see Book 4a/5a) that provided a time frame for completion, but it seems for the most part that each student should work at his own pace. Please note that left- and right-handed students play the same way as both hands are equally involved. ~ Anh
