Product Description:

The full-color decodable storybooks cover all 36 steps to independent reading and provide great practice for the student to develop his new reading ability.

A long-time favorite, this excellent phonics program appeals to both the child and the teacher because of its enjoyment, ease of use, and effectiveness. The instructor's manual provides easy-to-follow directions and gives you the confidence to teach phonics. Consumable workbooks for the student not only include phonics practice and reading comprehension but also handwriting, spelling, grammar, and creative writing. Children love the catchy songs teaching letter sounds, long and short vowel sounds, blending vowels and consonants, and digraphs.

At Level 1, language arts skills are covered through a "raceway" theme with 36 steps to independent reading. The full-color decodable storybooks cover all 36 steps and provide great practice for the student to develop his new reading ability. Playing the games is another fun reinforcement activity to ensure real understanding of the phonetic skills. The two workbooks include grammar and creative writing as well as letter recognition, sequencing, phonemic awareness, phonics practice, manuscript writing, reading, comprehension and spelling.

Category Description for Sing, Spell, Read & Write:

The Sing, Spell, Read and Write curriculum kits are currently out of print. The author, Sue Dickson, may reprint these programs in the future, but they are not currently available. Several of the workbooks have been reprinted and are available separately.

Considering the approach, ease of use, content, child-appeal, benefits, effectiveness and cost of all the phonics programs we were familiar with, Sing, Spell, Read & Write was our choice for personal use. We have used several programs and read about many others. Although we didn't use this program in total with our children (because we extended the spelling, used italic handwriting instead of ball and stick, etc.) we did find it the most used and useful of those we tried. AND the results were wonderful! If you're looking for something to really lay it all out for you, something that works, is easy to use, and will have your child singing the letter sounds in days, followed closely by actually reading... this is what we recommend! Here are some of our reasons:

  • The "raceway" theme is very appealing and motivating to children, who love tracking their success via race car around a track as they complete the 36 steps to independent reading.
  • The songs are contagious - children will sing and sing and learn their letter sounds, long and short vowel sounds, blending vowels and consonants, and digraphs almost effortlessly - and enjoy it! That is, if you can bear to listen to it sung over and over, multiplied by x times the number of children using it throughout the years.
  • The 17 phonetic, full-color storybooks cover all 36 steps, providing immediate, rewarding reinforcement for the decoding skill just learned. This makes good sense.
  • The games are not just fluff, but real fortification of phonetic skills. They are more fun, however, if you can play with more than one child.
  • The step-by-step instructor's manual provides easy-to-follow directions for all lessons. It will aid you in understanding/teaching the phonics program - and give you the confidence to do it!
  • Included is a complete, phonetic spelling program dove-tailing with the phonetic constructs being learned and a complete handwriting program (if you use ball and stick manuscript).
  • Two workbooks include grammar and creative writing as well as letter recognition, sequencing, phonemic awareness, phonics practice, manuscript writing, reading, comprehension and spelling.
  • phonics songs are now all featured on CD
  • The two workbooks and the assessment book included in the set are the only consumables in the program. These are also available separately if you are teaching additional students.

To be honest, we have just a few quibbles:

  • Some of the audios are not as clear or distinct as a perfectionist might demand. Some may go a little too "fast" for your taste - notably the Ferris wheel song used to practice blending sounds smoothly. For us, this was a plus, since we kept at it until we could keep up with the song, resulting in perfect blending!
  • The prizes have been eliminated from the program (although the empty Treasure Chest is still included). However, as we always thought these were cheesy, we have traditionally included a bag of 36 prizes from our own Incentive Box (a $20 value!) free with Level 1 Kits or Kindergarten/Level 1 Combo Kits. This free incentive bag will continue to be included although they have dropped their prizes.

I taught four homeschooled children to read using these books two decades ago, and now I am using them to teach my kindergarteners to read with them. I am buying two more sets for my kindergartener team teachers.

My daughters teacher was homeschooled and she swore by these books. She had brought the first one "a" to school for my daughter who is 5 and she could read the whole book when I picked her up. I was amazed. Makes it really easy for them to sound it out and figure it out for themselves.

I am a veteran homeschooler and starting on my next generation of children in my family plus I run a tutoring business. I have found the music and phonetic readers from Sing Spell Read and Write to be unparalleled for children to proficiently learn to read. These are highly recommended.

we are using them with an ESL/ literacy program for ladies and also for children. It is an excellent product and we need more.

Have used this product in the past and given it to my daughter, who resides elsewhere. Now I need another set for tutoring. As a teacher of 20 years, this is by far the most kid friendly set of phonics readers I have employed.

used with my children, now using with grandchildren, tried Bobs books and like these better

I used Sing, Spell, Read, and Write with my son. He learned to read easily and quickly. He loved the songs and the books were easily readable along with what he was learning. Now my grandson is learning to read. He knows letters and their sounds, but very few library or classroom books are available at the beginning reading level. I think these will be at his reading level and still hold his interest.

Had these books in the 90's, used them through 2005 to teach five kids reading. They all loved them and learned easily. Best reading curriculum ever.

My first grader needed more practice reading at home. His teacher is already using the same set of books in her classroom.

I used these when I was a child and the way they teach the phonics is great! I am now using them with my first grade students.

Cheaper materials quality, politically correct editing, still a great method
We owned the original set for many long years. It was heavy, solidly made paper covers with hefty paper pages that could withstand being handled.
This newer set is a disappointment in two ways: cheaper construction and politically correct editing.

The covers are a thin, glossy, easily bent/folded paper, and the pages are hair-thin. One book tore apart 2" long at the binding on the very first day we used it.

Otherwise, the phonics method is still used reliably here - and is a very good method.

My kids enjoy the stories. Only the older kids noticed the editing for politically sensitive issues, which I probably shouldn't point out here.
