Category Description for Uncle Sam and You (Gr. 5-8):

Families who have home-educated through the high school years have been greatly blessed by the efforts of the Notgrass family in providing quality, Bible Based history curriculum options. With the core belief that God is actively involved in our nation's history and future, students in middle school have the same opportunity to learn of our nation's great Christian heritage. With a vision to equip students with knowledge and inspiration, this curriculum provides children with a solid understanding of the core values and beliefs that made our nation great. President Ronald Reagan eloquently stated, "If we ever forget we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under", and the authors are passionate about helping children never forget this point.

The hardcover student text, Uncle Sam and You, is divided into two parts (each part is sold separately). Each part contains 15 units and 75 lessons. Part One introduces the American system of government, elections, the Presidency and Congress. Part Two covers the military and emergency workers, state and local government, the judicial system and the government oversight of transportation, tourism, technology, communication and more. Each lesson contains approximately six pages to be read daily. Each part also contains lessons on fifteen American patriotic holidays. These holiday studies are designed to provide historical background and context along with activities to complete as a family.

Each lesson incorporates a variety of activities, including: thinking biblically assignments, creative writing, vocabulary assignments, short research activities, art activities (draw a picture or take a photograph), reading assignments (Citizen's Handbookor from the selection of recommended literature

We've used many social studies curriculum programs over our many years of homeschooling, but Notgrass has become our very favorite. We love the way the lessons are laid out and the rich scriptural foundation. The pages are full of colorful pictures, the literature selections are perfectly suited, and the review books help cement what students have learned from the textbook.

I chose this curriculum because it is designed for students in grades 5-8. I believe this is a great age group to teach American Government to. This year is also an election year and I want my child to understand the election process, what presidents do, and how local governments work. This curriculum also teaches about major American holidays.

I've heard great things about Notgrass. This is our year to incorporate it and fill in a gap they have in their education: Civics!

The lessons look more engaging than our previous history. I think the colorful pages are going to keep my daughter's interest (and mine). It seems like a thorough curriculum and we are looking forward to trying it out this year.

Because it is an election year, I wanted to explore government in detail. My 10th grade student used Notgrass material last year for World History, and we were so happy with it I decided to try the Uncle Sam and You with my middle schoolers this year.

We used America the Beautiful for 6th grade and really enjoyed it. My son liked being able to be his own teacher.

My student enjoyed America the Beautiful but did become bored with this program because of the whole year of US Government. But we do plan on continuing to the next book in the series.

Is there only one student workbook? Does the student workbook contain its own answer key? is the answer key sold in the kit related to questions from the book? How is the Citizen's Handbook used?

BEST ANSWER: The Student workbook and lesson review are slightly different. The Student Workbook has fun review activities like crossword puzzles and mazes that cover each lesson. The Lesson Review book has questions and spaces for written answers for each lesson. I would get one or the other, there is no need for both. They both contain the same unit tests at the back. The Uncle Sam and You Answer Key book has the answers for both. You do not really need the Citizen's Handbook. At the end of the lessons it lists out possible homework you can choose for your child to do. Some of the lessons refer to The Citizen's Handbook. It contains stories, biographies and other literature that applies to the lesson. My student did not really enjoy it so we ended up not using it much. I do love the Notgrass curriculums. They are all set up the same way. I have used them for two years and will continue to use them. I have learned so much from their curriculum and I enjoy sitting down and reading the textbooks with my sons.

1sts year using
This is our 9th year homeschooling but our first year using Notgrass. I switched specifically because it is/was an election year and I wanted my kids to understand the process and what was happening. This program has been so helpful. The information is easy to understand. We plan to continue with Notgrass through high school based on this year's experience.

So far, so good
Today is our first day using it, and so far we liked Unit One. It's well-written and easy to use. We appreciate the biblical/spiritual focus as a context for understanding how to be citizens.

Love Notgrass History!
It's can be challenging choosing curriculum for each subject. So thankful for Uncle Sam and You and America the Beautiful. It's so well rounded. It's not just answer- the -questions at the end. The assignments are laid out so well and allows them to do the lessons on their own. We love it! I think this can be for the child that loves or hates history. As I experience that but the well rounded activities livens it up. Lori
