Category Description for Getty-Dubay Italic Handwriting:

Mom's horrible handwriting inspired us to use an italic handwriting program with our kids. It's difficult not to produce at least legible writing in Italics. Another plus is that manuscript flows into cursive - letters don't completely change, they just join. Not only does this seem sensible to us, but the many compliments the children have received on their handwriting have further encouraged us in this approach. (Children begin moving into cursive writing in Level C.) The last level gets into calligraphy toward the end. From there, follow up with a good calligraphy book for Jr. High/High School and continue handwriting as an art form! Instruction Manual applies to all levels.

These materials are specifically graded and include both instruction and practice.

I homeschooled all four of my children and used this method to teach their handwriting. Now, with Covid, I am homeschooling my grandchildren. I was happy to find the books were still available.

I used this curriculum growing up. It was simple and fun. The transition from print to cursive was logical and flowed well. There are no extraneous loops or swirls. I have had many compliments over the years on the legibility of my writing, even when I am writing fast and sloppily (for me).
Stephanie J on Aug 8, 2020
My son, who has beautiful penmanship, wants the challenge of italics. Purchased this along with Book D for a complete of year of instruction.

We've been using this method and we love it. Both our kids have beautiful and readable handwriting thanks to this.
Yoshimi H on Jun 8, 2020
Going to try my upper elementary son on this handwriting curriculum. Cursive never stuck with his older brothers and so maybe we'll just do this instead of having to do remedial work later!
Elizabeth L on Apr 27, 2020
I have 4 children working in Getty Dubay Italic workbooks at different levels right now. They like the format, and I like the independence it gives them! My oldest, who also learned Italic and is out of highschool, receives compliments on her handwriting.

Italic handwriting becomes cursive so easily!
Melanie M on Aug 9, 2019
My son doesn't enjoy handwriting practice, and I'd like to see if the italic style helps his writing flow. I also like that this book transitions to cursive.

We've used these with 4 kids for years, need new one for this school year. Bought from you because its best price I've found and I was already getting other things from you so it's easier!
Nicola R F on Aug 5, 2019
Love this method of handwriting.
Amy G on Jun 11, 2019
My homeschooled girls each worked through several of these books, several times. Each kid would do one page a day, and would then start over in a new book--often the same one, when she wasn't ready yet to move on to a more advanced one. Build that muscle memory! Both of my daughters are now in college, and receive regular compliments on how nice their handwriting is. And I purchase copies for my schooled nieces and nephews who are struggling with the fine motor skills of handwriting."

Alicia C on Mar 13, 2018
It's a beautiful handwriting curriculum and my children's penmanship has improved immensely. It's easy and stress-free!
AILEEN P on Feb 23, 2018
Italic handwriting is a beautiful way to print. I find the best way for my children to work on their skills is to set a timer for 10-20 minutes, instead of assigning a page or a part of a page.
Yvette H on Feb 11, 2018
This was recommended by my Charlotte Mason community
Kelly B on Jan 16, 2018
For my children to improve their handwriting. They both print and do not want to write in cursive, so even though they are older, I ordered this as the books meant for older children focus on cursive. It would be great if there was a book that allowed for print practice in smaller letter sizes for older students who want to print and not write in cursive.
Betsy L on Oct 6, 2017
Getty Dubay is an excellent option for people teaching children handwriting skills that flows easily into clear cursive Italic. We are excited to move onto the next book!
Catherine A on Sep 13, 2017
Child finished book B so this is the next book. LOVE Getty and Dubay.

are the instructional manuals for Getty and Dubay handwriting book required?
A shopper on May 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It depends on how you want to use the curriculum. The letter formation is shown in the student workbooks, so you could just use the workbooks. But the instruction manual (there’s only one, and it’s for all levels) explains a simple system of teaching handwriting and how to mark students writing to indicate need for correction or practice or to highlight especially good letter formation. I found the manual inexpensively, and it was helpful to have.

Great Product!
These books present a simple handwriting style that is easy to learn, even for my children who struggle with coordination issues. I can see a difference after just a few weeks in their other writing assignments as well.

My daughter is a visual learner and I had heard that Italic handwriting may be easier for her Boy were they right! Her handwriting has improved while using this book and each page has numbered lines so I can easily only assign 2 or more lines so she doesn't get tired of writing One of the things I really like about the book as well is that at the bottom of many of the pages it has the student evaluate their own work Also the teacher's edition is very well done and gives pointers for all of the levels - so you don't have to buy a new teacher's book each year
