Category Description for Applications of Grammar:

As the title implies, the emphasis is on applying grammar rules to writing. The program stresses correct sentence structure, sentence diagramming, and good paragraph formation. As with all Christian Liberty Press books, this series is God-honoring as well. All grammar books cover pretty much the same material, so what stands out about this series? First of all, the biblical content. In addition, a student could learn a great deal of history just by reading the excerpts of various literary works used as examples. Each lesson begins with a clear explanation of a topic and gives examples to drive home the point. Tables are used to demonstrate concepts like person, tense, and voice. Exercises have an adequate but not excessive amount of practice for each skill. Later sections of the book focus on word usage and more advanced literary concepts. Students then use these skills in writing paragraphs, short stories or newspaper articles.

Questionable Grammar
Typically grammar books give the hard and fast rules which are never wrong. This one introduces the potential exceptions that are subjective in nature. While I can find these exceptions in style books, I don't believe the belong in a high school grammar text. Teaching grammar is teaching cooking. Students learn to follow the recipe first before you allow them start experimenting with the ingredients. Here's an example from Lesson 39: "If the independent clauses are short, the comma before the conjunction may be omitted." Example: "Joni thanked the clerk but he did not respond in kind." I can't lie; that makes me a little crazy. Exceptions to rules should be rare and should serve a clear functional purpose. I can see no functional purpose for making an exception for that sentence. I'm giving the book 4 stars, because they aren't technically wrong but if you are still trying to give your student a strong foundation in grammar, this book will confuse them. (It may have something to do with one of the author's being a journalist. In journalism, one follows a slightly different style guide than in formal writing. For example, the APA style guide doesn't require the oxford comma, but I certainly do when I teach my essay-writing class.)
