Category Description for Reading Detective:

I waited awhile for this product! Critical Thinking Press has tackled reading comprehension and critical thinking in this popular series. Reading and thinking should go hand in hand, but sometimes those skills need to be developed a little more. These excellent books use excerpts from award-winning authors, original fiction in a variety of genres and an assortment of nonfiction articles covering a broad array of topics and subject areas. Reading skills honed in the series include: comparison/contrast; distinguishing cause and effect; distinguishing fact and opinion; drawing conclusions; finding supporting details; identifying main idea; making inferences; making generalizations; making predictions; reading for details and information; sequencing; using tables, diagrams, and illustrations; recognizing analogies; predicting outcomes. Literary analysis is included here, too, as students will: analyze character traits; identify key events in plot; identify theme; identify setting; predict resolution; identify author's purpose; recognize figurative language; recognize conflict; recognize point of view; and sequence events. While all skills are developed, particular attention is given to those requiring critical thinking, such as inference and generalization. The goal is to teach students to think as they read to increase their understanding and retention of the material. To that end, instead of just answering questions about each reading passage, students are asked to support their choice, citing specific evidence from the passage (hence the "detective" part). Pre- and post-tests are supplied to help you determine which skills and lessons to focus on. Student books are consumable worktexts. A Teacher Overview contains an introduction to the program and how to use it, as well as answers to the practice activities. The answer key contains answers to the exercises in context; all of the passages and questions are included to aid in discussion. Beginning, A1, and B1 levels are all very similar in structure and content, but adjusted to different grade levels. Reading Detective Rx features low-readability, high-interest passages and exercises for the remedial reader.

Besides the interesting, varied selections, broad range of skills covered, and development of critical thinking skills, I also appreciate that the reading level is on target for the grade level (except for Rx). Many reading comprehension books seem to go to extremes to ensure that difficulty in actual reading ability doesn't impede the student in working through the lessons by lowering the reading level of the passages - resulting in overly simplistic passages that take most of the interest (and challenge!) out of reading.

Reading comp. isn't a subject we usually dedicate a lot of time to. The kids usually comprehend very well because they read a ton. This kiddo, though, needs some structured work in this area. I like the looks of the Reading Detective because it requires the child to think about the answer, and asks the child to give the number of the sentence that proves his answer is correct.

I purchased Reading Detective in order to work on my child's reading comprehension I wanted her to increase her ability to analyze what she read not just be able to recall facts Reading Detective was all I had hoped for The reading selections truly covered all aspects of comprehension such as sequencing grasping the main idea cause and effect figurative language and drawing conclusions from what is read Often the student was asked which sentences or paragraphs best supported his answer The answer key conveniently located in the back of the book explained just why certain answers were right and others were wrong Because of this in depth answer key we were able to discuss how my daughter was thinking when she answered a question wrong and how her answer might be acceptable too All the selections were interesting short enough and with just the right size type (easy on the eyes) The ten literature excerpts were taken from some of my favorite books such as Fudge a Mania Mr Popper's Penguins and Owls in the Family There are 50 selections in all including a section of nonfiction articles The nonfiction articles were invaluable It is much harder to thoroughly comprehend an article on geometry than it is a fiction selection Comprehension of nonfiction is essential for doing school work Reading Detective was extremely easy to use All I had to do was photocopy the pages and grade the work Sometimes I didn't do that either I told my daughter to use the book but to write her answers on notebook paper Sometimes I let her grade the work too I like the fact that Reading Detective is not labeled with a specific grade level I was able to use it for several years (there are 50 selections!) without having my daughter see a grade level on the cover and say "I am past that grade now!" This product is a great value because you can photocopy it and use it for all your kids To me it was worth using with one child You do not have to purchase (and worry about losing) a separate answer key since it is included Actually I have not seen any other products quite like Reading Detective The other reading comprehension books seem to have grade levels be timed and ask simply factual questions (Progeny Press asks thought provoking questions but it produces literature guides for individual books This is the only product I know of that teaches in depth comprehension through short articles) Reading Detective does not ask the student to time himself This is a very positive aspect for a student who is a slow reader and needs encouragement As my daughter got older sometimes I asked her to use the chronometer to count UP how long it took her to read the selection and answer the questions That approach worked well for us
