Category Description for Draw-Write-Now:

These are unusual books, combining art instruction with handwriting practice, and incorporating more than a little history and science instruction along the way. Based on a successful formula created by a now 75-year-old former teacher to inspire her students, these inviting books might become your child's favorite part of the school day! They are non-consumable, as your child will do the actual art work and writing on separate paper. Each book is divided into three themes (see below) with a total of 21 lessons. In the spirit of Drawing with Children, most of the lessons begin with seeing the targeted objects as basic shapes and lines. In each lesson, a colorful picture shows the author's model artwork, with neatly penned text on ruled lines underneath. Step-by-step drawing instruction for the main object in the picture is contained on the facing page. Usually, this begins with basic shape(s), then details are added a little at a time. After you introduce the subject of the lesson, your child follows these directions (with help, if needed) to reproduce the subject. Then, a similar or original background and details are added to the student's picture. After this is done, the accompanying text is copied. (Although text is shown in manuscript, you might want to have older children practice cursive.) Text is informational and in short sentences; the author believes this is more motivational and useful than forming isolated letters. It seems to me that, after carefully creating such beautiful artwork, children will be very careful to use their neatest and best writing underneath! After the handwriting is finished, your child can color the picture with crayons, colored pencils, or felt tips. Additional lesson-specific drawing tips and suggestions are offered in a Teaching Tips section at the end of the book. Some additional ideas and help for increasing art awareness or new techniques are also found at the end of each themed unit. Each lesson includes a related question to promote thinking and discussion. Answers to each are also provided at the end of each unit, along with a suggested book to read that will expand on the topic. If you incorporate this literature, each theme could become a complete unit study! We would recommend using Blank Top writing paper or My Illustrated Story Journals (the latter would be perfect if you plan to extend your study and need more writing space, since each journal could contain 12 lessons with an additional lined page for recording more information).

A homeschooling friend recommended these for my 4 1/2 year-old who is writing all on her own. They have good reviews, so we're trying a few.

I chose this because my 7 year old doesn't enjoy writing practice but does love to draw and make his own "books". He may even forget he's doing penmanship!

My son loves to draw and I heard this was a great supplementary curriculum, however, I also know that my son changes his mind like the wind so I thought I would try out the first book and see how it goes.

A wonderful beginning drawing book!
My 4 year old daughter loves this book. Her drawing skills have really improved over the month that she has been using this book. Although it is intended for handwriting, I purchased it so she could practice pencil control. Even though she cannot write the sentences (she does label her drawings), she can follow the easy steps to draw the animals and people.

My daughter
(5) Hates handwriting but loves art. Having her write the sentences to be able to draw the picture was great incentive!

Love it!!
My children ages 4 and 6 (girls) absolutely love doing these lessons together. I write what is on the book on our board in cursive my 6 ur old can copy it. They get extremely excited when they see me pull the book out. My 6 yr old has drawn a few of the lessons by herself. It is that simple. We love it!!

I have used these books for three years My children love to learn to draw the different scenes and I love that they practice neat handwriting I also think it is wonderful that even my least artistic children can draw and make their picture look like the pictures in the book somewhat We love researching each topic and the bonus question added to each entry is always a fun one to guess atwe are seldom correct!

I loved these books! Why? They didnt look anything like handwriting books! They looked fun and anything that can make boys or just reluctant writers want to write is an awesome resource!! My kids also enjoyed picking from the various topics or themes that are individualized in each books Plus combining the drawing lesson with the copy work I believe is a great way to refine motor skills and open them up to their own creativity

Book 1 of this series has set my 6-year-old daughter free! She loved to draw before but this book has given her some of the techniques and discipline to create really nice pictures that she can be proud ofI have to admit I was really leery of "how-to-draw" books in general I've avoided them for years thinking they'd stifle the kids' creativity Now I see the truth: by showing kids how to break real objects down into basic shapes and simple steps you are actually *facilitating* their own creative process unlocking a world of artBy the way I have always been ashamed of the fact that I can't draw worth beans Turns out I was just never taught how This book has been a great beginning for BOTH of us(ps We don't do the writing yet but I plan to start Right now I just have her write the name of the animal)
