Product Description:
Suggested for use with several major curriculums, this is a thick, delightful compilation of a wide variety of poetry. While the Random House Book of Poetry above is directed more toward children both in format and poetic selections, Favorite Poems is more of a read-aloud-from or teaching resource. Here are most of the poems you'd ever want to share or study with your children. Older children with an appreciation of poetry will also enjoy it.
We are pleased to be able to distribute BJU Press curriculum to our customers. Most homeschoolers are already familiar with their materials. For those who are not, BJU is a Christian university located in South Carolina that produces and markets curriculum materials for Christian schools as well as home schools. Probably the most homeschool-friendly full-curriculum supplier, they have not only accommodated homeschoolers, but have continually worked to make their materials better suited to the homeschooling family. Many of their courses now contain manuals written specifically for the home school setting, and visuals and supplemental materials have been "pared down" from the bulkier visuals still used in classrooms. While other curriculum suppliers initially frowned on distributing teacher materials to homeschoolers, and provided only expensive classroom versions, Bob Jones quickly embraced homeschoolers, readily allowing them access to teacher's editions and, eventually, producing less expensive spiral-bound or paperbound versions to save money for homeschooling families. Their materials are all top quality. They are professionally prepared, educationally sound, and Biblically-based. Used in Christian school classrooms across the country for years and constantly improved, they are courses you can trust in your homeschool as well. We have long been fans of Bob Jones curriculum materials, having used courses in almost every subject area for one child or another through the years. In our particular situation (seven children, Mom and Dad sharing in teaching as well as in running Rainbow Resource Center), a well-constructed, teacher-ready course can be a God-send. Although we have used a variety of methods and curriculums in our homeschool through the years (and continue to do so), we strongly feel that the Bob Jones materials we have used have helped to produce excellent, college-ready students. Unless you have a particularly strong aversion to textbooks of any kind, at any level, we highly recommend these materials to you.
Curriculum can be found by subject area in our catalog; see index for page numbers. A free scope and sequence is available below, with specific information by grade level.
Recently revised with new format teacher's edition. Instead of a contained novel study (as in the older edition), there are several BookLinks lesson guides meant to be used with selected Journey books. While listed as support materials, I would recommend the use of these (or other study guides) for the experience of reading and studying a full-length work in Reading 2. Teaching Visuals Flip Charts are used for the skill lessons to facilitate review of phonics and other skills. Service Word Cards contain 108 most-needed irregular words that students must master by sight. These two tools are integral parts of the program.
The Home Study Kit includes Teacher's Edition (2 vols.), If Skies Be Blue Student Text, When the Sun Rides High Student Text, Student Worktext, Teaching Visuals Flip Chart, and the Worktext Teacher's Edition.
Providing a comprehensive range of skills, this program transitions from systematic phonics and decoding in the younger grades to reading comprehension in the higher grades. Students learn key strategies for reading comprehension as well as literary terms with a variety of wholesome, engaging stories from all genres including biographies, narrative exposition, historical fiction, Bible stories, and imaginary (fantasy). Biblical principles are taught as students discern what they read through the lens of the Bible. Using phonetic awareness activities to review phonics while developing comprehension in the younger levels, the series steadily progresses to higher order thinking and more challenging literary styles and techniques, including more composition/writing activities by grade 6.
The basal readers are colorful and have an appealing layout with a nice balance of open space and text. There is also a good mix of silent reading for comprehension and oral reading for communication while developing reading proficiency. Close reading strategies help students stay focused on key details while reading. Some levels have opportunities for longer readers with leveled novel studies.
Student worktexts contain practice pages to reinforce new vocabulary words and reading comprehension. A variety of other skills such as map and timeline reading, making a schedule, writing activities, and more are also included in the student worktext. This independent practice reinforces the reading and skills covered in the lessons.
The Teacher Editions contain complete lesson plans, with answered student pages (either full-size or reduced text). Lessons begin with skill development, then teaching, with optional reinforcement activities and discussion questions. Before reading begins, there are also suggestions for story introductions and interactive lessons. Because it is written for classroom instruction, there is a lot of information in the teacher guide; however, use this as a guide to meet the needs of your student. Grades 1-3 Teachers Editions come with a Toolkit CD; Grade 6 includes a DVD. Kits include all needed items: Teacher’s Edition, Student Text, Student Worktext, and Teacher Worktext.
This complete reading program promotes a lifelong love of reading as students develop reading fluency and learn to look for quality literature they can read on their own. Personally, our family has used and enjoyed this program in our homeschools and our daughters use it in their homeschools too!
With this Voyages 3rd edition, students apply a biblical world view to reading strategies (most readings are in student book), comprehension tasks and learn vocabulary in context. Throughout the 180 lessons, teachers model strategies including silent and oral reading and literal and higher-order questions. 20 lessons teach 3 novels (Sarah, Plain & Tall; Medallion, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe--obtain separately) that can be taught at 3 levels of difficulty. Assignments include book reports, tech projects, assessment, and more. Homeschool kits contain text, worktext & answer key, teacher, assessments & answer key.
In this 2015 revision, four Student Texts provide interesting selections from a variety of genres with emphasis on silent reading for comprehension, the development of higher-order thinking, phonics instruction, oral reading, and literary techniques.
The Home School Kit includes the Teacher's Edition (2 vols.), four Student Texts (All God's Creatures, Hearts and Hands, Memories to Keep and Previous Treasures), the Student Worktext, and the Worktext Teacher's Edition.
