Product Description:

Four years after using this book to learn to read at age 4, our twins would still take this book off the shelf and re-read the silly stories that made learning to read immediately rewarding. It is a phonics-based, non-consumable book authored by Siegfried Engelmann using the DISTAR method. Faced with two small children eager to read like their older sisters, but who were not ready for the more intensive writing and spelling drills that accompany most other reading programs, I was at a loss. All they needed at this tender age were enough decoding skills to enable them to read. We had already covered letter sounds (via song), so the twins literally zipped through the early lessons and quickly digested blends, vowel sounds, and digraphs, thoroughly enjoying every lesson. In fact, they begged for "extra" lessons, anxious to get to the next story! The large and bold type of the text material also encouraged them to keep learning because they experienced little eye strain. This volume filled a need in our own family, and judging from the numerous requests/recommendations by our customers, it has done so for others as well.

Recently revised and expanded, this popular phonics program is now even better! While most lessons are essentially unchanged, some lessons have been updated to put a greater emphasis on the pre-reading skills of blending and fluency or reading with expression. Parents will appreciate the revised Practice Guide that offers more background teaching support and teaching strategies. The Practice Guide section concludes with a key exercise checklist for parents to review the vital teaching strategies before applicable lessons. The book concludes with helps to teach additional decoding skills and supplemental materials that includes a Lesson Progress Chart, Template for Sounds-letter writing paper, game ideas, and more. Making a solid, homeschool phonics program easier to teach and more effective, this revised edition of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons will help your child develop important reading skills with the love and support they need.

We have used this to teach each one of our children so far to read. Our original copy finally wore out after five kids, so we are ordering again for number 6. :) A great, systematic approach to teaching reading with stories that are unpredictable and funny for the kids.

To teach my 4 year old to read this summer. I used this curriculum for all 5 of my children, it is very easy and helps them to read small words very quickly. So the children feel accomplished by reading little stories all by themselves.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. My child has a math/science brain and is struggling a bit with reading, specifically with short and long vowel sounds. My friend who has a child that was in a similar position said that this book helped tremendously. I am hoping it can do the same for my child and can unlock the door to a long and wonderful relationship with reading.

is there a work book to go a long with this book?
Adrienne R on Oct 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, there isn't. But one isn't needed. The only material needed besides the book is lined paper or a handwriting book for practicing letter writing. With each lesson, the author assigns a letter or two that has been introduced for handwriting practice. Within the lessons are prompts for the teacher/parent telling exactly what you are to say and ask.
I've used this book for the past 13 years teaching all our children. It's been very easy and successful. The stories are a little goofy, but the technique is great! Really fast results and reading early on in the book.
I highly recommend it.
Good luck!

Best learning tool out there to begin reading
My kids learned how to read quickly with this book at age 4. I used the code series to reinforce phonetics. When they went into public school they both jumped a grade homeschooling. I credit their understanding of phonetics to this ability

What I wanted
As we embark on our homeschooling journey I want resources to help me teach. I know how to read and can tell anyone what their letters and sounds are, but I am don't know how to teach it. This book is exactly what I needed to help me help them. It gives specifics on what I should say to prevent frustration on both of our parts. Learning to read is tough for my 6 year old and this book is going to give us the verbiage that we need to get through this beginner reading level.

lifesaver
This just made reading absolutely fun, and easy for both my daughter and I. We are so happy to have stumbled upon this book! The stress of figuring out how is no longer there, this book has everything you need. There's a script if you are not sure how to explain certain things to your child. We love it and are very excited about this book! Thanks

Great alternative for the struggling reader
My 5 year old daughter was struggling with the very traditional phonics program my other children had used. Based on friends' recommendations, we bought this book. My daughter loved the change! She is now a budding reader after 36 lessons. I do wish more phonics were introduced and the "rules" of the sounds more defined in the instruction, but I will continue this book to the end, and introduce the rules of phonics through spelling tests and practice sheets.

Disappointing
We didn't even get through the first few pages, it didn't keep our attention and the way the letters were written were confusing.

I used this program with my son almost 5 then It did not work My main criticism is the use of \"crutches\" and special symbols; things such as joining the t and h for \"th\" and telling your child to ignore the finale e Now 2 1/2 years later he is still ignoring the final e\'s which make the vowel long! The child becomes dependent on these crutches and they are unable to use any other reading materials It is true that some of these symbols are slowly \"phased out\" thoughout the book and in the last 15 or so lessons they are dropped suddenly and the book uses a regular typed font However in these last lessons the print is very small I would recommend Alphaphonics instead which simply teaches the child the letters and their sounds--that is what phonics is!

My daughter who just turned 3 is doing wonderfully with this book I highly recommend it for very young children It might take more than 100 lessons with the very young as you may have to repeat some But it is AMAZING to see my 3 year old learning how to read 4-letter words already without my help by the 12th lesson and to read her first sentence in the 13th lesson Before you begin the book YOU need to read the entire introduction You must do the lessons exactly "by the book" Reading the verbatim has proven to be a necessity to minimize confusion for my daughter
