Publisher Description:

Amerigo Vespucci, the presumed namesake of the continents of North America and South America, is a controversial figure in the history of European exploration. The number of voyages he took to the New World is in dispute, but among his accomplishments, he found a rough method of calculating longitude, made notes on the indigenous peoples he encountered, and published theories proving that Columbus had not landed in India. This volume separates the fact from fiction, the man from the myth, and sets about to responsibly examine the remaining open questions at the heart of this history of New World exploration.

The human spirit of discovery has always driven explorers to forge unchartered routes to distant territories. Before the discovery of the New World, explorers from Europe, Africa, and Asia brought the culture, politics, and customs of their homes to far-away lands. These actions encouraged trade, the spread of ideas and technology, and cultural interaction and exchange. This spirit of exploration continued with the European discovery and colonization of the Americas. The biographies in this series detail the lives and deeds of the most noteworthy explorers to cross the high seas or tread new routes across continents. Each title investigates their motivations, the often negative physical and cultural effects of exploration on native peoples, and, in turn, the influence of foreign cultures on society back home. ~Amber

We first discovered this book in our library and loved it so much we bought a copy for our own collection at home! This book is minimal on words but beautifully illustrated with vibrant colors Each of the train's cars are a different color of the rainbow which makes it incredibly easy to incorporate teaching colors to your child When we read the book we read the text on the page and then point to each car and say the colors before flipping the page My daughter actually learned her basic colors this way at the age of two after reading this book only a handful of times!
