Publisher Description:

FableVision Learning’s Mapping the World by Heart curriculum is designed for students grades 5-12 to have a comprehensive knowledge of geography that allows them to map the world entirely from memory.

The award-winning curriculum is the creation of David J. Smith with illustrations from Peter H. Reynolds. The curriculum teaches students to draw – entirely from memory – detailed world maps including the names, borders, mountain ranges, rivers, and major cities of more than 190 countries.

* Gets students excited about geography and encourages them to think globally.

* Promotes positive student interactions and collaboration, both in small group work and as a class.

* Provides teachers with flexible lessons they can easily integrate into their existing curriculum.

* Gives students a constructive goal to work towards all year long.

The curriculum includes a set of maps and a comprehensive teacher’s guide that makes it easy to integrate lessons and activities into any class’s existing curriculum. Additional maps can be purchased separately. Combining memorization with the real use of knowledge, practice, mnemonics, large and small group activities, and games, Mapping the World by Heart inspires students to study – and love – geography.

You will need to provide your students with one atlas per student or per group of students who are working together; also, other handy reference tools include a globe, and one or more copies of almanacs (such as The World Almanac, The Time Almanac, etc.). The creator, David Smith, offers recommendations for these on his website: www.mapping.com

Category Description for Mapping the World By Heart:

Your children can become junior cartographers and learn to "map the world by heart," literally, with this wonderful aid to geographical literacy. Amazing results are achieved by using this incremental program which gives students a real sense of the world's layout. A variety of wonderful activities are used to develop both map-drawing and map-reading skills. The lessons are clear and easy to use, with helpful illustrations. While not as comprehensive as a high-school geography course, this program does include the study of different cultures and global issues related to geography. It would work well as a stand-alone course for late elementary grades or junior high, or in conjunction with a geography text in high school. The program was revised and updated in 2010 and now includes the curriculum (in 3-ring binder) and a set of 17 maps. The set of maps includes 10 regional maps (Canada, U.S., Mexico, Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe and North Asia, South Asia, and Oceania) as well as blank grids and filled-in outline maps of the world in Mercator, Robinson and Equirectangular projections. Additional map sets are also available separately. Three additional appendices have been added to the curriculum, which apply the "mapping by heart" method to the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, for smaller, more focused studies. The video that was previously packaged with the curriculum is now available for viewing at the publisher's website, www.fablevisionlearning.com/mappingtheworldbyheart.

How is Mapping the World with Art different than Mapping the World by Heart?

Mapping the World By Heart Curriculum with Maps
Mapping the World By Heart Curriculum with Maps
Mapping the World With Art Book w/ CD, DVDs
Mapping the World With Art Book w/ CD, DVDs
BEST ANSWER: Mapping the world with Art has the kids actually drawing the entire globe with easy to follow drawing directions. Some kids like to use the DVDs to watch the author instruct how to do the drawings, but the directions in the book were very easy for my sixth grader to follow on his own. He really gained a great sense of the shapes and proportions on the globe, and we "saw" in detail the coast lines of places you rarely look at on a map such as the coastlines in the Arctic circle.Mapping the World by Heart is less artistic, more just labelling and memorizing locations. It was definitely less user-friendly, and none of the stories about the history of exploration and map-making.
Is this new?
A shopper on Aug 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Although the program has been available for a number of years, we carry only new products so this is not a used copy.
What year was this published?

BEST ANSWER: The copyright states 1992-2011.

I think this could be a great curriculum, but it seems to be geared so much to regular schools that it didn’t work well for our homeschool.

I was so excited to start this project. Now that I have it, there are things that made it a little less shiny in my opinion.
First the good points...It is thorough. Landforms, countries, cities, thorough. Little activities are nice but many will go unused,
I gotta say for the price I was disappointed. It's really just a thorough list of things that can be mapped. I now have to find a fairly recent atlas. Perhaps a globe? I wish that would have been known as we are on an extremely tight budget with no access to the library. I will be looking almost everything up on the internet. That being said, I could have used the $70+ dollars somewhere else.

This wasn't worth 70$ to me I'm keeping it because I will use it but I was disappointed The lessons are common sense and while I love "open and go" curriculum and don't want to make it up myself I wish I had spent that money on actual maps to copy

This comprehensive program is fun and makes geography exciting I neglected geography because I hadn't studied it since I was in 6th grade but my oldest child will graduate this year I knew that he needed more knowledge of geography to fully understand current events so I reviewed my options and selected Mapping The World By Heart I am so impressed with this program! It is designed to be used in one year but could easily be adapted to stretch across numerous years I intended to use it for my kids in grades 7-12 but I had to include my 4th and 5th graders as well because they wouldn't leave during the lesson and kept asking to work on their own maps I have visual auditory and kinesthetic learners and they all love it It provides a ready-made lesson plan as well as a 'menu' approach that lets you choose which areas you would like to address It covers everything from longitude and mapping all the countries of the world to how to say hello in different languages There is very little teacher preparation I just read the lesson ahead of time and make sure I have the correct map on our board It's flexible interactive comprehensive easy to use teaches multiple ages works with different learning styles and it's fun! It is one of the best purchases I've made in 13 years of homeschooling Well worth the cost!
