Category Description for Saxon Math:

Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.

The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Category Description for Saxon Math 2:

Skip counting; comparing numbers; solving problems; mastering all basic addition and subtraction facts; mastering multiplication to 5; adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers; measuring; perimeter and area; telling time to 5 minutes; identifying geometric shapes; identifying symmetry; identifying angles; graphing. 132 lessons.

Category Description for Saxon K-3 Program:

The Teacher's Manual contains the actual lesson plans and information vital to the effective presentation of math concepts. The consumable Meeting Books are used during the teacher-student "meeting" in which concepts are introduced, demonstrated and practiced. If teaching more than one student at the same level, you will only need one meeting book. Consumable Student Workbooks are used in grades 1-3 only and contain student materials, flash cards and practice pages. The Math K Home Study Kit contains teacher edition and meeting book. Math 1, 2, and 3 kits contain teacher edition, meeting book, and a set of 2 workbooks. Manipulatives are a vital, integral part of the program; these are not included in the Home Study Kits, but are available through us also.

I've used the Saxon program at the higher levels with my oldest son and have had great success. Now, I'm trying the lower levels with my youngest son so we can complete the entire program from beginning to end without any gaps. I love the fact that this program can carry a student all the way from elementary to high school calculus. My oldest started using Saxon around 7th grade and is now in the 11th grade. He is great at math!

We're headed into this book with our 3rd child this year, and over all I like Saxon. It's thorough, has a teacher's manual so I know what to teach, and the kids seem to like it fine. There is a lot of repetition in the worksheets, which I do not always have the kids do--I just gauge the needs and modify as needed.
Anna B on Oct 6, 2018
Best math program out there! Thorough, direct instruction, and spiral curriculum leads to deeper math understanding and long-term mastery.

I have taught all my kids with Saxon and my oldest is getting ready to graduate college in engineering. It may seem cumbersome to some people because of the repetition and so many problems each day in upper grades. But stick with it, your student will be excellent in math if you use Saxon faithfully.

We have used this curriculum for 12 years. I already have the teacher's manual, so I purchase the workbooks for each additional child when they are ready for it.

This will be my second time teaching Saxon Math 2. I loved this workbook - it was simple and straightforward. My father was a high school math teacher and recommended Saxon because repetition is a necessary component in math education. I can teach the main idea of a lesson in a matter of minutes and then the child can do the worksheet independently. I rarely follow the entire teacher's script for meeting time, which is why the lesson explanation time, for me, is so short.
Krista R on Apr 17, 2018
I feel that Saxon gives a good foundation in math concepts.
Kymberly J on Apr 13, 2018
I did saxon math as a child and it was so simple and easy to understand. I have used 2 other math curriculums and am now switching all my kids to saxon because it is just still the best tried and true math curriculum.

I like Saxon because of the script for me as a teacher, and the drilling of math facts. We do jump ahead sometimes (the first 1/3 is mostly repetition/review) but overall it's a great program!

Hi! I have the Math 2 Home Teacher's Edition manual. I need to purchase the workbooks but was wondering if the publication dates were compatible. Do the worksheets in the workbook match? My manual has a 1994 publication date. Would that match the 1991 published workbooks?
A shopper on Feb 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they will match.
Is this the homeschool edition (i.e., the same workbooks in the home study kit that are not common core aligned)?
User on Jan 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm not exactly familiar with the home study kit, but this workbook is used for the homeschool edition of saxon 2 (teacher edition attached below). It is not specifically common core aligned, although I understand that some changes will be coming, as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has purchased the Saxon curriculum. I hope someone else has more insight to add!

I have math for older kids and it came with the answers to all the drills and practice questions. Does this set come with those?
A shopper on Sep 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Math 2 student workbook / fact card pack does not come with the answers OR the teacher lesson information that is necessary to teach the lesson. That information is in the large spiral bound teacher edition which can be purchased as a set with the student workbook / fact cards.
Can my 2nd grader start the 2nd grade Saxon math after being in public school the last two years?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'd imagine that an average 2nd grade math student would be able to jump right in. There's some review of previously learned concepts. Additionally, the idea with this program is not that you know everything before you move on, but that you are introduced to a topic and continue to practice it. Mastery will come with time, and lessons build on each other incrementally, logically, and with lots of practice and parent involvement.
I would like to not have to buy the entire kit...I know that "it's worth it" to get the whole kit, but I truly cannot afford the extra if I can just use the workbooks at this grade level and can improvise for manipulatives and such. Are the workbooks straightforward enough to not need a textbook or teacher's book at the second grade level? Thank-you
A shopper on Jul 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You need to buy the teacher's manual so that you can do the math meeting each day. It's very scripted and well-written, but it would be difficult to know how to fill in the meeting book without it. I bought a used teacher's manual on ebay for $10 last year. Also, if you have a local curriculum swap center, that's a great place to buy the manuals used. Hope that helps!

Love Saxon
After seeing the progress of my first child, it was worth it to stick with Saxon. I did it with my second child and the prof is in the pudding. The repetition of concepts and built in review will make your child’s stronger math student.

Saxon Math 2
I have used Saxon math for all of my five children. I find it to be easy to understand and offers lots of review of concepts. My youngest will be in 2nd grade this coming school year so she will be starting Saxon 2.

Math, good... paper, HORRIBLE
I'm taking my second child through this set and had to replace the worksheets this year but the quality of the paper is SO BAD. "Perforated" is a suggestion, we rip almost every work sheet trying to get it out. Just be warned.

The actual math is fantastic though and I would recommend Saxon to anyone! We did Singapore with my first daughter until 2nd grade and the improvement in her skills as well as our math lessons was off the charts when we switched.

replacement Consumables are pricey.
We really like Saxon and will continue using it as we educate our 5 children. We have invested of course, in the initial Homeschool Kits when we began new levels (school years). However the price of the consumables gets pricey. It would be nice to see this particular package without the fact cards...I have stacks of them leftover from our last child that went through this particular level. 34 + dollars for the two workbooks and the fact-cards is just plain HIGH. The meeting book is separately available for 14 dollars...again HIGH. Kind of leaves honest homeschoolers in a tough've got to have those consumables to use with you next child but gracious sakes !
