Product Description:

Winston Grammar Set contains 30 student worksheets, pre- and post-tests, teacher's manual, quiz keys, clue cards and noun-function cards.

Category Description for Winston Grammar:

So, you want to include grammar in your studies - but all that diagramming and dissecting of sentences doesn't appeal? How about a more hands-on, participative approach? Winston Grammar is a grammar method using very little writing, no diagramming and is a truly kinesthetic program. Colorful "clue" cards containing the parts of speech (with definitions) are used in lieu of diagramming. These cards are laid out in the same pattern as the sentence; the goal is for students to reach an intuitive understanding of the use of the parts of speech and language structure. As students learn more parts of speech and their functions, additional cards are added. On the back side of the clue cards are instructions showing Winston Grammar marking conventions so you may progress to using these to identify parts of speech in a sentence (ie; underline nouns once, verbs twice, etc.). The regular program is sufficient for 3-4 years of grammar instruction. Since the mastery approach of learning is used, you can start at any age or grade level, but the basic course should be completed before progressing to the advanced program. The advanced program contains a review of the material covered in the basic program, then progresses to more complex grammatical structures. Note that Winston Grammar does not cover punctuation or verb usage, but these are commonly found in other English coursework.

Several supplemental items are also available. The Basic Program Supplementary Workbook contains 30 additional consumable worksheets that provide more practice for students using basic Winston Grammar. Tests and quizzes are included right in the workbook. You may purchase the additional workbook without an answer key or as a set. Winston Word Works is an extension of the Basic program. It teaches proper usage of words that are commonly misused - like lie and lay, who and whom, I and me, etc. - and is meant to be used between the Basic and Advanced Programs. Word Works includes a teacher book, a student workbook and cards.

When I was a child my mother found and used Winston Grammar to use with us. Now that I am teaching my own children, I remember grammar lessons fondly and wish to impart grammar concepts to them in the same friendly manner.

I hope to go through this slowly and just do one or two sentences a day as a warm up before our grammar/literature time. We like literature based units, but this will give us a solid grammar foundation that slowly builds with lots of review. Some days we will use sentences from our literature selection instead of the ones provided in the workbook. I like that this can be a quick and solid base for us to work from.

because my son has had challenges with reading due to dyslexia, and IEW grammar involved a great deal of writing, I saw this program recommended by author of dysgraphia package...basic grammar instruction without diagramming. It looks as though it's a more kinesthetic approach to learning grammar. I am otherwise not familiar with it.

I read that this program will take your student through an entire year of grammar instruction. How is this accomplished if there are only 30 worksheets?
A shopper on May 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I had my student do the program once a week. The program goes deep towards the middle of the book and it might even be a good idea to split the ten sentences into two days of work. It is a great program to use especially if you are introducing a foreign language at the same time, that really helped my students grasp the English language even more.
what is in this package? is it only the teacher manual? Item #001519. thank you.
A shopper on Apr 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Contains 30 student worksheets, pre- and post-tests, teacher's manual, quiz keys, clue cards and noun-function cards.
Does this Winston Grammar pack include everything I need to use with one student or are there other components I need to buy?
A shopper on Dec 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Everything you need for the program is in this packet
Does this teach how to diagram sentences?
A shopper on May 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not. However, it is an excellent resource as a precursor to diagramming. Analytical Grammar is a great resource for diagramming.
What year was this reprinted in?
User on Oct 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My teacher's manual from this package (that was purchased in the summer of 2016) says, "Reprinted in 2015." I hope that helps! :)

Works well for my Dyslexic kid
I purchased this program for my 13 year old who is dyslexic and dysgraphic. This means both reading and writing are hard for her. This workbook has been a great program for her this year. The wide spacing between rows of text make it easier to read than most grammar programs. The cards make it multisensory and help her if she can't remember something from a previous lesson and it has helped her gain a better grasp of English grammar. As a result of using this program foreign language study is much easier for her, too.

If you are looking for a program that explains the parts of speech and helps your older student identify things in a slow and steady way, I strongly recommend this program. While I think it would work fine for typical students, I think that those with learning disabilities would really benefit from this method.

Great choice for us
This was just what we needed. Parts of speech make sense with the simple, straight forward approach to identify words in sentences.

Easy, Short, Concise, & Engaging
My oldest child is so pleased with this curriculum! It has changed his view from grammar being tedious and boring to I want to do more! It's great for him because he's a visual learner and will be perfect for my daughter in a couple years because she is a kinesthetic learner. I am so glad I found this and only wish I did three years ago.

This would work....
We had been using IEW for grammar and while IEW a little more complicated and comprehensive than Winston I like that the sentences used are part of a story. It kept my kids engaged because they wanted to follow the story. The Winston book just uses random sentences. It would work just fine and is simple to use and teach, but we like IEW better.

Hands-on basic grammar
Fun, easy, hands-on way to teach basic parts of speech and noun functions. I am using it with my 15 year old daughter. I was using another grammar program, but realized she needed to have a better grasp of the basic parts of speech before continuing with that, so this has been a helpful tool to accomplish that. I do not have her use the cards for every sentence, as that would be more than she really needs at this point, but they are a helpful tool.

Easy to use
This is easy to use and clear to follow instructions. I bought it because it had the hands-on aspect. The cards do help my children but after a while they stop using them. However, they are really handy when kids get stuck. The lessons are short. I do feel we go through them really quickly so I'll probably have to look into another grammar program down the road. One thing I wish it had was punctuations. They focus on parts of speech but no punctuations. Overall my kids enjoy them. If not for anything else, just the fact my children have no complaints, I'd buy it again!

Winston Grammar
Our 11 year old right brained learner is enjoying Winston Grammar. It is definitely reinforcing basic grammar for her. Each lesson takes 45 plus minutes because of the color coded cards. However, I feel it's worth it.
