Category Description for Winston Grammar:

So, you want to include grammar in your studies - but all that diagramming and dissecting of sentences doesn't appeal? How about a more hands-on, participative approach? Winston Grammar is a grammar method using very little writing, no diagramming and is a truly kinesthetic program. Colorful "clue" cards containing the parts of speech (with definitions) are used in lieu of diagramming. These cards are laid out in the same pattern as the sentence; the goal is for students to reach an intuitive understanding of the use of the parts of speech and language structure. As students learn more parts of speech and their functions, additional cards are added. On the back side of the clue cards are instructions showing Winston Grammar marking conventions so you may progress to using these to identify parts of speech in a sentence (ie; underline nouns once, verbs twice, etc.). The regular program is sufficient for 3-4 years of grammar instruction. Since the mastery approach of learning is used, you can start at any age or grade level, but the basic course should be completed before progressing to the advanced program. The advanced program contains a review of the material covered in the basic program, then progresses to more complex grammatical structures. Note that Winston Grammar does not cover punctuation or verb usage, but these are commonly found in other English coursework.

Several supplemental items are also available. The Basic Program Supplementary Workbook contains 30 additional consumable worksheets that provide more practice for students using basic Winston Grammar. Tests and quizzes are included right in the workbook. You may purchase the additional workbook without an answer key or as a set. Winston Word Works is an extension of the Basic program. It teaches proper usage of words that are commonly misused - like lie and lay, who and whom, I and me, etc. - and is meant to be used between the Basic and Advanced Programs. Word Works includes a teacher book, a student workbook and cards.

I already have the teacher manual, but each student requires their own workbook. I'm ordering this for my second child who will be using this program.

Winston Grammar has been a very effective grammar program for my daughter. Now using it with my son. Highly recommend especially for a hands on or visual learner.

I hope to go through this slowly and just do one or two sentences a day as a warm up before our grammar/literature time. We like literature based units, but this will give us a solid grammar foundation that slowly builds with lots of review. Some days we will use sentences from our literature selection instead of the ones provided in the workbook. I like that this can be a quick and solid base for us to work from. (I needed an additional workbook for my other child.)

I was trained in this program at the Slingerland Institute and need a new workbook for one of my students

This has been a go-to curriculum for our students with dyslexia for several years. It breaks down each part of speech, provides cards for physical manipulation and builds concepts in a sequential order--multi-sensory. I understand that it was developed by someone at the Winston School for the dyslexic student about 30 years ago. Easy to understand and easy to teach.

I have used this program with my three older children and believe it is a great way to give my students a concrete way to learn the different parts of speech. It is absolutely necessary for each child to mark up the workbook. Since I already have the rest of the materials, I am purchasing only the student workbook.

Older students really did well grasping parts of speech and prefered this to diagramming sentences. It's time now for the younger two.

Best program I've ever used to visually and kinesthetically teach grammar. It actually helped ME learn it as I taught it.

This is the only grammar book we use. Keeps it simple while covering the topic.

Winston Grammar has helped my children go from total grammar confusion to understanding and mastery. I love the developmental approach of mastering concepts before moving on. Perfect for middle school and high school students. We have progressed through Basic until students "hit the wall" and put it away. Then, we repurchased the Basic workbook and started back at the beginning the next year. The familiarity helps them feel more confident before tackling more difficult concepts.

A complete and concise grammar program that is easily taught in just 15 minutes a day. Hands on and student/teacher friendly.
Elizabeth T on Aug 1, 2018
This is an excellent study with which we've had great success in our family. Building skills gradually but cumulatively helps to master grammar and become a master!

Winston Grammar is a great curriculum to teach the parts of speech and functions of nouns. I've used it with 8 of my kids and will use it with the last 2 as well.

To replace missing worksheets. This is the grammar program I know and I believe it is the best.

I love the cards that are used as manipulatives for grammar. This method really breaks concepts down.
Stephanie S on Mar 15, 2017
This is a very understandable way to do grammar. You get to keep reviewing what you learned and the cards really help. Used this with my first student; buying it for my other two.

Looking forward to trying this with our dyslexic son.

Winston Grammar is the only course that "clicks" with my son for learning parts of speech. This year we intend to repeat the basics workbook as a daily review to give him time before beginning the next level.

Is this workbook free of markings?
A shopper on Jan 17, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure if I understand the question correctly. Each lesson has 10-12 sentences that they are to label with symbols that reference grammar. Example: Put a check (✔️) over articles. Underline the nouns once.
