Product Description:

The Lab Sheet Annotations contains the specific instructions for use of the children's lab sheets. It is the daily teaching companion of teachers using the Miquon Math Lab Materials. Each topic is introduced by a discussion of the mathematics underlying the children's work along with teaching suggestions and anecdotes.

The book contains a complete set of the 650 student lab sheets (reduced in size) that appear in the workbooks. The intervening text indicates the objectives of the sheets and ways in which the students may use them. Included are preliminary activities, teaching suggestions, and follow-up activities for many of the lab sheets. The annotations provide questions that the teacher can ask to reinforce the concepts underlying the problems on the sheets. The text also suggests activities for practice in applying those concepts. Where the procedures and objectives are apparent at a glance, lab sheets are annotated.

Category Description for Miquon Math Labs:

Math is not just numbers! Using Cuisenaire rods, Miquon Math Labs allows children to model numbers and operations concretely. It uses a hands-on, pattern-building, discovery method that fosters independence and creativity in problem solving. The unique page-numbering format of the program allows for flexibility - use each book straight through, covering a variety of topics, or use only the pages in each book relating to a specific topic (easily identified by the alpha-numeric page numbering system).

Instead of holding off on more difficult math topics until later grades, the Miquon approach is unique in teaching all four basic math operations in Grade 1 - plus fractions, clock arithmetic, area, volume and factoring. This builds confidence in children as they see how the basic operations are intterrelated and takes the "mystery" out of these otherwise-delayed topics. By Grade 3, children understand different base systems and graph algebraic equations!

These are not typical workbooks that test what a child already has learned, but lab sheets - teaching pages. Children are shown that, while there is only one correct solution, there are different ways to arrive at it, and it encourages them to develop their own techniques. The "standard" approach is not always the best. For example, which is easier, to teach borrowing and carrying for a problem like 400 - 298 or to teach the the child to restate the problem as 398 - 298 + 2 or 400 - 300 + 2? Techniques like these really help to develop mental dexterity in problme solving. After using Miquon with our seven children, we can attest that this program has promoted flexibility in problem solving and teaches them to find the best technique for the situation. Ours students now tackle new or difficult problems creatively, even fearlessly!

Altogether, the six student workbooks contain over 650 lab sheets. Concepts covered include: counting, odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, equalities, place value, number line and functions, factoring, squaring, simultaneous equations, graphing equations, geometric recognition, length, area, volume, series and progressions, grid and arrow games, mapping, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

We recommend purchasing the Lab Sheet Annotations. This is the teacher's guide for all six workbooks. Because the approach taken in the program is so different, it explains the reasoning behind the presentation and provides several suggestions on how to present each topic. It also provides preliminary activities for a concrete understanding of the math concepts as well as more detailed explanations for many of the workbook pages. While answers are supplied for some of the more "tricky" sheets, most worksheets are shown sans answers, so take the time to fill in the answers as you correct work for your first Miquon student - then you'll have a completed key to use with the next!

The Miquon Math program would be an excellent start in math to move into any other program, but it would lend itself particularly well to those intending to use the Singapore approach to math in the future.

Most pages can be easily figured out, but occasionally you need to know what is hoped for on a page - it's not obvious. This is where the Annotations becomes valuable. This is a must-have, even though you won't use it very often.

I used to teach with these, and now the school my daughter is in only uses textbooks with very little manipulatives. I struggles so much in math with this approach and she has been too. Excited to use these for summer practice. Already with the rods she is gaining number sense which she had little understanding of from September to March.

I was told this would help explain some of the instructions since the math books themselves are not always intuitive.

This is an essential part of the Miquon curriculum. I heard it would be impossible to teach without this book, which acts as a teacher's manual.

I wanted to keep the whole package of Miquon Math together and use all the components. I wanted to make sure I had all the side notes, teacher info, etc. that I would need to do my best as a mom/teacher. I do wish that there was more info on each of the products."

I was looking for a hands on math curriculum. After watching the videos and doing some research, this looked like a good choice. I won't know until I have reviewed them and my children have tried them out whether or not this series is for us. However, I am excited to get started!

Great program! Instructions a little vague.
I love the Miquon series. I wish some of the instructions were a little more clear.

I first used Miquon Math with my then 5 yr old daughter After completing the first 'red book' and part of the second 'orange' book we switched to Singapore Math which has been a huge blessing to us I stopped using Miquon with some regret We loved it but didn't want to do two programs and I wasn't convinced that Miquon was rigorous enough I wish I hadn't dismissed it so quickly First off that Miquon is 'fun' is a great strength and not at all indicative of not being serious math I credit Miquon's approach with my daughter's comfort with and joy in arithmetic When my son began struggling with his Singapore I brought out the old lab-sheet annotations and used it to make some of the worksheets to do with my son He enjoyed them so much that I am buying the workbooks to use with him Miquon was fun and effective for my very verbal daughter but I think this program really shines with kids who learn best by doing as my son does He is a hands-on learner and this program is especially good for students like him for whom verbal explanations of mathematical concepts are difficult to graspMiquon is fun and easy to use and doesn't require a great deal of prep work from the adult Although I use it as a supplement to another program it is more than adequate as a stand-alone program I highly recommend Miquon Math for anyone but especially for those with young 'engineer/tinkerers' in the house This program is also very inexpensive compared to many of the other choices and very user-friendly for parents who may not have a strong math background
