Category Description for Horizons Math:

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Although it may be more advanced for grade level than the "average" program, I don't consider that a negative. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons. The program relies on few separately purchased manipulatives by utilizing common household items and including charts and number lines found in the teacher's handbooks. A useful table in the handbook shows the integration of manipulatives in lessons so you can tell at a glance just what you'll need. Analytical reasoning and mental acumen are stressed throughout the series, and memorization and drill are not neglected. The teacher handbook is the heart of the program, containing daily lesson plans that are easy to implement. Reduced student pages are a tremendous aid in planning and supply answers to the worktext exercises. Besides plans, the handbook contains an overview, materials list, activities, and supplemental worksheets (approx. one for each 4 lessons). Designed for homeschoolers, the activities, language, and lessons require no alteration. There are 160 lessons per level, each requiring approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Tests are given after every 10 lessons to assess retention of cumulative skills. While a good part of each lesson is oral (especially at the K level), the enticing, colorful student worksheets lay foundations for lessons and review concepts previously taught. There are two workbooks per grade level. Please note that the actual lesson is to be taught by you - there are only brief instructions on each page of the workbooks, which are not intended to be self- instructional. Boxed set contains the teacher book and 2 student workbooks. Additional Student Worksheet Packets contain one photocopy of each reproducible master in the teacher book.

We are on our third child to use the Horizons Math program. It's a winner. We have many learning styles and speeds, but all our kids like Horizons. I like that it's no-nonsense and concise. Easy to teach and implement.

I chose this program as I have used it with two other kids and decided to continue on with the 3rd in the same workbooks. For a kid who is entering already K knowing their numbers, this is a great step to give them some more meat without them getting bored. Colorful worksheets!

I have tried too many math programs. We found our way back to Horizons and have no intention of leaving. Horizons is spiral and works well for us. The colorful lessons are roughly one page front/back, covering several topics per lesson. The pace and style of this program works well for us.

Horizons Math uses a spiral learning system to help young kids cement their math knowledge early on. I recommend Horizons up through 2nd grade, but after that I've chosen other math curriculum for my kids because they move too fast through some of the concepts without enough practice for my kids.

Is this regular math or common core math?
Kate on Apr 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This is regular math. I do Horizon Math for K-3rd grade, then I switch to Saxon. I especially like the K and 1st grade. Great prep for higher level skills. They also still teach time on the analog clock, which I love. They do give lots of practice pages but if your child has mastered the concept, then just skip it. It is a lot of busy work, but some children need the practice. I would definitely recommend this math book.
How often is God/the Bible/religious content mentioned in this? I have heard wonderful things about Horizons but would like to keep religion out of our math lessons. Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: One of the reasons that we love Horizins is because most of their things incorporate a Biblical worldview. Math, however, doesn't.

Simple to use. Makes math easy to do daily.
My kids (3 so far) have used Horizons Math K.

They like the colorful pages and I like how easy it is to use. Math WILL get done everyday because it’s realistic and not complicated.

I tried another program with manipulative and different hands on activities. It was very dynamic, however I dreaded math every day and often had to skip days because I hadn’t done the prep-work.

Horizons Math K is simple to use and teaches everything your child needs to know in a gradual way.

Great math workbook
I like how new and review topics are included in each lesson. The lessons are interesting and colorful for my 5 year old daughter but not too overwhelming. Instructions are clear and there are a handful of different things to do on each page so my child doesn't get bored just doing one thing over and over.

Well done!
My son and I both enjoy it. He likes the colorful lessons, and I appreciate the layout. He is responding well, and I plan on buying more of their products. We are currently also using the Horizons Reading & Phonics, and are equally pleased!

Engaging
This product makes math easier simply because the children enjoy working in the book--the pictures, colors make it fun for them to engage. I would not regard the material as "simple" however. It is challenging and very thorough. There are a few things I would change if it were up to me-- first off, the style of 4 that they teach (pointed top, not open top). I also wish they had more elementary math facts (additives to 10), more vertical (vs horizontal/number sentence) problems, less reliance on number line charts. That said, I am still pleased with the curriculum and have ordered this at other times for my other children. It provides a good foundation for math.

Thought they would like it more
This is so colorful and full of variety so I thought it would keep their interest better. It become a big ordeal and almost a meltdown every time the book came out. Not sure what they disliked but they handle my boring black and white sheet of a handful if problems much better. ?????
