Category Description for Horizons Math:

Admittedly, no math program will work for everyone - but I find few flaws in this motivating and well-laid out program. Although it may be more advanced for grade level than the "average" program, I don't consider that a negative. Because of the developmental approach to learning in this program, even a non-math type can easily succeed, while the "math whiz" will be challenged by the advanced topics introduced early. Concepts are introduced incrementally, then practiced, developed, and continually reviewed as other concepts are introduced. Horizons lays a solid foundation for numerical literacy with an early emphasis on hands-on, concept learning via manipulatives and one-on-one lessons. The program relies on few separately purchased manipulatives by utilizing common household items and including charts and number lines found in the teacher's handbooks. A useful table in the handbook shows the integration of manipulatives in lessons so you can tell at a glance just what you'll need. Analytical reasoning and mental acumen are stressed throughout the series, and memorization and drill are not neglected. The teacher handbook is the heart of the program, containing daily lesson plans that are easy to implement. Reduced student pages are a tremendous aid in planning and supply answers to the worktext exercises. Besides plans, the handbook contains an overview, materials list, activities, and supplemental worksheets (approx. one for each 4 lessons). Designed for homeschoolers, the activities, language, and lessons require no alteration. There are 160 lessons per level, each requiring approximately 20-30 minutes per day. Tests are given after every 10 lessons to assess retention of cumulative skills. While a good part of each lesson is oral (especially at the K level), the enticing, colorful student worksheets lay foundations for lessons and review concepts previously taught. There are two workbooks per grade level. Please note that the actual lesson is to be taught by you - there are only brief instructions on each page of the workbooks, which are not intended to be self- instructional. Boxed set contains the teacher book and 2 student workbooks. Additional Student Worksheet Packets contain one photocopy of each reproducible master in the teacher book.

since it is not secular it won't be covered by my son's county homeschool, and since we like the program we decided we wanted to continue with it.

Changing from Singapore Math to Horizons. Had better success with Horizons in the past.
Chris M on Feb 13, 2018
I am hopeful that this will help math be more approachable, as online didn't seem to connect with us. I think math is a hands-on type of learning, working through problems at a pace that allows stopping, thinking and assessing and so on, not watching a cartoon give an automated directive. This lesson seems approachable and we are looking forward to trying it for the first time this year.

I've been very happy with the approach of Horizons; been using it since kindergarten with my daughter.

Have used Horizons since K. Good use of review, repetition, and keeps it interesting with graphics. Worksheets, if needed or used, give additional practice.

This program is challenging, compact, and easy to use.

After using many popular math programs, I found that this one was the best fit for us. The teacher's portion of the lessons is introduced in about 15 minutes and the workbooks are colorful. The program also continues to review previous concepts in each lesson. I must say the teacher's manual is a must!! And read it cover to cover before you begin using it. I missed a lot of instructional information by not reading the entire manual before beginning the program.

Good series. Covers a lot of material.

my son has used Horizons Math for years. He loves it. And math is not even one of his best subjects but with this he actually learns what he is studying and enjoys doing math. I think its the approach that Horizons uses, and the lessons are short enough before my son losses focus but with the repeated approach they use my son learns the concepts. when in town, he will actually be counting up money or something and he will say, hey that's what I learned in my math book yesterday.

What is included in this set?
A shopper on Aug 1, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It comes with a teachers guide which is around 450pages. Also, comes with two student workbooks which are around 80 lessons each. The student workbooks covers everything in the teachers guide, they are just broken into smaller books so that they are easier for the student to handle. Also included in the teachers guide are extra worksheets with answers, quarter test with answers, and a final exam with answers. All of these are included just for extra practice if needed and as an individual need basis.

good supplement
I supplement it with Singapore Primary Mathematics 5A & 5B. Horizons math is significantly easier then Singapore which provides a good balance, having my son do one page of each book daily. I have my son start working on his new math books in the beginning of every summer that way, he completes his math programs by the end of the school year. Horizons is a very long, lenghty program and Singapore is shorter in pages.

Our family has used all but 6th grade so far for this math program and has achieved positive results To fully achieve all the program has designed you MUST purchase the teachers manual Instructions/lessons are not presented in the worktext until 4th grade In addition you must drill math facts on a regular basis besides using worksheetsthere is not enough practice in the workbooksI also highly recommend buying the optional worksheets (or copying them from teachers manual) These provide invaluable practiceThis program works well for visual and hands-on learners Plenty of opportunities for easy manipulativesWhat I like best about the program is the continual review (they call it the spiral method) Concepts are never forgotten since the student reviews them continually throughout the yearMy only criticism is that the program is weak with their word problems I use a daily problem solving book to compensate

I have found Horizons math to be thorough and enjoyable Lessons are colorful and include several different exercises for example a single lesson may cover time money addition multiplication and word problems This keeps each function fresh in the student's mind The only problem I've found is that each set is about a year ahead of my child's level so in 4th grade she's using level 3 etc Also additional practice in multiplication has been necessary Overall it's the best program I've found thus far
