Don Pedro Menéndez (1519-1574) of Spain is a name probably not known to many. With his sailing skills and ability to thwart off pirates, he became the Captain General of the Spanish Fleet for Emperor Charles V. He led the group of colonists, missionaries, and soldiers to the new world and they established St. Augustine Florida.
