Description

The introduction of sea animals as a new animal type is the most notable component of this new expansion as well as the addition of zoo cards, conservation and goal cards that include these animals. There are several other changes and additions, which complement these new animals as well as some nice enhancements that are more clarifications and nice visuals than “needed to change” items.  A summary of these follows:

New Animals and Enclosures:  There are two types of enclosures for Sea Animals – the small one accommodates two animal spaces and the large is for five.  Players do not need to upgrade their build action to place these enclosures.

A New Association Board and University:  The new university represents all animal types. When chosen, the player can pick a specific animal type along with its matching University. The advantage to adding these is they count as a pre-requisite animal type to qualify for conservation projects or playing animal cards that require one or more of an animal type in your zoo before they are played.  The new Association Board accommodates this new choice of university type.

New Action Cards: These new cards replace all player action cards with a new card layout and added iconography.  Also included are different action cards that grant players a unique effect throughout the game such as building with a strength of X+1 or drawing cards with no need to discard. Each game, players replace two of their standard action cards with two new unique cards.

Everything Else:  There are new zoo cards that are shuffled in with the others.  There are also 38 replacement cards for sponsor cards, conservation projects and end of game goals.  Some have changed from the originals and others just reflect the added animal type when illustrating an “all animals” icon.  Also, found in this expansion are six new and one replacement bonus tile for the conservation track.  Regarding player tokens and counters, there are new counter tokens for each player whose shape better corresponds to the track that they move on.  The new tokens replace the cubes used to complete a conservation project, each in a different animal shape and with each of the player token colors. Finally, there is a new tile for solo play mode.

Although Ark Nova is a rich, rewarding and varied game at its core, this expansion brings even more depth, content and action choices. I recommend adding it if you love Ark Nova and have become thoroughly familiar with it first. For 1-4 players in 90-150 minutes. Requires Ark Nova to play. ~Marsha
