solid learning
IEW courses are consistent, solid learning. It is so freeing to have a writing curriculum that gives concrete expectations for essays and a methodical, understandable process with which to achieve the goals. I am grateful for Andrew Pudewa! This has helped our whole family improve in writing.

Produce confident writers
I first used U.S. History-Based Writing when my daughter was in fourth grade, and at that time, the edition had them writing five-paragraph reports and analyzing literature which was so discouraging to us (but I was determined to plod through). In the newer, revised edition, Verstegen recognizes that the students need more explanation, time, and maturity before progressing to that level. At the end of the year, a mid- to upper-elementary student will be able to write a cohesive and intriguing paragraph (or three) which in future years can be easily transformed into complicated pieces. The pacing works well for our co-op and parents are pleased with the outcomes it produces. As a volunteer instructor, I recommend it because it is clearly laid out to minimize my prep time. Watching the TSS dvd's is a must before working with your class.

I have used IEW for the last two years as I have taught fourth-seventh grade students We have utilized both the Middle Ages book and the Early American History Volume 1 I can not tell you how much my students love to write now I had boys who would not even attempt key word outlines last year and now they are scrambling to be the first to read their finished paper IEW breaks writing down to a very manageable art My students know that they are becoming more adept writers with each paper they work on They are including such things as metaphors similes personification and alliteration in each of their paragraphs They are also learning to vary their sentence structure which makes for a much more interesting paper to read I can not recommend this resource enough! It is one of those products that after finding it I wonder how I ever homeschooled without it!

I used IEW US History I several years ago and it was wonderful. I expect no less from this newer edition, although I am curious to see the changes since this edition covers so many more topics. I plan to use it with my 6th grade daughter, and perhaps a few of her friends.

Do I need the TWSS or can this be used as a stand alone?
A shopper on Nov 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you are completely unfamiliar with IEW resources, and want to continue using it for a few years, the TWSS is helpful. But it is definitely not essential, in my opinion. I started in a small group using ONLY the student book. If you are new to IEW the teacher book is probably helpful, but I generally only use the student book at home. We are already familiar with IEW, however.
What are the titles of the 6 optional novels referenced in the appendix of this workbook?
A shopper on Jul 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Literature suggestions: The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Johnny Tremain, The Sign of the Beaver, By the Great Horn Spoon, Rifles for Watie, Hattie Big Sky, and Journey to Topaz. An extra title was added when the course was revised.
Does the teacher edition contain the student edition as well? (for US Hx IEW grade 6 - 8)
A shopper on May 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does include all the lessons and worksheets, however the answers and notes are shown as well. You would need both books to complete the class. In fact, my student was enrolled in a co-op class. Yet, I still needed the TM in order to help her with homework and to understand the assignments. Hope that helps!
