I used Mad Libs Junior with a (barely) four year old reader who had just finished Teach Your Child to Read in 100 easy Lessons I chose this level of Mad libs because he had only the handwriting experience from the aforementioned book not his reading level In retrospect this was a very good decision despite that his reading level was a little higher than that presented in Mad Libs Junior Mad Libs sticks a toe across the line into the creation phase of learning so the lower reading level of Junior made the task much more appropriate I did have to explain what nouns verbs and adjectives are but only in the most rudimentary sense before he could begin However he was quickly able to produce nouns verbs and adjectives for the completion of each page and with very little effort on my part could describe their functions in a sentence While we often had to correct the spelling of his words his grammatical understanding after finishing 4 of these books was sufficient to begin Easy Grammar Grade 2 He only finished four of the Mad Libs books because he was no longer interested in them and ready for more challenging workI've not used the next level of Mad Libs books for any other purpose than road trip entertainment but based on my experience I think they would work very well for an older student to learn the basic parts of speech or as reinforcementThe junior level has one page stories that are far more suited to very young children's attention spans than the next level booksOverall a great buy that taught the most basic elements of grammar in a way that strengthened reading skills threw in some spelling and snuck in a little of that dreaded beast handwriting All while keeping a very young student occupied long enough for me to help a sibling with algebra
