Wonderful
This is an amazing program. I am using Levels 1 and 2 with my daughters. My younger daughter has always been overwhelmed by writing but this program breaks the process down into manageable steps. She enjoys the reading excerpts and has checked out some selections from the library. My older daughter requested a more rigorous writing program and Level 2 is just that. Although she did not do Level 1 last year, they give just enough review for a child with more developed writing skills to catch on to this program. I am so extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Excellent, systematic, thorough, classical writing curriculum. This curriculum provides a clear and concise strategy for writing and allows independent growth. I wish I knew about the Susan Wise Bauer curriculum earlier!

We just completed level 1 and it helped my son learn with writing skills. We are starting level 2. It is a good foundation for middle school age writing.

My son (NOT a natural writer) made very good progress with Level One in this series. I expect to continue to build on that in Level Two.

She is the best person I have found to teach writing

Used this with my eldest son and buying it for the next in line; was SO easy to use (you HAVE to have the teacher's manual) and very clear/simple for teaching strong writing and literary analysis even with very little upper English background. It's definitely advanced - can be used for an advanced 6th grader if taken slowly, or 7th-9th graders.

This is an area that I need to catch up on.

I've used the younger levels for Language ARts written by the author and liked them well enough, so I decided to use this as well. Very well written and thorough. However, this past year we switched to the IEW program and find it a much better fit. It is easier to see your end goals with IEW, and the students prefers how much easier writing seems when taught the IEW way. They no longer whine about not knowing what to do. IEW makes writing so clear.

Love this series. It is very logical and breaks writing down into very specific skills that can then be improved.

We are completing level one next week. It was challenging, in a good way. This is a rigorous curriculum that integrates science and history through writing assignments.

It is a complete, self-paced grammar and writing curriculum. I need a curriculum like this for the group of home schooled students that I will be teaching through a one-day kind of academy."

My daughter has completed Writing With Ease and the first level of Writing With Skill. She is really growing as a writer and I know that this program has helped both of us. We use the student workbook and the instructor book. I am very satisfied with this composition curriculum - it helps to make writing instruction more objective.

My daughter, who is the sixth grade, is close to completing Writing With Skill Level 1. We've been very pleased with this writing curriculum and we're continuing on with the series. I like that it's challenging, it teaches expository writing well, and it provides rubrics to guide the parent in assessing each composition.

can you use this student book without the teacher manual?
A shopper on Jul 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You could use much of it. Some of the activities (like the poetry analysis section) involve guided discussions or lessons you talk through and there are fairly involved teacher scripts in the teacher guide. They aren't the kind of thing you could guess at from looking at the student book, you would probably just have to skip those activities. The teacher's guide also has pretty detailed writing samples and criteria for evaluation and feedback. So, I guess in short, yes, you can use the student workbook without the teachers guide, especially if you envision it as independent work and don't intend to give much feedback. But if you want to use the program as it was designed and be more hands on as an instructor, the teacher's guide is helpful and occasionally necessary.
My son will be a senior in high school. I've realized that we haven't focused enough on writing. We have not done level one. I'm wondering if we should skip it and start with level two. Thoughts?

BEST ANSWER: I would recommend staying with Level 1. I've taught both levels at a co-op with about 14 students each class. My high schoolers had just as much to learn as the middle schoolers. It is a great curriculum. All papers had to be in tbe MLA format which helped my 11th grader with the college English classes he then took during his senior year. The 2nd book references the things learned in the 1st level quite a bit. Though level 1 may start out easy, I guarantee that if the work is done as instructed it will be challenging for the student that is not familiar with more structured writing. Follow the rubrics so the student understands what is needed for the main writing assignments. I did have another student start with Level 2 as a senior. She did very well but I was very familiar with Level 1 and could help with the references to it throughout Level 2. Either level you choose to go with will bring about incredible improvement in your student's writing but you must have them do the work. It is worth it. I have heard from all my students parents about how pleased they are/were with their students' work. Hope this helps and enjoy!
