Very Disappointed - Very Different
I was very disappointed with this 4th Edition Algebra I book. In fact, I do NOT recommend it at all. After successfully using Saxon Math with my two homeschooled children, we suddenly hit a wall with this edition. Three major things are different. (1) This is not truly a Saxon homeschool book. Instead, it was developed with/heavily influenced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the public school market, even though it's also being sold for homeschool. (2) As a result, the daily lesson is taught differently. With previous editions, the textbook provides detailed explanations since the textbook is the teacher; however, with the 4th edition, there are no detailed explanations, only confusing, brief texts (since public school kids would still have a classroom teacher) and then several sample problems worked out. About halfway into the book, it became very confusing with the lack of explanations and clear indication of when to use which formula. The sample problems were always very easy, but the homework typically featured complex problems or variations that the lesson didn't address. (3) There is also a substantial difference in the 4th edition's 30 daily lesson problems. There are very, very few straightforward problems about the day's lesson. Instead, there are only 2 or 3 problems from the day, and almost all of the rest are basically story problems (problem-solving). The cyclical review is still there, but the problems turn the lessons all around and want you to analyze it from various points of view. It's hard to explain. It sounds good, but the difficulty is that the student doesn't have enough repetition to master the formula/task before being required to analyze it differently. The student never knows what formula to use because it's always being asked a different way. Our family is going back to the 3rd edition books.

We have been very successive with Saxon for years and love the spiral approach. We want an approach that is independent of watching videos.

I picked this for several reasons: 1. it is very comprehensive, 2. The DVD teacher, and 3. text book based rather than on-line.

Can you purchase the Saxon Algebra 1 solutions guide without the text book? This edition with the camera on the cover.

BEST ANSWER: Perhaps but be careful as some printings have been updated. Be certain you get the solutions manual for the printing you have!
Benefits of Saxon Alg 1 4th edition over 3rd edition?
A shopper on Sep 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We did not like the 4th edition at all. It's not written by Saxon and you can really tell. We felt like they expected you to know concepts without adequate prior explanation so I often felt as if we'd missed something, even though we'd done all the previous lessons. It felt disorganized and much more theoretical than the 3rd edition. I've taught classes of homeschool students for 6 years so I'm very familiar with both editions, and in my opinion, the 3rd if excellent and I recommend it highly. Avoid the 4th edition.
Do you have 4th edition?
Not a student edition.
I mean not 2009
It's 2011

BEST ANSWER: I'm a bit confused by your questions. This kit includes the 4th edition Algebra 1 student text, solutions manual, and test book. The kit has a 2011 publication date.
