Straightforward, comprehensive, and FUN!
This product revolutionized my homeschool in the absolute best way! I love Saxon and so does my student! It is SO EASY for the parent to use and it is comprehensive. Gone are my worries that we might “miss something” or “fall behind.” There are no tricks or gimmicks with this product; it is very straightforward. It has been great to see my student’s progress and enthusiasm (we both live math time now!) since we have been using this product. I recommend it to everyone I know!

Saxon Makes Math Easy
We are several weeks into Saxon Math 1. As you know it’s a spiral program with one new concept per lesson and constant review. Sometimes my son gets annoyed with the review, but it is helpful to create habits and retain skills. If you buy this set, you really do need the Saxon K-3 math manipulatives because they are used in almost every lesson. This hands on approach helps my son stay engaged for new skills and he has fun “acting out” his math. Are you a homeschooling parent with Math-a-phobia? No worries with this curriculum. The teacher manual/parent book is scripted, making my job easy. A few areas for improvement- there are occasionally some instructions that could be better/more clearly written, and offer some guidance in the teacher edition on how to accelerate lessons for quick students. We decided to supplement with IXL and do 2 lessons on some days.

Awesomely Easy to Teach Curriculum
My first grader went from crying about math (in public school) to now being excited about Saxon Math (in our Homeschool). It's written in plain normal English, so it's easy for a non-mathematician to teach. Not once have I gone, "huh?" Saxon teaches the concepts behind math, not just memorization and steps. My son is so proud of himself now that he "gets it". Be aware that the teacher (mom or dad) does have to look ahead to gather supplies and occasionally set up extras for the lessons (like cutting shapes, writing on 3x5 cards, buying apples). Everyday is different, so it doesn't get boring. I highly suggest doing the Meeting Book, because those are repetitive daily activities necessary for daily life (like a calendar, clock, and left/right). When I was first deciding on what to buy I was eager to save money, but it was suggested to buy the entire kit along with the manipulatives (sold separately). Yes, the entire kit is necessary! I really believe if I wasn't teaching the entire math program the way it's meant to be used, my son would suffer for it. I've seen some negative comments about this program being too repetitive, but proficiency in math requires repetition. Practice really does make perfect and builds confidence. Saxon Math doesn't teach math any old way, but it understands brain development in children and HOW they learn. At first this kit appears to be expensive ...But... it's well worth the price. The cost is put into the curriculum itself, instead of wasting it on fancy paper, hardbacks, or pretty colorful pictures. We also have Saxon Algebra 1/2 and Saxon Grammar 6, and they are equally impressive.

Hey to to whoever will read this.. we are on week number 13 with 1st grade math and my kindergartner loves it! This program
Slowly progresses and is hands on with a daily front and back work sheet. I would highly recommend it and will probably purchase 2nd grade Saxon math for next year.

Good program, a little overkill
We are a Saxon household. I like all the levels. However, don't bother purchasing the instructor's book, or all the manipulatives. Waste of $ and time. Maybe just the Judy Clock. The wooden blocks are also fun to have around for play time. If you were to follow the instructor guide all the time, it would take FOREVER. Just come up with your own manipulatives at home.

I chose Saxon Math because many years ago when I was teaching my children at home I liked it. Now when I am helping my children to home school my grandchildren, it is the course I recommend.

Because it's how I learned math as a child and I loved it.
Sara D on Feb 20, 2018
Highly recommended my my mom, who home-schooled us, and also was a public school teacher and reading specialist. She used it both in home-schooling, and in the public school format - she found it to be excellent for both.
User on Feb 14, 2018
I spent days researching before deciding on Saxon, because it's normal math -not this new Common Core strangeness that'll make your kids cry (the main reason we're Homeschooling now). I love the idea of using colorful fun manipulatives for my 6 year old, too. My husband likes this, because Mr. Saxon was a military vet, and hubby was too. He says it's manly math good for his boys.
Michael S on Feb 9, 2018

What edition is this?
A shopper on Jun 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Home Study Teacher's Edition
Have the Saxon math homeschool editions been aligned to common core?
A shopper on Mar 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The K-3 Saxon Math Homeschool Editions have copyrights in the early 90s which was long before Common Core. They have not been updated to align. There are some editions (most notably the Math Intermediate Series and the Courses 1, 2, & 3) that are topically aligned to CCSS. Even these later, CCSS aligned editions do not depart from the solid Saxon methodology and the excellent math instruction.
What manipulative kit goes with Saxon 1 through Saxon 3? I would like to not have to purchase an additional kit later on. Thanks!
User on Jan 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have used Saxon K through Saxon 2. Manipulatives are used more heavily in Saxon K, understandably, than the other grades. However, those we continue to use in Saxon 1 are linking cubes (set of 100-in 10 colors), pattern blocks (we have the Melissa and Doug Pattern Block Kit with the magnetic wipe board), a simple analog clock that the child can easily set, and a geoboard with rubber bands (we have a double-sided board with a square pattern on one side and an equilateral triangle pattern on the other side).
Where are the Master pages for Math 1? I only see Master pages located in the Student Workbook starting at 1-19A but it has already started requesting them to be used in the second lesson (Master 1-2)?? I'm so confused as to where the Masters pages might be. Please help!! Thank you :)
A shopper on Sep 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: they are throughout the kids workbook, in the teachers manual it informs you on that lesson and you will find it for that lesson.
Does Saxon Math 1 match up to first grade?
Holli B on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It will depend on the standards/curriculum you are comparing it to. Saxon in the primary grades is slower paced than many programs found currently in the public schools or that we carry.
Does this have a 2002 re-printing date inside the front cover? Looking to match my TE with the workbooks.
A shopper on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The TEs in our Homeschool Kits have a 1994 copyright date. A re-printing date is inconsequential because there will have been no major changes with just a re-printing.
Is this the third edition?
A shopper on Jun 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, we carry the 1st edition of Saxon Math grades K-3.
what is the meeting book?
A shopper on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The meeting book is like your child's own personal calendar, only they learn how to fill in the date every day. At the beginning of each lesson in the teachers manual there is a section called "The Meeting" that teaches calendar, weather graph, and counting, and as you teach this section, your student follows along and uses the meeting book. Sometimes, if we've missed a few days, I still make my boys fill in the missing dates and we talk about those dates and what we might've done on those days, so they can see the progression of time.
Does this include everything I will need to teach first grade math? What will I need to purchase extra when I teach it again to my next child?
A shopper on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, in order to do all of the activities and lessons in the Saxon books, you will also need the manipulative kit. The kit has all the 1-inch square blocks, scale, tangrams, geoboard, etc... that you will use in Saxon 1. You need that in addition to the teacher's book and student workbooks. You will either need to photocopy the student workbooks so you can reuse it with your next child or purchase another set of workbooks when you need them for your next student. (Personally I bought the manipulative kit that works for Saxon K-3, so I got all the items needed for all the math books through Saxon 3.)
i do not need meeting book can i buy it without the meeting book?
A shopper on Feb 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The kit is only available with the meeting book but you can purchase the teacher edition and the workbooks by themselves.
