Happy so far
The program is very systematic, has plenty of practice problems, reviews previously learned material to keep the knowledge fresh and is easy to implement for the teacher. We are happy with it so far.

Great but...
We didn't need the solutions manual, which explains in great detail WHY an answer is wrong and/or HOW to get that answer step by step. I guess if the parent doesn't have a basic understanding of mathematics, or if the student is self-correcting, that might be important. But it was an additional expense and not necessary.

I LOVE Saxxon Math! I have been homeschooling my children for 6 years now and math has been grueling and inconsistent. Now, it's a breeze! No more stress because the work is broken down and explained and each concept they learn is continued throughout each lesson. So they never forget what they are learning as they go. I am very pleased and will be returning each year to Rainbow Resource for our school curricula.

Saxon Algebra 1/2
I bought Saxon because it is not Common Core. My 6th grade son did two years' of Singapore Math last year, and the way Saxon constantly reviews previously covered key topics is good for him and enables him to cement the concepts more into his brain, even though he does not like the repetition. The text is clearly written and topics clearly explained, but my son does find it somewhat boring. Although it is recommended that students do ALL the problems, I generally have my son do 2/3 - 3/4 of them. Otherwise, he becomes easily bored and loses focus. In this sense, maybe an on-line program would have worked better for us - one that determines whether he has fully mastered a concept and thus doesn't repeat so much. It would save me a lot of time each week, that's for sure. But my son already does some of his subjects such as vocab and Spanish on-line, as well as a live writing class, so he didn't want to spend so much time in front of the screen.
There is a test for every four lessons in the textbook.
If your student takes the placement test and doesn't miss a lot of Algebra 1/2 topics, you can start by giving them the tests in the Test Forms booklet to see how far along in the textbook you can start.

Common Core has destroyed the teaching and learning of math for students. Our current public school skips over simple concepts of beginning algebra and then wonders why even the straight A students are struggling in Algebra 1. I bought the Saxxon Algebra 1/2 and Algebra 1 textbooks to help my 2 sons actually learn how to do Algebra for future success. Common Core should have actually consulted with Saxxon to provide an instruction program that works. The extra time/money is worth it.

My daughter has plans for medical school. This is a good curriculum to prepare for what lies ahead in college. Rainbow Resource is the only place that has a kit for sale that includes the solutions manual. An excellent bargain and just what I needed!

We have done Saxon since the beginning of homeschooling , 2yrs going on 3. Each lesson builds on the previous lessons. That enables the student to learn concepts instead of memorizing and forgetting them.

I used a previous edition of this textbook when I was in junior high. I really benefited from using it. It made math doable for me. I knew it would help my own students as well.

After much reading & research, we went with Susan Wise Bauer's recommendation to skip Saxon 8/7, in favor of Algebra 1/2, 3rd Edition.

Saxon Math provides useful review without frustrating amounts of busy work that some other programs require. The solutions manual allows me to always have the answers and be ready to help my child work through all the necessary steps.

Straightforward, thorough, and fundamental Algebra. With 10 years of trial and error under my belt, I start with Singapore and end with Saxon.

The spiraling of Saxon has really helped my daughter. Slow and methodical. That's what she needs right now. I will also be purchasing the Art Reed DVDs. My daughter really likes listening to and learning from Mr. Reed.

I bought the homeschool kit for Saxon 1/2. Is there book that gives the solutions for the Practice sets? Our solution guide only has the answers for the problem sets.
A shopper on Oct 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: In the back of the booklet labeled Homeschool Packet, there is a section (booklet says Textbook Answers in upper right corner of the page) that includes the practice problem answers before each lesson's problem set answers. In my book, it is page 47. In the back of the text (p. 463) answers to odd-numbered problems from both the practice and problem sets. I'm not sure why it only includes odd-numbered problems.
Are these books consumable?
A shopper on Oct 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, we have found that there is not enough space in the text to show any work, and have therefore done all the work in a separate workbook. The test booklet has room to do some work, but not all, so we have elected to keep things consistent, and do all the calculations the same workbook as the text questions. Hope that helps.
