Complete program
I do love the Saxon method of review and the vocabulary in each lesson is great. The writing portion could be better, but it covers the basics.

We love Saxon Grammar and Writing
Saxon Grammar and Writing has been amazing for our family! My daughter, who is an advanced reader but a struggling writer, is thriving with the bite sized chunks of grammar and smaller writing assignments. It has changed her into a successful writer with the skills to write anything!

Works for me!
As a lover of Saxon math for decades, I decided to try this grammar program. It was easy to use, circular, and covers the important scope and sequence areas!

This works!
My son has struggled with retaining grammar concepts. Using Saxon's has boosted his confidence and given him a much better understanding of the English language. He actually enjoys Language Arts!

Exactly what we needed.
The format of this curriculum is very much like the Saxon math. This has worked very well for both my math-gifted daughter and my math challenged daughter. The grammar and writing has served the same purpose for my youngest. However, I have tweaked the program by not trying to do a lesson every day. We do one lesson every week and use all the exercises. The reinforcement is very important to her really understanding and remembering the rules. I wish I had seen this earlier.

Spiral method of Grammer
This book takes it one step at a time to teach Grammer and there is a separate workbook to teach writing. There is a lesson plan in the book that tells you when to teach what. Writing isn't everyday. You dos many Grammer lessons and a writing lesson. Spelling is in the form of dictation that they practice during the week.

Great and easy to work with!!!
I love the way these teach and then review what they are learning. On the plus side they loop in what they have learned from all the other previous lessons!!! Love this set!!!!

Because they didn't have 3rd grade in this version. We have not yet completed it & had to try a different method to pick up what she hadn't learned.

Saxon has always proven success. I saw samples of this and good reviews on the Internet. It uses spiral approach and teaches writing also. I think the review of material throughout the year would benefit my child. It was one of Carhy Duffy's top 102 homeschool picks.

We love the Saxon Math system and were very unhappy with a different "Brand" of language arts textbooks. We're hoping that the Saxon L.A. system is just as wonderful as the math!

What level should we start on? My daughter is in 7th grade but has a hard time with Grammar. We love Saxon so I know this will work for us. Would 5th grade be best so she can catch up?
A shopper on Aug 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I am running my 9th, 7th, 5th and 3rd grade kids through the Grammar 4 at the same time. I expect my older two will be able to do 2 or more lessons a day, since their writing skills are better. That means they will hit the 5 book sooner than the youngers, and then the 6, etc. Anytime I am catching them up on something, I usually set a minimum number of lessons per day based on age and skills, and they can do more if they want. With the grammar, I want them to come out as card-carrying Grammar Police hahaha! So, even though they could have started at 5, I did 4 for the extra practice.
What ages is this best for?

BEST ANSWER: We have used saxon MATH for years. But this is the first year we used saxon grammar. I really liked the review as well as the inclusion of composition. We used the 4th grade books with our son. He turned 7 half way through the year, but is doing mostly 3rd grade work. However i wanted to try saxon grammar and this was the youngest set saxon had, so we got it. He is a good reader and did well. Some of the lessons, he read completely on his own and understood fully, but some he did not understand without my help. He did struggle some on the tests, getting frequently in the 70% range. I plan to use this book again with him next year as that will really be his 4th grade year anyway and i want him to have a chance to get the information better. If your child does well in school, this could be used for 3rd or 4th grade. It is challenging, but very well written and organized. If i could change anything, i wish it included more literature and i wish it had the easy grammar approach of having the student first find the prepositional phrase. But, if they use Easy Grammar at younger ages and then switch in 4th grade to saxon, i think that would be good.
If I have twins, which portion will I need to purchase in multiple?
A shopper on Apr 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Both the textbook and the student workbook would be needed for each student unless you planned to photo copy each lesson. In the textbook for each lesson there is a dictation/journal entry that is usually two vocabulary words, and this is followed by the lesson (for example Lesson 48 is over Coordinating Conjunctions so it defines those, gives examples, has practice problems where the student fills in the blank, and then has a review set which could ask questions regarding this lesson, and also go all the way back to the beginning lessons, reinforcing skills along the way. It doesn't specially say "textbook" on the larger book, but it's listed on this website as textbook.
Does this include reading instruction?
A shopper on Oct 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, there is no direct reading instruction. It does include 2 vocabulary words for each lesson (usually homonyms or easily confused or somehow related words). I would not recommend using this with students who are still learning to read. It is pretty heavy grammar practice that might really frustrate kids still learning to read. The practice questions are meant to be read by the student for the most part and there is a prepared dictation component as well as tests and writing assignments.
