Great gift
We bought one of these tadpoles when our children were growing up and the frog lived for over ten years. It was an amazing east to care for pet.

So we bought one for our grandson’s 7th birthday. He loves it. The tadpole arrived shortly after the coupon was mailed and our grandson has been enjoying watching it sprout legs. Wonderful opportunity for learning. Would buy another.

I did not think this one through...
I thought this would be a fun biology lesson. You get the plastic box (no dome) and order your tadpole. It comes quick. At first it is fun. Then you need stage 2 food, and a dome...well once you realize you have to order it and pay shipping you might as well buy an upgrade tank. They send that with a 2nd free froglet. Now you have 2. They grow fast...they are dirty and need either spring water or special water crystals. You then learn they are African Clawed Aquatic frogs not native. They live a loooonnnngggg time and get big. Now we have 2 frogs that we do not want and have no way to get rid of them so we continue along. They do make great frog-o-vision for our cat.

Get butterflies instead. You will thank me I swear.

We love our Grow a Frog Currently we are on our 2nd one; first one died after about 4 weeks but Grow a Frog has a great guarantee so we got a 2nd tadpole for free It is very easy to set up & take care of while being very educational and just down-right neat! Currently our 2nd tadpole has back legs & front leg buds

I ordered this kit for my kids (7 & 4) to learn about the life cycles of frogs We sent away for our tadpole and waited and waited for it to come Since we live in S FL we had to wait for a cool day to come before they would ship our tadpole After weeks of waiting it arrived We followed all the instructions and all was well But after 2 weeks our tadpole started to look sick It died a few days later I emailed customer service and they said another tadpole would be sent right away After several weeks went by and many cool days I began to wonder where our tadpole was I emailed them again and they apologized They said they would send another The day I was suppose to get it passed They apologized again and said one was on the way Well we did get our tadpole Unfortunately it was floating belly up and died that night I emailed again asking if this was normal They did not answer my questions about the survival rate of the tadpoles Instead they said they would upgrade my tadpole tank and send me 2 tadpoles free of charge! They should of been here 3 days ago (the weather is cool as well) but again they did not arrive So to sum it up it has been about four months and we have no tadpoles The only thing my kids learned about was death

Where do I begin? First of all the customer service at Grow-A-Frog is fabulous The most important service they offer is a way for you to send the frog (or frogs) back when you've had your fill of African Clawed Frogs You really shouldn't dump them in your local waterwayBut now to the important stuff These frogs can and do live over twenty years They get very large--if you're going to keep it go ahead and get yourself at least a ten gallon tank that you need only clean once a month rather than changing out the water in Grow-A-Frogs' 1 or 5 gallon tank You are buying a living creature and living creatures take time and money Not so much time for me now that I have a tank that only needs to be cleaned once a month or so but I've been surprised at the hidden costs--two tanks(and the one I currently have isn't really big enough but I cannot afford a larger one right now) gravel filter cartridges water purifier food heater The good thing is they really are low maintenance (once you have a real tank with pump and filter) They would prefer heated water but can survive without it (I bought my heater for the fish we put in with them) They can co-exist with fish but fish are more delicate so you'll have to clean the water and gravel a little more often All in all the learning experience has been good but it's been more economic than scientific in nature

My son got one of these for his third birthday It lived until my son was ten We got a smaller frog two years later so Fred the frog would have a friend A warning to anyone who might do the same thing It became a new learning opportunity about the food chain when he ate his friend He also ate goldfish It grew quite large and would come to the surface of his 10 gallon tank and nibble on fingers

I chose this kit and company because of good reviews. My son is doing this for a merit badge and if the frog lives we have someone will care for it when he is finished.

Does the tadpole come separately?
A shopper on Dec 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. A voucher is included in the package that you can electronically submit or snail-mail in. I can't remember if there was a small fee for shipping.
Can you just buy the tadpoles and food, already have the aquarium?
bobbevb on Aug 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't believe so, but that is great if you have the aquarium because the one it comes with is a tiny square plastic one, it would be wonderful to have a bigger one!
Can I release this frog to our outdoor pond once it grows?
A shopper on Apr 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From the research we did, it is not advisable. More from a not-introducing-invasive-species point of view than safety of the frog, which would probably do just fine. We found out, (after ordering) that they are illegal to own, without a permit, in the following states: Arizona, California, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia, Hawaii, Nevada, and Washington state.
What species of frog are these tadpoles?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It actually doesn't say anywhere in the kit, or on the company's website that we could find, but I did some research (because we had wanted to know too), and it seems they are African Clawed Frogs.
How long does it take for you to get your tapole after placing an order?
A shopper on Apr 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: WE recieved our tadpole about a week after I sent in the certificate.
