Ruth Interlinear Translation Workbook
This text provides a workable framework for engaging with and learning Hebrew. The text begins with a chart of the Hebrew letters (pronunciation, script, block, and letter). English letter pronunciation is used to interpret the Hebrew: /ts/ as in hats; /z/ as in zoo. A second chart elaborates the vowel points, with a romanized pronunciation of each sound. Then, Scripture begins. This interlinear text includes the complete Biblical text of Ruth, following the Hebrew--right to left. Structured word by word in a 3-tiered framework for easy reading, the Hebrew is placed at the top, with space for copywork, for notes in the middle, and a word-by-word English translation at the bottom. Endnotes will highlight unique structures and grammar, such as the feminine plural; imperfect tenses; and one of the several chiastic structures found in Ruth (found in Chapter One).
While this study can be used with any Biblical Hebrew course and the book of Ruth can be studied at any time, the publisher Alef Press recommends this Ruth study after completing the publishers Biblical Hebrew 2. Particularly, the student should be familiar with the following verb stems used in the end notes: Qal, Nifal, Piel, Pual, Hifil, Hofal, and Hitpael. A good grasp of these verb stems will also equip the student for further reading from Scripture. Scripture quotations come from ESV, NIV, NETS, God’s Word, and the Complete Jewish Bible English Translation. Nonreproducible, 72 pgs, pb. ~ Ruth
Like the Jonah Copybook and Malachi Interlinear Hebrew Translation Workbook, Ruth is for beginning and more advanced students to use in different ways. Once the beginner can read and write, these workbooks develop fluency and provide a foothold in grammar, syntax, idiom, and translation, working straight from books of the Bible. They are also for use by students who are ready to begin reading and translating longer passages of Scripture without frustration over a stack of references.
Ruth: An Interlinear Hebrew Translation Workbook includes the entire Hebrew text of Ruth, word for word glosses, pronunciation and handwriting reference charts, directions and space for copywork and translation exercises, and grammar and translation notes. Unique to Ruth is an emphasis in the endnotes on verb stems. Biblical Hebrew 2 (sold separately) ends with an introduction to the verb stems beyond qal. This workbook will help students recognize and understand less common verb forms, and so is recommended for use after completing Biblical Hebrew 2, as a bridge to further, independent reading and translating from Scripture. Suitable as a supplement to any Biblical Hebrew course. Beautiful cover art by Camille Pissarro
Here is a high school level, Christian course for lifelong learning from God's word designed for families and schools. Students learn to read scripture in Hebrew. The course will take 2 years when using the primer as year 1, the equivalent of 2 high school foreign language credits. In Year 1, your student will use the primer as a text and the annotations as the teacher guide, which includes an audio CD of 11 traditional Hebrew songs. Show & Tell is a DVD supplement to the primer and has stories from history and tradition with photos of places, wildlife in Israel, Biblical sites, art and artifacts, pronunciation of each lesson and an audiovisual flashcard review. A copywork book is also used at level 1 and works on translation as well as writing. Year 2 has a text, workbook, and workbook answer key. You will use the songs from level 1 in level 2. While I cannot read any Hebrew, I can tell there is grammar and vocabulary in both levels as you would find in any foreign language, working towards fluency. I like the audio component for pronunciation since it opens up the language to those who may not already know some Hebrew. The primer begins with the alphabet and shows how the characters evolved from Egyptian symbols in some cases. Letter names are spelled out in a way that makes them easy to pronounce and writing practice is part of every lesson. This is really interesting and would add something more to studying scripture. ~ Sara
