Great for Advanced Readers too!
My son is an advanced reader, who picked up reading very quickly. Notwithstanding his ability in reading, I’ve sought to continue to teach him phonics to ensure there were/are no gaps. He learned to read using The Reading Lesson. He loved this book and truly learned to read quickly (highly recommend!). That said, there remained some phonics gaps which I endeavored to fill by working through AlphaPhonics and Reading Pathways. Both had their strengths (especially Reading Pathways), but all lacked the thorough instruction I was after. My son asks a lot of questions and I didn’t have the answers. All About Reading has the answers, y’all!

If your child is an advanced reader and you’re wondering whether it’s worth the investment of effort and money to supplement with this program, this review is for you!

We started All About Reading at Level 2 because although he was reading at a more advanced level, I wanted to capture all of the advanced phonics concepts. We were able to accelerate through Level 2 very easily (usually collapsing two lessons into one without compromising retention or comprehension). Level 3 is not as easy to accelerate because the stories are longer and it is recommended that you read them at least twice. You can collapse two lessons, but you’ll need to allocate more time than you may wish to spend.

The Cons
- I think many of the activities are silly and I don’t love all the cutting. But, you know what? my son, who just turned five thinks they are fabulous and fun, so what do I know?
- The stories in the first reader of Level 3 were boring and a bit tedious for both of us. The second reader was more engaging.
- The pictures in the readers are distracting for my son and am not sure why. This isn’t a problem for him with other books.
- Suited for a parent who has the time for hands-on instruction.

The Pros
- Thorough.
- Suited for a child who wants to know the whys.
- Suited for a parent who has the time for hands-on instruction.
- As you learn all the whys you are better able to support your reader with his outside reading and spelling.
- Stories reinforce lessons and feature character building themes.
- Pairs well with All About Spelling. I don’t find it repetitive as much as another opportunity for reinforcement (particularly since my son is so young).

Worth every penny. I don’t think I would have taught him to read using All About Reading because I think he would have found the pace frustratingly slow. But, this program has been of huge benefit in furthering his fluency and supporting his reading as he flies forward! We are working through AAR 4 now.

Excellent curriculum for beginning and struggling readers!
AAR is an excellent reading curriculum that has helped my 9 year old who struggled to read, to become a more confident reader. I would recommend this curriculum to anyone who is learning to read and also to older children who struggle with reading. The curriculum is extremely easy to use and walks you through each lesson step by step. I wish I had known about this curriculum sooner!

A God-send!
Our son is reading so much better using this program! He is 9 and has dyslexia. Two previous phonics-based programs did not give him all the tools his mind needed to decode. All About Reading is unusual, as it is an Orton Gillingham program that is so easy and enjoyable to use! “I don’t even know I am learning!” Highly recommended by both son and mom!

I love it and he is excited about reading! Win-Win!!
I have been using All About Reading for just a month now and we really love it! I love that it ties in so well with Spell to Write and Read, that we have been doing for over a year, now! I love how it pulls that in and adds to it. I really like the teacher's lesson plans and how easy they are to follow! But the best is that my dyslexic son said just today, "Mom, this is really fun! I like doing this reading stuff!" Praise the Lord! Thank you, All About Reading and Rainbow Resource!

Reading made fun
My reluctant reader started AAR Level 1 last year at age 8. With some dyslexia symptoms, reading was a chore and exhausting (for mom and student!). But the tiles and student activities made it so he didn't realize he was reading! Now at age 9, he's into Level 3 and reading: no choppiness, no frustration, no tears. Even picking up books on his own to read.

my daughter did levels one and two, and is so excited to be starting level three! this program has helped turn her into a bookworm. some of the stories in the readers are rather silly, and some she doesn't quite understand because we don't have TV and have never been to the circus. but overall i'd recommend this reading program to anyone struggling with a dislexic child or student

Worked for my delayed son!
My son has struggled for years to make the connections needed to read. We found Level 1 when he was 8 years old. It was just the thing to make things click! All About Reading is set up to use most senses- hearing, seeing, touching. Level 3 continues with the same format and the continuation of reading rules. I can’t recommended it enough!

I love this program! We started with level 2 with my struggling reader after trying MANY other things, this program is worth every penny! It really fills in the gaps. One suggestion that we have found at my daughters suggestion is to cut up the reading pages, they can get long, and hide them. It turns it into a fun game of hide and seek and she gets a break between the readings as she searchers for the next one.

We have found that the AAR program works well for our Dyslexic daughter in that it supports her need for multi-modal learning and need for information presented in small chunks as well as revisiting it in future lessons.

My child does not like to read, AT ALL. She read an excerpt from Cedric the Knight and fell in love - we ordered it immediately. Anything to make learning to read more enjoyable for her is worth it.

AAR 2 has been wonderful for our son so we are moving on to Level 3. We have tried numerous reading programs and this is working! Love this program!
Doris L V on Jan 15, 2019
In love with the AAR program. It will catapult your child into reading. At the end of level 2 my child is already reading chapter books out loud and on his own. It is such a simple straight forward program. We didn't rush through it. Some lessons we took a few days to accomplish if it was a little difficult. All you literally have to do is show up. The program does all the hard work for you. You will love it. I've recommended it to my family and all are using it now.

My boys are struggling readers, and are technically going into 6th grade. Would it be worth it to start them in AAR level 3 or 4?
A shopper on Jul 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: On their website they have placement test I would recommend you do that first. I have used all 4 levels with my kids who were struggling readers. Currently finishing up with their AAS curriculum. Hope this helps😊
Hi My daugher is starting all about spelling level 3. Can this be used in conjunction with that program. Do both levels teach the same things at the same levels?
A shopper on Feb 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes! The spelling lessons do coordinate with the reading lessons. In fact, the spelling book will actually tell you if you have finished a certain lesson, which readers you are ready to read from the reading program. I love both of these curriculum! Honestly my daughter is doing level 3 spelling this year and her spelling has improved by 300%. I love the way the lessons are laid out.
is this the 3rd edition?
User on Mar 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. This is level 3. You may wish to start with this level if your child has already completed levels 1 and 2. Or you may wish to start here with an older child who has some basic reading and needs the extra reinforcement and to work on fluency.
