Easy base for composition
My son is 10 years old high functioning autism and was really struggling with Writing Strands 3 he didn't understand why he need to put so much detail and back story. So we got Writing Strands 2 and started at the basics we are moving quickly through it but he seems to have a better understanding as to the "why" now.

fun, genre-centered approach
This program divides assignments by genres of writing, and the assignments allow the child to use their creativity and have fun. After each week, it says to read and discuss ideas for a week. So we've been doing half a week every week as we read and discuss constantly. I got this because it was recommended in the Well-Trained Mind and I've been very happy with it. You'll find it to be very different than another recommended approach, Writing with Ease. While the latter only works the skills of copywork, narration, and dictation, Writing Strands introduces writing in different genres, like writing dialogue, advertisements, fiction, etc. I think both approaches are worthwhile and we're incorporating both.

Perfect for teaching writing
This curriculum is so easy to use and implement. It is open and go, gives lessons in easy increments, and has just enough flexibility so that you and/or your child can be as creative as you would like (or not) within each lesson. This will help you teach your child to learn how to structure and organize ideas into complete, creative sentences which help them progress into paragraph and full stories/papers. No frills, but straight to the point, bare bones in teaching basic writing (composition) skills.

At first dubious about this program after finishing the first book I began to see the brilliant way this series is organized to teach kids incremental skills in writing Never having been taught how to write creatively in my public school experience I learned as much as the kids I have reluctant writers and though they sometimes balked at doing any writing this program leaves kids the freedom to write about what really interests them within parameters designed to teach new skills Also the daily assignments are short usually 15-20 minutes spent reading the assignment and then writing which makes it more manageable for unenthusiastic kids I love that the program is non-consumable and therefore affordable I highly recommend the instructor book "Evaluating Writing"

First time user. I'm trying this out for a gentle introduction to composition.

My husband has a PhD in English, and he likes the genre-based approach to teaching writing. I read about Writing Strands in The Well-Trained Mind and decided to try this program.

This book teaches that basics of writing. It starts with basic sentences and teaches how to add description and eventually writing paragraphs. I have used this with older kids.

Recommended by Susan Wise Bauer (author of The Well-Trained Mind) and the exercises sounded fun for my second-grader.

Book 3 was too difficult for the 11 year old that we have custody of.

Will this original edition continue to be in print? Or should I start with newer edition? I just don’t want future books to be unavailable if this program is a keeper.

BEST ANSWER: The publisher has indicated that they will not be reprinting this older, original series so it will gradually "go away" as our inventory is depleted.
My daughter is entering 3rd grade and can independently write a sentence. (She can chat forever on any given topic, but when asked to write her thoughts down, she will condense all she has to say into one basic 5-7-word sentence using the shortest, simplest words possible.) Which level of Writing Strands would you recommend? I am leaning towards Level 2.

BEST ANSWER: You can go either way. We have the same thing here. WS 3 starts with that basic short sentence and spends the first 2 lessons working on ways to make that expand that sentence and make it more interesting, and later lessons refer back to those first lessons on "go back and make your writing more complex". It's meant to be done as an independent writing program, but I sit alongside my 3rd grader because he's not ready for that level of independence.
