We purchased the entire curriculum package to help my son bring up his SAT scores We also purchased the entire Geometry course and worked them sidebyside My son scored 1175 on the SAT earlier in the year and needed a 1200 to gain a scholarship After talking to some parents who had gone through the same thing they had told me that the most they were able to gain in the second (and even third) testing was 10 additional points and could not break the 1200 barrier We plowed ahead with the Keyto's in spite of this hoping for the best!I can attest that you get a lot of bang for your buck! These aren't flashy textbooks or workbooks but the content is easy to understand and sequential Each booklet covers a different topic/skill to master You get plenty of practice without it being overwhelming The answer key helps explain the concepts thoroughly and what pitfalls to watch for Even I had many "Aha! Now I understand why!" moments while going through these with my son I had Algebra in high school and I really didn't understand what I was doing or why but the Keyto's helped take away my fear of being able to teach Algebra After completing all the workbooks my son improved his SAT score by a whopping 90 points and he gained an academic scholarship! I can't thank Keyto enough for this helpful course! My mathphobic daughter is now using these and she enjoys them (that's a BIG accomplishment in itself to say that she "enjoys" anything having to do with math)! These workbooks may be considered "too easy" for your typical math genius but for my artistic rightbrained mathphobic daughter these were perfect She gets overwhelmed with too many explanations too much logical detail etc that her brain shuts down as her frustration levels go up! The Keyto's were perfect for her She could read them and easily understand the concepts and she gained confidence as she completed each assignment The concept would be introduced and examples laid out of how to do the problem and a page or two of largetype problems to work This was enough for her She wants to take the problem apply the method to solving the problem and be done with it This may sound like a pitfall but realistically she will never be an engineer astronaut or architect (hopefully she'll marry one! ;) But these are plenty adequate for a complete Algebra course!I like how the concepts are broken down into little booklets that are easy to carry around The 10 booklets are less than a quarterinch thick and printed on newsprinttype paper (nothing glossy) It's so easy to grab the booklets and go to piano lessons I can sit and check their work while they play or they can work in them while a sibling is engaged in their piano lesson It's so nice not having to carry a bulky textbook around Whenever anyone asks me "What math curriculum do you use?" I say "KEY TO all the way!"

Excellent Review Books
For students who are struggling with algebra or students who need to review before they go on to more advanced math classes, these workbooks are wonderful. They have great examples followed by enough problems for the student to gain the practice they need. The set isn't as comprehensive as a traditional algebra course but I do recommend it for review. I use them for tutoring. Note that the answers are not in the workbooksthey are in the Answers & Notes books (one for books 14, one for books 57, and another for books 810). There is also a set of books that have pretests and post tests and answer keys for those.

Superb introduction to algebra
I am not, NOT a math brain teaching a nonmathbrained kid, so discovering a logical, sequential explanation that makes few presuppositions is refreshing, to say the least. One huge benefit is that the math calculations aspect, at least in the beginning books, is minimized to allow students to work with algebraic concepts but not struggle with the number crunching. We are a nocalculatorsallowed family, so this is a big plus. Generally it is pretty easy. I will follow this series up with a standard Algebra 1 text. For some the easy nature of the examples and practice problems may be offputting. For us it's a perfect fit.

Good program for those who need practice
I would definitely recommend Key to for anyone who needs a simple straightforward introduction to a math subject with a good selection of similar problems on one page. So far it is working well for my son who struggles with remembering how to do math computation. I like how it is one topic per page.

My son struggles with Math. It is subject he struggles with most and requires extra time, as well as simpler instructions and more repetition. This book came highly recommended to me as I have tried three other curricula. Although the curricula were great it was still too fast paced for him. The Key to Algebra is slower paced with more focus on each concept and gradual increase to the concept being taught. He is currently almost finished with book 4 is doing extremely well.

Would you consider the Key to Algebra books a full Algebra course for nonmath students?
Nathan T
on Feb 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would say that it gets the student 85 to 90% of the way there because it clearly and simply teaches the language of Algebra. If a student is going on to Algebra 2 it would be wise to supplement it with something a little more hard core ( not common core) that will challenge him or her after learning the basics. I consider Key to Algebra series an excellent confidence builder.

I'm not a certified teacher but my degree is in Computer Science, and I had to take a lot of advanced math. I use the Keys to Algebra workbooks to strengthen my nonmath daughter's skills. I would not consider these a full Algebra course because each page focuses on a particular skill with no tiein from one skill to the other. They don't include much in the way of explanations, but mostly examples. I think the Algebra student needs to be shown and practice "story problem" which include using more than one Algebra technique or skill. My first choice for any student to learn Algebra would be to use a tutor/teacher so that dialogue can occur and questions can be answered. My second choice would be a program like Teaching Textbooks. Most college majors require at least passing College Algebra, which might be difficult if a fullfledged Algebra course hasn't been taken. Blessings!

I'm not sure what is meant by nonmath student. If the student is ready for algebra concepts this is a good one to choose. Having the answers actually worked out in the answer key, not just a list of answers is really helpful. It helps see where the mistake was made or if the problem was set up right in the first place. Having a small workbook at a time is not so overwhelming as a large textbook for the year. It gives a visual closure to having mastered different concepts. Having a number of completions can be better than only one when a typical textbook is finished. I noticed toward the end of the series when most of the concepts were learned one could skip a book and be successful with the next. My student got bogged down in book 8 so we moved on to book 9. Math cycles around and perhaps the readiness level will be there next time.

Key to Algebra covers all the essential topics of a first year of high school algebra. It is designed to be used by an intelligent and motivated student with no real background in algebra or prealgebra. I think it is well written. However, it is always difficult for people who are naturally good at math to assess what will work for people who are not.

If a student is going on to Algebra 2 it would be wise to supplement it with something a little more hard core ( not common core) that will challenge him or her after learning the basics. I consider Key to Algebra series an excellent confidence builder. Reply

Blessings! Reply

Reply

Key to Algebra covers all the essential topics of a first year of high school algebra. It is designed to be used by an intelligent and motivated student with no real background in algebra or prealgebra. I think it is well written. However, it is always difficult for people who are naturally good at math to assess what will work for people who are not. Reply

Yes, I would consider this a full Algebra course for nonmath students. I chose to purchase this after reading a review from the prominent reviewer, Cathy Duffy. I would encourage you to consult her book or website for further information. Reply
